Ferb, I know What We're Going to Do Today! - Updated 9/30

Yum, begniets! They could only be better had they come with a bib. One of my favorite uses of a snack credit!

I agree with you totally of the homey feeling of POFQ - though it was also the first place we ever stayed on site.

I wonder if it feels homey because it feels so much more cozy than any other Disney resort. Even the deluxe resorts we've visited (never stayed) all seem HUGE and sprawling. POFQ feels small - everything is so centrally located, nothing is HUGE, even the food court / dining area feels cozy.
And :cool1: for Building 5 - we were in Building 5 the last two trips there! Perfect location IMHO. Last trip there (the one where we met on the bus) we had a 1st floor room that was literally 25 feet from the food court and 50 feet from the pool. Just awesome! But the time before that we were on the opposite side of the pool, third floor as far away from the main building as possible, and I STILL loved the room location.

Man, just thinking of all that makes me want to go back there. I mean, we really enjoyed our recent stays at Pop Century - but I can't say that "I can't wait to go back there!" I really think if (when) we go in 2011, it will have to be to POFQ.

Especially as you can get the large order for one snack credit.

When I was at Boardwalk in Dec. it didn't feel to big, especially if you just looked at the Inn part, but even that didn't feel as cozy as POFQ. On prior trips I've been put in the furthest buildings away (Buildings #1 and 7) and even then it was a quick walk to the main building.

It was the perfect location. They even managed to get us the first floor room that we requested. It was perfect.

I felt the same way about AsSp. It was nice, and I would stay there again, but I wasn't thinking "Wow, I can't wait to stay here again." Now I did feel that way about the Boardwalk, but my wallet doesn't agree with that too much. I'm stretching it with the Beach Club this year, but heck you only turn 40 once and I only have to pay for half the bill. (And my tickets are already paid for which doesn't hurt either).

HI Crissy! It's been like forever since I left for vacation, and OH! how I've missed my friends here!!

So, someone took your food??!! I just don't get that!!

Unbelievable right? The woman thought she had ordered two of the chicken finger meals, not just one. When she realized that she didn't she refused to wait to replace the order for the second one, or for the guy to just make it. She took mine, which was the next order to come up. :sad2:

I love Disney, but sometimes the entitlement some people feel just irks me. Had she asked, I would have just told her to go ahead and take my order I'd wait so she could eat with her family. I was actually going to make that offer when she snagged my food.

The CM was great though. Mine ended up being nice and hot, free, and with a few extra fingers thrown in. :)

I have no desire to be in Florida in the summers permanently. My grandmother has been there for about 8 years now, still complains bitterly over it. :rotfl: It hasn't grown on her at all.

I don't even really mind the snow, it's just the horrible ice storms that drive me crazy. I really need to have different seasons to be happy. At the end of every summer, I'm always sick of the heat, and happy to be pulling out my cold weather clothes, and at the end of every winter I'm just as happy for the warmth. I don't know if I could ever really live where there wasn't a change of seasons.
!

Spoken like a true New Englander:lmao: I need the change of scenery too. I actually don't think I could ever move from NE.:lovestruc

OT, I know, but all of this talk of Story Land is making me miss Benson's Animal Farm.

And Lincoln Park.

And Rocky Point.

::sigh::

:sad1:

K. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Where are you from? I remember every summer going to Lincoln Park. And Rocky Point lives on.:cool1: I live in Warwick (the home of Rocky Point) and the city has bought some of the land and is trying to buy the rest so they can open up as a great place to go walking.

Back to the trip report: :scared1:OMG that is my biggest fear of flying out in the winter. DH always wants to go to Disney for Feb vacation but I am always afraid of flying in Feb and Mar since the weather is unpredicatable. So glad you made it though.

How did you like arriving at night? That is how we have arrived the last several trips and it is nice to wake up the next morning to fully enjoy your trip.

I don't think I could. I need two things to keep me happy where I live. A definitely change of seasons, and the ocean near by. I consider both of the fairly non-negotiable, although I did go to college for 4 years away from the ocean. My school was right on the Hudson River in NY, so at least I was still on a body of water. Not quite the same, but it made due for 4 years. ;)

I've only traveled one other time before in the winter time, and that time we lucked out and had no snow for our travel day. This really made me realize though, that this time of year you need to keep yourself a bit flexible.

My parents were pretty unfazed once they realized that Disney would let them move the start date for their package, and the airline would let us change our flights with no fees. They are both retired, and had that leeway. Me, not so much. I knew I had a week, and was so scared that I'd miss out on visiting my family altogether.

I guess there is always a chance though for bad weather any time of year, it's not just the snow that can stop you.

It was for a first for me, and I didn't really mind it. It was a much more relaxing way to start at Disney. I don't know if I would ever be able to make that my regular arrival time though. I hate giving up an entire day of Disney on my arrival day. ;)

When we got back to our room there was a bellboy dropping off my parents bags at our room. I was pretty impressed with how quickly the bags had arrived from the airport. I think we were all ready for a good nights sleep to get ourselves ready for our first Disney day.

My parents didn't have the hopper option for this trip, so with the delays we only had one full day per park. We had no real touring strategy for any of our trip other than this one morning, because of Toy Story Mania. It's probably a good thing that we did, because it was one of the busier mornings we had. Besides being a Fantasmic day, it was also the last day of ESPN the Weekend. Rope drop was crawling with tons of men with bagfulls of stuff to be autographed. I think all the wives, girlfriends and mothers were heading to TSM. ;)

Our last family trip my mother was the one in the wheelchair with a pinched sciatic nerve. This trip it was my father. Last year on our trip to the Flume in New Hampshire he tore the minsicus in his left knee. He's been going back and forth to doctors ever since, only to find out that it's a non-repairable injury. Years of physical stress from his job have done too much damage, and the tear on vacation was the final straw for it. It's not quite bad enough yet to warrant a knee replacement, but it's still pretty painful for him especially when walking up and down hills, steps and when getting up and down from a seated position. We got him the wheelchair the entire vacation, but he was pretty stubborn and refused to sit in it most of the time. :headache:He did at least say that it helped him to walk with it, using it as a walker.

Since I was the fastest walker of the three of us, the plan was for me to take all the tickets and get fastpasses, while my parents headed over to the regular line. Before heading to the rope drop area I still found time to have my mom take a picture of me and Bo. :thumbsup2

I was able to work my way through the crowd pretty easily, and was faced with the decision on whether to stay on the main road, or on the part where it splits off in front of the Brown Derby. I chose to head over to the Brown Derby and it ended up being a pretty good decision. I was right in back of the rope. Sweet!

DSC03504_opt.jpg

Rope drop went super easily. The two cast members in charge of our rope, as well as the ones on the main street walked us all the way to where the two roads met before letting the rope drop altogether. The crowd wasn't too crazy heading over to the ride and fastpass machines. The machine I got in line for was actually not working, so a cast member handed me three passes as I approached. I almost beat my parents to the main line. The sweet thing about riding TSM first thing in the morning is that the line moves pretty quickly. I love the line before the fastpass return opens and slows the line down to a crawl. For once I beat someone on this ride!

DSC03505_opt.jpg

I'll enjoy it while I can. When I go with my BFF this October, I know she'll beat me. She's just way more competitive than me. :)Since we had been handed our Fastpasses, we stopped by the machines and picked one up in the regular way on the way out.

One of best things about being there during ESPN the weekend was that there was a lot ot neat sports related streetmosphere going on. Some of the streetmosphere fans where scarily almost indistinguishable from the real fans. :)When new athletes arrived to be on the show they'd parade them down Hollywood Boulevard in a cavalcade. We managed to be there when Scottie Pippen was arriving with Minnie.

The rest of the day we spent wandering where ever struck our fancy. My last 4-5 trips have been commando style trips, so I really enjoyed taking it slow for a change. I was however a bit disappointed that the Singing in the Rain umbrella wasn't raining. In the words of LL, Pffftttt!

DSC03507_opt.jpg

At some point, my father pitched a bit of a little diva fit and stomped off for awhile. I don't even remember now what it was over, but for him this is a fairly regular occurance. My mom and I actually get a good laugh out of them, so we just enjoyed having a few minutes to ourselves and stopped to have our picture taken in front of the hat. I think the photographer was trying to block out the ESPN stage set up in front of the hat, because he got way too close.

Eventually dad rejoined us, and we went to catch one of my mother's favorite attractions, the Beauty and the Beast show.

When I had booked our ADR for the Brown Derby I was a bit worried about how early it was (3:30pm). It turned out to be a good thing. I don't think I had properly planned for how long it would take my parents to finish a meal. While I don't mind taking my time enjoying a good meal, there is a point where I start to get antsy sitting at the table for too long. We hit that point several times during this trip. How in the world have I reached the age I am without knowing my parents eat so slowly and like to linger so long? :rotfl:

Our meal at the Brown Derby was fantastic at any rate. I toyed with the idea of trying something new, but in the end I went with what I love - the crabcake appetizer and the Cobb salad for my entrée. So good! I couldn't even finish the salad they gave em so much. I had to leave room for desert, right? While I tend to stick with the same tried and true options for my meals, I will try new things for deserts. Even though I love the white chocolate toffee tower, I had to try the cheesecake that LL is always raving about. It was to die for! Utter creamy, cheesecakey goodness. Sorry no food porn from this trip! :sad1:

After dinner we headed over to the American Idol Experience. I have never actually ever seen an episode, but my mother is a huge fan and wanted to see this. I actually ended up being really pleasantly surprised. The three girls who sang where great, and the one who won was phenomenol. I hadn't been in that theater since they used to do the Superstar Television show in there, so it was kind of neat being in there again.

We had a nice leisurely walk over to the Fantasmic theater after the American Idol show. My family are all ardent NY Yankees fans, so we were pretty excited that Bernie Williams was performing on the ESPN stage as we passed by. We stopped for awhile to hear him playing.

Floridavacation2010017_opt.jpg

Fantasmic actually wasn't all that crowded that night. The theater never filled up. Since we had my father in the wheelchair, so were seated in the last row, maybe a section off from dead center. Great seats! My mother and I tend to be big kids when it comes to silly toys at Disney, my mother maybe a bit moreso than me. On a trip I took with them back in 1997, she drove us nuts the entire trip until she found a light up snowglobe Sorcerer Mickey wand she had seen a little girl with. :rotfl:This trip the two of us had spotted someone with a glow in the dark Tinkerbell pin and we had been on the hunt for them all day long. We spotted them at a cart just as we entered the theater and in a matter of minutes the two of us "kids" were sporting our new glowear. My father was a bit entertained.

One of the nice things about touring the parks in the off-season is how early they shut down. I know that sounds pretty crazy, but for a compulsive commando like me, it's almost nice to be forced out of the park and sent home before it's really late. Fantasmic was over by 7:30 and we were back in our room before it was too late. I ran back to the room to get our cups and we hung out for awhile munching on some more beignets. (Again, like dinner, really slowly!)

Back in our room we turned up the heat (I can't tell you how odd it felt to be turning on the heat while in Florida) and got to bed fairly early. Next day would be a bit more taxing at the Magic Kingdom.

Love the night up Tinks! I need one of those.

Ugh about the L-o-n-g meals. Nothing more boring than watching other people eat.

Ah, super cute picture of you and Bo!!! :lovestruc

What a great day at DHS except for your dad's diva fit!

I agree with Heidi, there is nothing more boring than watching other people eat!

I got TWO mentions in this update, I feel so special. :rotfl2:

I'm so glad you loved the cheesecake, it is my all time favorite cheesecake that I have ever eaten!

I think they shut that umbrella off in the cooler months, I don't think it was working in January when Jen & I walked by it. :confused3

As soon as I saw them I was determined to hunt one down. They are just too cute.

I still can't figure out why the meals took so long. We go out at home often, but they never take that long. Most of the time they'd be done, just nursing coffee or something. I was just getting so antsy to get out and do something else.

I always have to stop for a picture with Bo now. It's become my new routine when at DHS thanks to you and Chelsea. :)

My father is the queen of the Diva fits. He throws them all the time and goes stomping off telling my mom and I we are picking on him. If my brother is around the three of us just start getting silly over the fits.

The cheesecake was delicious. I loved the crust on the bottom. I can't wait to have it again in October.

I hope that's true about the umbrella. The temps were near freezing a few mornings, I guess it would be safer to turn it off than risk a frozen pipe. I'll have to check it out when I get there.

I missed your update yesterday... It sounds like you had a good day despite the cold! I love the picture with the glowing Tinks. I think it is so funny that you and your mother are still into light up toys! :goodvibes

I guess I really need to eat at Brown Derby at one point. I keep hearing such good reviews, but somehow I always feel that a restaurant in the park can't be a real nice signature meal... :confused3

My family is well versed in the long linger over meals, so I understand where you're coming from. Sometimes I can handle it and other times, my inner five year old is thinking, let's go already! :lmao:

Sounds like a nice day, though. :thumbsup2

My DH is a s l o w eater; drives me nuts!!!! I"m so glad I get 3 solo days to eat on my SCHEDULE!!??

YES! Cobb salad be mine! That'll be my very first dinner on a little over a month!! :thumbsup2

So glad you have your mom to do crazy and silly stuff with you! WHat a fun, fun day you had!! Tinkerbells and everything!

As we get older, the more I realize how much I'm like my mom. We both are pretty serious most of the time, but we have a secret silly side. My mom is the one who has 5 American Girl dolls. She loves them all, and is always dressing them up, and fixing their hair. My niece has told her she has enough now. :lmao:

I think the Brown Derby is, or is nearly my favorite restaurant on property. It's definitely more relaxed than the other signature restaurants, but for the food is every bit as good. I love how it feels like such a peaceful oasis in the middle of an amusement park. When your in there you tend to forget your even in a park.

Usually the lingering is left for holiday meals. I biggest memory of holiday dinners as a kid where that no one ever left the table - for hours! They'd finsih a course, and sit and chat until more food was brought out.

Maybe it's a getting older thing, they just want to get a bit more rest before heading out again? I was definitely getting antsy.

The funny thing is that usually I'm the slowest eater. As a kid I had what's called an open bite. I only had two teeth on either side of my mouth that would touch. As a result it took me forever to eat anything, and was always the last one done with my food. I had surgery on my jaw to fix the problem when I was in high school, but I still am almost always the slowest eater. When they are lingering longer than me, they are really slow!

I'm craving that Cobb salad again! I had a cobb salad from a place near my office and it wasn't nearly the same. The chunks of avacodo where way too big.

Are those like the ones the kids get with their drinks? We have a Tinkerbell and Buzzlight year one.

They are a little bit different. The drink Tinkerbell is all one color, but these were colored in in regular Tinkerbell colors so when it lights up it looks like a regular cartoon version Tink. I'll try to see when I get home if I took any pictures of them before I packed them away for the next trip. I picked up a few for my nieces too. They are so excited to wear them in August.

This is too funny. Your a girl who wants more Disney NOW!!! I eat fast so I hate waiting for people to finish their meals too.

I was really trying to embrace the relaxation of this trip, but the commando part of me sometimes had a problem with it. :rotfl:

Our holidays / family get togethers are pretty much like that too. We sit and eat and sit some more and eat some more, interspersed with lots of conversation.

I had to giggle at the imagine of the men and all of their sports things, lol! I'm glad that Fantasmic wasn't too crowded and that you had great seats. Score! We've never seens Fantasmic but I would really like to next trip maybe.
