I'm trying to convince my DH that camping at Disney is a fabulous idea! I'm getting a little help from the bedbug stories on the news. He does not want to stay in any sort of hotel at this point so I may get my way!

I have a few questions for all of you FW experts...forgive me if you answered them a million and one times before. :flower3: I'm new to camping in general, not just at Disney.

What's the difference between preferred and full hook up? Is cable available at full hookup sites?

We're looking to stay Nov of 2011, should I book now? Do the campsites fill up faster than the resorts?

Can you take advantage of any discounts like AAA?

Can you use your vehicle to get around the campgrounds or do you have to rent one of those overpriced golf carts?

Is there a counter service food place at FW? It looked like they only have the buffet table service? I like my Mickey waffles in the morning!

Bedbugs are a great reason to stay at FW instead of a hotel!

The difference between preferred and full hookup is the location. The preferred sites are close to the marina. All sites have cable.

If you are looking for dates around Thanksgiving, those dates book up fast. It would be good to book the dates as soon as you can.

There are discounts available, but they can be hard to come by.

Other than some 15 minute parking at the meadows trading post and the overflow lot, there isn't really anywhere to park a vehicle at the Fort (other than your campsite). You don't need to have a golf cart though, there are busses that run within the Fort to get you from point A to point B.

The Fort doesn't have a counter service food place that is open for breakfast. There is a limited menu by the meadows pool in the afternoon.

Good luck convincing the hubbs and have fun planning your vacation!

Biking around the Fort can be fun too. You can bring your own or rent from the Bike Barn.

Thanks for answering all my questions! We're looking at the first week of November but can't decide whether to camp or stay at a resort again. It would definitely save us money staying at FW and I think it would be lots of fun to experience something new. DH is worried about pulling the camper all the way to FL. He's claiming he needs a new truck to do it. Marriage is all about compromise- he gets a new truck, I get to go back to Disney- works for me!

I really wish FW had a food court though. I don't want to lose time from the parks cooking and cleaning up a big breakfast each morning and I don't want to eat cereal all week either. :confused3

why don't you just compromise and rent an rv and stay at the fort? there are a couple of places that will set it up for you

www.campatthefort.com
www.makecampingeasy.com

both of them are on the dis now and then and that could be an option for you if you don't want to pull the camper...

(i am not affiliated with either one of them btw)

What I used to do when I tent camped at the Fort and didn't bring ANY foodstuffs was have a quick breakfast at WL or the Contemporary. They both have very nice quick service places. There is a boat that goes to WL and the CR that starts at 6:45 am.

I would be on that first boat in the morning, have my quick breakfast at one of those locations, then start my day from there.

Now that I have my camper, when I head out early in the morning, my breakfast consists of yogurt, oatmeal, breakfast bar and juice. No eggs, but no cooking either.

Hello :) I just booked my Fort reservation for February and I received AAA discount. Just thought I would share.

It's very possible to get a discount at the Fort. Just book early, and watch the boards for when they release the discounts. All you have to do is call up, and they'll apply the discount to your reservation.

I usually head over to the Wilderness Lodge, but I usually ride the Orange bus over to the Lodge rather than take the boat. When Orange reaches the Settlement, it then changes to the WL. Makes a stop over there, then heads back into the campgrounds and down the orange road. From the the Lodge, you can take the boat or bus to MK and the bus to all the other parks.

Although a few places do serve breakfast in the morning at the parks. You can get your mickey waffles at Sleepy Hollow in the morning, and I think Seasons has waffles in the morning.

New TV? Really, that's the oldest trick in the book. You could totally lay a MM guilt trip about unsafe it must be driving this TV now and blah, blah blah.....

I would rebuke this quasi macho need for more HP (although if your TV is underpowered for the camper, safety does come first) with "I will take the TV to the shop for service, I think we need to change the motor oil and TRANSMISSION Flush and new oil ( if you have a boat include changing the differential oil, rear axle under water) and will also take the camper to the to get the wheel bearings greased (I get mine done every year before I go to FW) this is "cheap insurance"

Drop this and see what he say 1) TV Engine & Tranny oil, 2) Camper Bearings

IF he still has issues, quote out a Grand Floridan stay for the same time:rotfl2:

BTW - if you plan right you may be able to decorate and enjoy the holiday show at FW

I contacted AAA this week regarding my vacation in June '11 and was told they had discounts available:
"There are only 2 site options available at this time. Tent or pop-up - $1821.70 or full hook-up - $1951.78"

Basically a savings of $100 from when I priced it out online at the disney website.
