There is a website that gives you these frugal type of meal ideas, it's called:
http://www.heymomwhatsfordinner.com

Yes, but you have to pay for the service of her planning out the meals. I could do that myself and save 2.50 a week.

another website:

Hillbilly Housewife has many recipes, that are very cheap. I cook her "Taco Rice (with beans added)" at least once a week. She also shows you how to feed your family for $45 a week, starting with no food at all. Although, not all of those recipes were loved by my family..

It's something to read, and ponder. Try a few recipes, and see what you think.

Fast Food Companies do not give away food Please don't ask they have to throw it away at the end of the night due to health laws.

I like hillbilly housewife she gives some great ideas. I couldn't do her menu alot of the time since my hubby wants meat of some kind with his dinner. But if i took her menu and added want not it turned out pretty good.

That's how I feel. We don't eat much meat, so that's not an issue.. but some of her recipes are a bit bland.. so, I spice them up. It's a great starting point though, which really helped me cut my budget down.

I remember the first time i followed her menu plan shopping list then added the meat for my hubby I giggled spending 55 for the week because the week before i spent 125 for a family of 3 1/2 at the time lol:rotfl:

Have you tried taking the Zucchini and lasagna and using a Alfredo sauce instead of a tomato base sauce. It's very good I also layer it with zucchini and spinach and garlic mixture.

yes, they do actually. our local cinabun gives out the boxes at night before they throw them away as well. sometimes there will be bums outside waiting for them to throw them out, and the workers just give htem away to them.

I have to agree with the PP. I work in the food industry. Perhaps it's different state to state. But, we can't give away food at the end of the shift, due to health codes.

great idea. I will use that one maybe next week:woohoo: . The zuchanni with the parmasan cheese was soooooooooooooooooo good. We have left overs. I made 2 pan s of it. I did use the entire jar of parm, so I need to add 1 more $ to my day total:teacher:

Glad you liked the zucchini with parmesan. I love it too! My mom always made it by slicing the zuccinis lengthwise, but I like the rounds better--more cheese! Plus, you can use the bigger "bat sized" zucchini.

This is just for me. I know I live in NYC which is pretty expensive - but I am having trouble still figuring out how some people are feeding an entire family of 4+ people for less than it costs to feed one person in NY for a day.

Well you did eat lunch out and when ever I eat any meals out even just snacks its over 10.00 and sometimes its WAY over .

But yes in general it looks like your foods are costing more .
I will say we visited NYC for 4 day a few yrs back and could NOT believe 99% of the prices they wanted us to pay for things .

Also is that the price of just one piece of chicken ?

Can I ask why so many are eating canned veggies now when the fresh ones from the farmer are so much tastier and better for you.

Also canned food has a chemical, it ends with an A, that is considered to be extremely bad for children and maybe linked to the rising rates of ADD/ADHD and autism.

Frozen veggies are far better to eat than canned. The canned are just full of salt.

mickeyfan, I've wondered that, too. Even small cities have farmer's markets--there are roadside stands and U-Pick places right and left up here (granted, I live rural...). Visit a farmer's market in the last hour--they practically GIVE the produce away, and I know in Schenectady, probably elsewhere, they take food stamps and WIC.

My kids LOVE to go to U-Pick places. We freeze berries and they help make jam and think it's the best thing! And there's nothing like blueberry pancakes on Christmas morning--or the satisfaction your child gets form knowing they contributed to the feast.

I did notice that a lot of people here garden--I'm not the gardening sort, but I will splurge on fresh corn on the cob. Aint nuthin' better this time of year!
