I have to leave my yard of 17 years and move! 17 years of compost and plantings!! I have vinca, hydrangeas, jasmine, honeysuckle, azaleas, crepe myrtles, roses, iris, peonies, fountain grass, Japanese maples, river birches, daffodils, elephant ears and a vast amount of daylilies.

My mother passed away and left me her home about 7 miles from here. My plan is to "hack away" today and take about half of every daylily I have and do an immediate transplant to new garden. Anyone have any experience doing this in the spring?

I feel pretty sure the coneflowers and rubekia will handle this with ease, but not too sure about the others. Any ideas?

The daylilies will do just fine. For the peonies I'd just take part of the root and leave part behind. It will take a year or two to get bloom on the peonies.

I wish you well with the transfers. Transporting them a distance of only 7 miles will make the transition a bit easier for the plants. Can you imagine if you were several hours away!

The azaleas will be no problem transplanting at this time.

My new daylily literature said that it is best to divide them in August after blooming BUT it also said they can be planted from late April to early May or late August to September after bloom season.

I would take whatever I could get and transplant and then just baby them in their new home.

Yeah, it's great to be able to go by the book but sometimes we just gotta do what we gotta do when we gotta do it. So, again, I wish you well. I'm sure everything will survive fine. (*crossing my fingers and toes for you just to be on the safe side*)

I am in the stages of moving a large perennial bed...so everything i have is being moved... think you'll be just fine!

First I am sorry about the passing of your mom.

I have transplanted many a daylily, iris and daffadil bulbs in the spring and have had not problems at all.

Good luck with your new home.

Laura

I'm so sorry about your Mom.....*HUGS*
