You guys always offer the best advice. This is the first flight for us as a family so forgive my ignorance. We always drive to vacations so packing is unimportant--throw it all in the car and go! We are flying SWA and I was advised to check their site for bag limits and such and I was very pleasantly surprised when I learned that each ticketed person is allowed THREE checked bags! Wow, I can't even imagine 5 of us having 18 bags, lol. I picked up a tip to pack each suitcase with a bit of clothes for all of us just in case one is lost, someone won't be out of luck.

On to my questions.....each of us is allowed a carryon bag in addition to checked bags. What do you pack in a carryon? Is this for clothes too? Should I pack lunch/snacks?

My luggage doesn't have luggage tags or locks, where can I purchase this as SWA says all checked bags must be locked? I think one of our bags will only have another empty bag and collapsible cooler in it as we aren't planning to need five bags for clothes. Am I missing something about what we need to take? It seems absurd to me that each person would be allowed 3 bags.

One more ?: Can my husband take his golf clubs?

Carla

Carla,
First, if you are allowed 3 CHECKED bags per person and you have a family of five, the amount of luggage would be 15, not 18. :)
Secondly, SWA allows 3 checked bags per person. Yes, golf clubs can be considered checked.
Remember, there are size limitations to the checked luggage. It states that luggage SHOULD be locked, not that it has to be locked. I never lock my luggage.
The tags to put on your luggage are at the counter or at the curb check area. I grab a bunch so that I will be ready for the next trip and for the trip home. Also, I do not put my home address on the tags on the outbound part of the trip, I put the destination. I fill out the return tags the night before we leave for home.

You sure seem to be on the correct track here, and to help more, I have pasted the info from their website. Carry ons are limited in size, thank goodness, and they can be very strict about this and have seen them pull oversize stuff out of the line and gate check it, also, when the overheads fill up, they tend to do the same thing. I guess courtesy would be the rule here.

Hope this helps.

Oooops, thanks Gail, my multiplication is not what it used to be! So would you suggest valuables, ie. camera, (my dh would never consider checking his laptop, lol), video camera, etc. in the carryon? I found great prices for carryons at overstock.com and they are within the size limits of SWA. If you don't lock your luggage, have you ever had it opened or anything stolen? We have soft-sided and they only zip closed. I didn't realize the only tags we need are the ones from the airport.

See, I told you-haven't flown in ten years so I'm catching on slowly!

Most luggage has 2 zippers that meet & a lock can be put on. I tie my luggage closed using the zipper holes.

Lap tops must be charged & able to boot up at the security check-point. Carry-on luggage is a pain. Limit it if you can. There is not anuff room on the plane for everyone to store their carry-on overhead. What I bring is small bag that fits under my seat with Swim suits for everone & some cloths in case the kids have a spill.

Yes bring some snacks & games for the kids. Remember if your carry on does not fit in the xray machine they will search it. The least amount you bring on the plane the better.... you also have to carry it all threw the airport both ways. I check everything! If your flight is direct chances are your luggage will not get lost.

Great advice from Makmom,
I would suggest carrying on laptops, cameras video cameras. Be prepared, as stated to start the computer up (we have not had to do it, but, you never know). I also go with MAKmom on limiting your carryons (SWA asks that you not be a bin hog, something I totally agree with), like MAKmom, I limit my stuff to what will fit under a seat.
I have never had a problem with my luggage being tampered with. If it makes you feel better, then, by all means invest in those adorable little luggage locks that they sell at Wal*Mart or similar store. Me.......I would loose the key. :) Or, use twist ties from trash cans.
I simply don't worry about it. My bags are canvas duffel roll aways. They have a ton of zippers and compartments and since they are canvas, a lock will not deter anyone if they want something. My motto, take it, don't break it. ;)
I have a TON of SWA luggage tags that I would be happy to send to you for you to be prepared for your outbound journey. Let me know.
Also, if you can swing it, use the skycap, makes checking in a breeze. You tip the guy like a dollar a bag for about 15 bags, or 1.50 per bag for less than 6. With SWA you stand in line twice if you go the counter check in route. If you use the sky cap, you are checked in at the curb, the bags are gone and you just have to line up to get your number to board. You will probably have to stand in line to have your ticket checked before you go through security, but, that will happen regardless of how you check in.
SWA is a great airline and if your children are 4 or younger be sure to let them know so you can preboard.
Hope this helps.

Another way to take carryon is to use backpacks. The kids always take their things in them so they will have their things handy plus they will fit under the seat. Wal-mart sells multi-pack locks, i think 4 to a package that are all keyed the same so you only have to keep up with one key, one for you and one for someone else to carry. :bounce: Maybe invest in a inexpensive camera case the camera, video camera and film will all fit into, also got this a Wal-mart. Makes it easier to keep all this together and also easier for them to check.:smooth:

skycap and how do I use it. Checking at the curb sounds great no matter the cost as my sons are not under 4 but not much use for carrying bags. We're looking to purchase some rolling bags. The 6 and 9 yr old won' t be able to do much beyond their backpacks. Also, are gameboys allowed?

Carla

Carla,
Yes, gameboys are allowed. They must be shut off at take off and landing.
Sky Caps, ah, they are wonderful!!!!! You drive up to the entrance to your airline, you will see people out there around the entrance with luggage carts, you catch their eye (easy to do), they will come to the car and as you unload your bags, they will load them on to a luggage cart, you hand them your tickets and proper id and they will check you in, check in your bags (you will get to see that they are coded for the proper airport this way, MCO is for Orlando), you hand them the appropriate tip and you are done!!!! It is so easy.
Dee usually pulls up to the curb, unloads the luggage from the trunk, shows the skycap his ID and takes off to park the car. I finish the rest of the transaction. I usually wait no longer than 10 mins. and he is back from parking the car and we get our boarding numbers and enter the plane with just our laptop/digital camera stuff in one easy to carry backpack, which fits under the seat. This works well for us, but, with kids, I am not sure how I would handle it. Probably the same because they knew they would die (just kidding) if they did not listen to me and behave. ;)
If you are not using SWA, don't fear as the other airlines work along the same lines. With an eticket with Delta, they can check you right in and there are no lines (except security and boarding) to contend with.
I can tell you, you will feel rather smug and smart when you enter the terminal and see all the people with their bags in line waiting at the ticket counter. It is worth, to me, every penny of that tip NOT to have to wait in that line and shlep that luggage in that line.
I purchased some rolling duffles, on clearance, at Wal*Mart, and they are great, I really think they hold more than a normal suitcase. If you can find something like this you might want to compare the actual sizes between a duffle and a regular suitcase.
Hope this helps.

That clarifies the skycab which I appreciate. I'm going to print your answer and pack it with my SWA reservations form. Just one more question, I promise, lol. To utilize this skycab, we have to actually drive right up to the airport? We were planning to park offsite somewhere. Again, we don't know much about flying but the BWI airport online info lists onsite parking as hard to come by (our flight isn't until 11:10am) and expensive. My husband can drive us to the airport curb and then go park somewhere but I think we're talking about a 45 min wait for him to get back to us. I cannot get boarding passes alone right? Oooops, that's more than one question, lol.

carla

Carla,
The skycap can work one of two ways. Sometimes you drive up and they come right out to the car. More often there are men (or women) standing behind a counter in front of the airport and you stand in a short line and give them your luggage.

If you are parking off site at most airports the shuttle will drop you off right at the entrance and you can either give your luggage to the skycap or carry it on in and check it. So just go with your husband to the offsite parking and ride the shuttle.

I don't lock my luggage and have not had any issues. However, if someone wants in your luggage those cute little locks at Walmart will NOT keep them out. I do carryon all computers and other electronics even if I can't turn them on.

When you get to security be sure that you, the kids and especially your husband empty ALL pockets! Pocket change, keys etc.. will set off the metal dectector. They will have little plactic tubs to put the stuff in. I would send one parent thru then the kids and then the second parent. That way if one of you is selected for the random search the other can keep an eye on the kids.

Also, try not to use ALL 15 pieces of luggage. Remember you have to haul it around unless you want to keep paying out tips.

You can use any luggage tags. My luggage has a spot on the side where you can put a tag and I have just placed my business card in there. Also, I like colorful luggage tags so I can find my bags at the baggage claim. Since I and all of America favor black luggage this allows me to identify mine quickly as it comes around on the belt.

No Carla, you don't have to drive to the curb, you can use a shuttle. :)
No, for SWA you need to be in the line so they can check the ID to the ticket.

How far are you form the airport? If you can get someone to drop & pick you up it is much easier. Are you renting a car in Orlando?
