Few questions about airtran

Flights are available for my June trip. But I'm a little nervous about booking them. What I'm afraid of is if I book my flights and plan on arriving at a certain time and make plans for our arrival day, then a month before we leave the flight schedule changes. Either our flight is canceled, or the time has changed. What are my options if book the flights and then one of those things happen? I know I could get on another flight, but would I have to pay more if the cost is higher than I orginally paid? What if the times of the other flights don't meet my needs? Would I get a refund?
We are trying to decide between driving and flying and I'm leaning toward flying VS a 16 hour drive. But I want to know what will happen if airtran does change the schedule.

I've flown with them twice over the last year and my schedule never changed.

There was a chance of the Nor'Easter delaying our flight; AirTran sent out an email two days prior and offered to put us on a later flight at no additional charge. Thankfully, we didn't have to do that as the storm was nothing and we got there as scheduled

Edit: My post wasn't really addressing the OP's specific question about schedule changes or cancellations far ahead of time; I don't know the policies on refunds, etc. if that happens. I hope someone else does.

If Airtran changes or cancels your flight, they will notify you and you will be able to choose another flight. If you cancel then the fares are usually non-refundable and you will not be refunded. If you want to change your flight time then change fees will occur.

We have actually gotten to the airport early and have been switched to the earlier flight for no fee, but I wouldn't count on them always doing this. This was something the CS person suggested to us!
