*Feed your family high quality, nutritional food challenge*

It's Lentil Tuesday!

I'll be going to my favourite takeaway for some form of curried lentils, rice, chickpeas, and some form of curried veg. (and it runs at half price after 5pm, so that counts as budget friendly)

The owner of this place has written a healthy heart Indian cookbook series; I own several and it is great low fat Indian food.

Are the cookbooks somewhere like Amazon? Or do they just sell them locally? DH and I love Indian but our place never came back after the hurricane.

This is not a thread to impress one another with how much money we can save and how nutritionally dense we can make our meals. The challenge is NOT to feed your family PB & Fluff sandwiches for .25 or 1 can of tuna and a slice of bacon for 7 people. The challenge is to feed your family good quality, well balanced, satisfying meals 90% of the time. I am looking for recipes to serve my family which will provide healthy meals and include a lot of fruits and veggies.
This is the first paragraph in the OP. It has nothing to do with budgets, or saving money, there fore, this should be moved to the CB.

DMM - do you watch Food Network? Alton Brown did a show last week where he made his own food dehydrator with a box fan. It was pretty cool.

Oh how cool! I missed that!

mmm..Lentils sound good! My mom makes a fabulous Lentil soup!! I will def. have to snag that recipe when I see her next!

OK here's what we had today.

Breakfast
Lowfat granola cereal with 1% milk (me)
cereal(honey nut cheerios) with whole milk, cantaloupe and waffles (son)

lunch
sandwiches (ham, turkey, cheese, lettuce, mayo),chips, plums, cantaloupe, iced tea

Dinner
Spaghetti with meatballs, salad, garlic bread, soda

snacks
coffee cake
ice cream
fruit
chips

Not exactly healthy, but we'll get there sooner or later.

I'm not posting my dinner on here. It's not cardboard and it IS fish, but I don't think the way I'm preparing it is exactly low cal or healthy!:lmao:

I have been eating tons of fruit since I've quit smoking, though.:thumbsup2

I promise I do well all day, but at night I'm in a rut as to what to make anymore. I look forward to reading here and getting many good ideas!

You are wrong - the first sentence makes it known that this thread will not cater to the lowest common denominator.... those who can eat the cheapest. Just that it is not a contest. NOT to see who can have the most expensive meal.

I have learned some great recipes here that WILL save me money and sound great and meet my nutritional guidelines.

I did not rain on the other thread, why do you have to come on this thread if you have nothing relevant to add?

Wow, that really hurts. I looked at the other thread when it first started and saw that the foods didn't fit in my family's diet. I never posted anything negative about what people said they eat; I just didn't post on that thread and didn't continue to read it because it didn't apply to my situation, which includes two family members on a low-carb diet and another who has a rare metabolic disorder which requires special attention to her diet. I've posted here because the other posts on this thread have inspired me to improve on what I'm feeding my family and I wanted to try to help others in the same way they have helped me; it was not to thumb my nose at anyone. I hope this thread will not be closed because it has been a big help to me and has had lots of positive information.

Wow, if you think that hurts you should have read some of the rude, attacking and insensitive things people said to those of us to choose to eat on a budget. I also feed family members with medical disorders that require a strict, specialized diet. I just shop smart and do it on a shoestring.

I am sorry if my comment offended you. It was definitely not intended that way. I just think it is unfair that a thread designed to help people eat on a budget was closed while this one remains on the budget board.

Just ignore. I believe she may be trying to get this thread closed down too.

================================

I have to agree I am loving the recipes posted here, it helps plan the weekly menu and then I have one big list to take the the grocers! That really helps me save money as usually I am at the grocery store every other day trying to figure out what to get for that days meals!

LOVED LOVED LOVED the Hummus recipe!!! I always buy mine and this was so much cheaper, easier and yummier!! Thanks!

Dinner tonight:

organic chicken breast (not too thick)- cut a slit in the middle
add some fontina cheese
add basil leaf on top of each breast
wrap with a slice of proscuitto secure with toothpick

Cook on stove top, about 8 minutes on each side.

I am doing steamed shrimp for dinner, with a little creole seasoning and some steamed veggies. I should be eating leftover chili, but that can wait till tomorrow....My shrimpies are calling my name!:lmao:

Tink38- Are you in NOLA? Or still missing it?

Anyone have a recipe for baked fish?

We usually have fish on Friday or Saturday, but it's always fried.

This thread is to help people eat on a budgetin ahealthy, it is just not a 10$ a day budget.

Well there certainly seems to be a lot of "arm chair moderating" going on on this thread.

"This thread does not belong here."

"This thread does belong here."

"The other thread should not have been closed."

and so on and so forth.

I don't like "pulling rank" on any of you, but unfortunately, it seems to warrant it.
Publicly criticizing Moderator decisions is not permitted on the DIS and you can receive infraction points for doing so.
I know that there is disappointment in the closing of the $10 a day thread, but it was the Mods decision to close it. We did not feel that anyone set out to purposely close it. But to try to purposely post to get a thread closed will result in infraction points.

As I said, I know that there is disappointment in the closing of the $10 a day thread, but there are many other ways of sharing grocery saving and menu planning tips.

And in the end there are the DIS Guidelines for Posting http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm that are to be followed. Particularly these ones:
3. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

and

7. MODERATORS: The DIS has a wonderful group of Moderators who have volunteered to assist our visitors and monitor the boards. Part of their responsibilities is ensuring that our guidelines are followed which may require that a thread is edited, deleted, closed or moved. If these decisions impact you, we ask that you respect them. Should you have any questions, please direct them to admin@wdwinfo.com. Any discussion about a Moderating decision that takes place on the boards could result in an infraction.

So could we just get back to being good DIS citizens?

Thanks!

Any type of fish in particular? I'm looking for my poaching directions tonight I can give a looksee to see what I can find. Any limitations?

Thanks for the recipe. I will have to try it because the one I bought yesterday was just a waste of $3. How much garlic do you put in?
I add in just a little garlic powder, with the other spices, process the whole thing & taste it. You can always add more later. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before adding any more spices as the flavors get stronger after sitting.

Have you ever tried it with just dill? Yummy! I make it with cumin and paprika as well but occasionally I'll just do dill. Refreshing change.
Lisa
Thanks! I'm interested in another flavor. Dill does sound yummy!

Have you ever tried it with canola oil? This looks great thanks for sharing
I think olive oil is usually used because of the extra flavor olive oil adds. Canola oil might not have enough taste to it.

where do you guys get raw milk? in NY, you could get the stuff for use in "pet food" but in Maryland I haven't found anything. I like to make homemade yogurt and farmer cheese and I need raw milk for that.

Before I could buy it at the grocery store, I would get it from one of the larger health food stores in our area. I found them doing a Google search for raw milk. Sadly, the price hasn't gone down with the increased availability here though.

The key word is WAS. Until the thing. My husband worked for one of the Sonestas. They tried to relocate us to Miami for less $$$. Nice, huh?

Fish is great baked in foil packets. Just brush the foil with oil to keep the fish from sticking. Add your favorite veggies thinly sliced (onions, peppers, tomatoes, squash etc) and some seasoning (pepper, a little salt and a little garlic) and an ice cube(to add moisture and create steam). Close the packets up and bake for about 20 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
