Fed employee disapointed

Interesting first post. Your wife's employment is not Disney's problem.

That's kind of rude. Way to make someone feel welcome here. Everyone knows it's not Disney's problem, but my guess is there are lots of people just like him, myself included, who wants to know their options as far as payoff dates.

When I called Disney to ask about it before I paid mine off, she said that they are "keeping track" of the number of phone calls concerning the furlough. Who knows, maybe Disney will later make an exception. I wouldn't count on it, but it could happen I guess.

You cannot add tickets to a "room only" reservation. A room only is exactly that a room only. You can buy tickets when you get there and IMO the dining plan is a waste a money. I would cancel the package. Book a room only and go from there.

You must have not read the rest of my post where I addressed how this happens. You can "add" tickets and dining to a room-only (as that is how many people ask for it when they call their TA or Disney regarding a current room only reservation) and Disney will book a package at that time (if there is room availability) and then cancel and refund the room-only. If the CM says there isn't availability at the same resort and room category that is currently booked, you need to ask for a supervisor who can facilitate the change-over without losing the room (again, a discount may be lost, but the room shouldn't). I was using layman's terms since the OP is a Disney newbie. Booking a room-only and then changing to a package (on a non-discounted trip) close to arrival is one trick to maximize your travel plan flexibility and extend your payment "deadline" and also limit your losses should you need to cancel between 5 and 45 days before arrival. If you have a package booked already, you are out $200 after the final payment date but a room-only can be canceled without penalty until 5 days before check-in.

Following 9/11, Disney offered guests the opportunity to cancel or re-book without penalty. It took them about a week or so to reach that decision and it only affected arrivals up to a certain point. I distinctly remember this because we had a land/sea trip booked for Dec. of that year and our final payment was due in mid-October. We could have canceled our trip with no penalty but not once the final payment was made. Those who had already made their final payments were offered the ability to cancel without penalty if they were nervous about travel.

My point is this: Disney can be somewhat slow to evaluate a situation before making a decision. They may be waiting, just like many of us, to see how the chips fall. I admire those of you who are dealing with the furloughs and still managed to keep your vacation budgets in tact. But I can still muster some sympathy for the people who now find their long-awaited vacation dreams dissolving before their eyes because of a government that cannot/will not work together and negotiate for the good of the country.

. . . Hope we don't have to cancel our first family trip to the mouses house!!! . . .

1) When people graze from the public trough, they take what is given.
2) You take the good and you take the bad.
3) As a PP said, if this ruins the vacation, then maybe it should be cut back.
4) Or, eliminated.

This is too bad, but seriously? I am sympathetic about the government shutdown, but if your pay being delayed a little over a week (so far) is so financially damaging, it's probably not a good idea to take an expensive vacation.

Why in the world are you surprised that you are expected to honor Disney's payment terms?

:thumbsup2

There are many companies that allow deferred payment when you are in hardship. Mortgage companies allow it, auto finance companies allow it, many others allow it. The OP simply wanted to see if Disney would defer payment. The OP is not asking for any freebees. Whats the big deal?

I completely agree. I will never understand why people post nothing but hateful comments on this site. Why kick someone when they're down? Give helpful advice or move on. It really isn't that difficult. :confused3

Really disappointed in Disney. We have a trip planned for early December and my wife as a federal employee is currently not being paid. Our deposit is due at the end of this month and we may need to use the trip money to cover living expenses until back pay is restored; if it is restored. Disney was not willing to extend the period of when final payment is due. Reply was to come for less time or stay in a cheaper resort. Hope we don't have to cancel our first family trip to the mouses house!!! Really surprised.

I would call back, a few years back I had a problem with the final date and they extended it a week..

Housing and transportation are viewed quite differently than a Disney vacation by most folks, I would think. Two are needs. The other is a want.

Maybe as a business they don't want to start that tread.

The other examples give are of assets and a Disney trip really isn't an asset no matter how many times I tell my husband it is. :)

Lol. Its how the budget board operates. Never be nice when you can be rude.

Op, give it a few days and call back. I've been getting emails from my credit union and my credit card bank (chase and TD Bank) saying they are working with federal employees, waiving fees and such on mortgages and other payments.

It may be time to reevaluate the trip and go into "hunker" down phase. a friend of mine owns an office furniture supply business. 85% of her business is from federal contracts. She has gone into what she calls "financial ramadan". She has seriously cut down spending until this is over.

I believe a majority of people taking disney vacations have some debt, if what some post you should not take a vacation unless you are debt free..To each their own, if I waited until I was debt free I would never be able to take a vacation with my family..Most people on DIS are friendly and a great help, others are rude and always make snarky comments to others..I will never judge anyone, I dont care if they are a hundred thousand dollars in debt and want to take their kids to disney its their life and their debt..Could I build a new deck on the back of my house instead of going to disney, you bet!!!! But what memories I make with my family at disney out trumps building a new deck this year, it can wait till next year..Ohhh wait unless I decide I want to go to disney again..:goodvibes So to the OP I hope they extend it for you, go have fun and hopefully this silly shutdown will be over before you go..

Furloughed fed here. With a Disney trip for later this month. Fortunately, I worked a ton of overtime last year, so I exchanged a lot of the OT for Disney gift cards at Target and Krogers during their pump points promotion. As a result, most of my trip is paid for. My big worry is being called back as an essential employee and having leave cancelled for the duration of the shutdown. My DD is an essential government employee. She's supposed to go with us; however her employer has cancelled all leave until the shutdown is over.

I may be raked over the coals for this one, but I may incur some debt to pay off your vacation. We'll probably get paid for this unwanted vacation, so it's a short term thing. Is there a credit card you could use to pay off the balance? And until the end of this "holiday," I would keep spending at a bare minimum. Right now, beenie weenies for supper isn't a bad thing.

No real advice to the OP, but I just wanted to say to Eliza61, that I so enjoy your posts! They always make me laugh!

:sad2:

No one made hateful comments. If you want to participate on public message boards without becoming offended, you need to grow a thicker skin.

OP seems surprised that he is being held to the terms of the payment agreement. That surprises me. Why would Disney make an exception because he is having financial problems?

Being offended or not has nothing to do with my comment. Just because you don't get offended by something that is said, doesn't make it okay for people to be rude. In my opinion, comments such as this...

are unnecessary and rude. I'm sure OP realizes that it is not "Disney's problem", but there is a precedent for accommodating guests in a national crisis. The last thing OP needs to read as a brand new member is a bunch of insulting posts. As I said before, why kick someone when they're down?

Op said he was disappointed. Totally understandable. Every body in life hits a financial landmine. I know I definitely need my paycheck and as much as I Trey to be a big gal, when real life craps on me it is disappointing Especially when it's a situation that you have absolutely no control over.

And many banks and companies ARE making accommodations in this situation. Nothing wrong with that? Why is it so horrible for a company to be, oh i don't know? Nice. Oh the horror.

This isn't due to a "national crisis"; it's about poor money management in the first place and expecting someone else to accommodate the consequence. No one should be going to Disney if they don't have enough savings to cover even a few months' worth of living expenses. Call that rude if you will; I call it basic financial common sense. This isn't an asset like a house or car that provides a long-term benefit and where financing is expected and part of the economic model.

People lose jobs and have financial curveballs thrown at them all the time, whether they're a federal employee or not. Not going on vacation is not a "hardship". It's one thing to be disappointed that you can't go. It's quite another to complain that Disney is at fault for that disappointment.
