DS' 19th birthday is today and he is off at college--8 hours away. It wasn't feasible for DH and I to go visit, plus I'm not that sure DS really wanted us to.;) Anyway, this is the first birthday we haven't spent together and I must say it feels really strange. I haven't even called him yet because God forbid I wake him up on a Saturday! The upside is that DD20 drove to visit with some friends and is surprising him by bringing his best friend along, too. I'm sure he'll have a great day. It's me that's miserable.:sad1:

On the flip side. Today is my birthday and two of my sons live too far to come and join me for cake. That's OK of course with me AND I get more cake!!!

That must be hard on you! They just grow up so darn fast. There was a whole thread on this yesterday and I must say, there were a lot of sentimental moms posting. Thats great your dd will be going to see him. Maybe do something special just you and your husband today!:grouphug:

I only have 1 son (he's 15) and I'm dreading when he goes away to college! It's gone by so fast and I know he'll be leaving before I know it. I'll be feeling just like you.
I hope you feel better after you talk to him!

My DS is a HS Senior and I've already dreading that I will miss his birthday next March (March '10) when he is in college next year. How lame is that :-(

Happy Birthday to you, Kitty! Thanks to all for the hugs--I do appreciate it.

She's a great sister to him. DH and I are going out to dinner tonight with my DB and DSIS and then to the movies. Good idea!:thumbsup2

My DS just turned 11 the other day. I let him stay home from school with me for a Mommy & boy day, we went shopping for his birthday present and then to lunch where I enjoyed every moment of his company. I did it because I know my time with him like this is limited... I try not to think about it but I know someday I'll be in the same boat as Timeforme. My DH finds it amusing that I collect time with my kids like treasure but I'm not changing.

Here is a :grouphug: for everyone who is going trough this, its a shame that the reward for doing a good job parenting is goodbye:grouphug:
I used to do things like that, too. Good for you. They will have great memories. And it's so true what you said about goodbye. I guess our job is to give them wings.

Called him a little while ago and he was still sleeping.;)

Not lame at all. ;)

I know EXACTLY what you are feeling!! We have 2 DSs in college. We had to drop off youngest (freshman) DS at college on his birthday. DH took him out, about 3 1/2 hours away. The day before we had a pretty hefty snowfall, so the birthday plans were kind of off. He had a really lame 19th birthday. :guilty:

 My DS22 goes to the local university so we have been able to celebrate birthdays with him. Otherwise, I know I would experience an emptiness on his birthday.

:grouphug: To all who missed or are missing their child's birthday, I sympathize with you. I hope you find a special way to commemorate the event.
