February 2021 W.I.S.H. - Being your own Fabulous Self

I eat what I want on vacation. At Disney I tend to eat steak at every dinner. My favorite place is Teppen Edo. I get steak here too but I have to tell them without the soy sauce as I don't like it. They look and me funny every time and ask me several times if I am sure. Same with DD's plain chicken and to keep everything separate so she will eat it. I also really liked my steak at the Italian restaurant at the Boardwalk. I do eat some snacks but nothing specific. Just depends on what I want at that time. Tends to be something cold because we usually go the week of Labor day. I do really miss Mickey Waffles. That is what I eat for breakfast every day. Lunch is usually a burger and fries.

In addition to any current woohoo's let's get woohoo-y about some best any days ever, so not big days with celebrations or holidays, what is a memory of an ordinary day that turned into something extra special that warms your heart just to remember it?

Woohoo we are having really nice weather this week, Spring is coming for sure. And woohoo, I've had some quiet block of time and gotten some work things done this week.

Best day: Back when my Brother still had a boat, so over 10 years ago, we twisted his arm to take us out for a trip up the Duwamish River. So we put the boat in at the launching ramp on the West Seattle side and went up around Harbor Island, where all the cargo ships come in and there's a large boat yard, thru the industrial area and up the river, under bridges (including the now broken WS Bridge). It was so cool to see an area we all knew quite well, having grown up not far away, from the perspective of being on the water. Then we came back down the river and cut across Elliot Bay, along the city waterfront and over to the marina on the other side, where Martha Stewart's boat happened to be moored. It was just the best day, good weather, everyone was in to what we were doing and in great spirits and it just felt so good to be together on the water.

I think about it every time I do my beach drive and go past the boat launch ramp, and it still makes me happy.

I LOVE this idea, but it deserves some thought, so I will be back later with my response.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!
This is a special day for my family bringing back many good memories. My grandfather emigrated from Ireland, and I married an Irishman. Corned Beef is a must, Bailey's Irish cream shakes, and living near NYC, green bagels became a newer tradition along the way. I've been celebrating for days...

Woohoo - my sister had a healthy baby girl
Woohoo - it’s spring on Saturday

Best Days: Saturday was a great day because my sister had her baby and surprise, our hot tub was delivered! Strange to have no notice, but happy it’s here. Just need the electrician to come out now to hook it up. Then I got the privilege of being the one and only visitor at the hospital. So I got to go meet my niece face-to-face and hold her first! But what I enjoyed even more was just sitting and talking with my sister & brother-in-law with no distractions.

Anotger great day I often recall was a day trip to the beach with my friend. We used to teach together, but she resigned to be a stay at home mom. My twins were probably about 6. At the time she had a daughter their age and a son slightly younger and another daughter who was only about a year old. While on the beach, an older couple offered us their rented umbrella and lounge chairs, as they were done in the beach but had rented them for the whole day. Then I held her daughter while she napped on my chest and the other kids played together nicely. My friend and I got to talk and catch up. I just remember everything being so peaceful in that moment.

My WooHoo is that I was able to get a vaccine appointment for DH for next week Thursday. 40+ opens on Friday and 16+ opens on the 29th. I am also woohooing that DH is not as mad at me as I thought. I originally had an appointment for this Friday but he wouldn't take it because he has a big work training Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday that he didn't want to be sick for. I got really mad and so did he. I thought he was being crazy for not taking it as he would be fine by Monday and he was mad that I tried to get an appointment before the training when he told early in the morning that he didn't want it after. Well in my frustration and being really mad I went to text my mom to tell her how mad I was and I texted DH instead. We didn't talk for a bit but finally talked at about at about 11 last night. He wasn't even mad at what I texted. He knew I was going to vent to my mom. He was just mad that I was not listening to him. All is good now. I am still looking for a new appointment somewhere closer and will look at CVS on Friday (you have to put eligibility requirements in first). CVS here is doing J & J and he would rather have that but is happy to just have an appointment. So If I don't find anything else he will go to this one.

I have many favorite memories. All are with family. Going to the zoo when I was younger with my aunts family and my mom locking her purse, with the keys, in the truck so my step dad had to leave work to get us. Going to Myrtle Beach with the same aunt's family as kids. Getting my finger smashed in the door as my cousin and I ran around the condo. We were having fun. Going to Disney with my dad. See the kids on this trip being so amazed with the characters and watching the interactions with them. The other trips with just the 4 of us to Disney. There are just so many memories.

On another trip to Myrtle Beach my cousin (the one that smashed my finger in the door) and I drove separately. He just finished his first year of college and I had just graduated high school. Our parents gave us a lot more freedom. One of the day we went to Charleston and did a tour and walked around. It was so much fun. Then on another day we went to with my aunt and uncle to Wilmington (I think) for the day. I wasn't a beach person so this was such a nice trip. We drove back a day earlier then the family as well.

The first one that pops into my mind is actually a holiday, but the "best day ever" part has nothing to do with the celebration; it was about something really simple:

It was July 3rd, years and years ago, and we were spending the week at my Dad's in New York State. We were staking out a spot at the park to see fireworks, and DS discovered fireflies for the first time! I'd grown up with them, but he had never seen them where we live now. The look on his face was pure magic, and watching him share that moment with his grandfather was icing on the cake.

In 2015, we had a trip planned staying Standard Garden View at the Contemporary. We really wanted a room in the tower, but it wasn't in our budget. One ordinary school day, I stopped at the grocery store after school. While walking back to my car after shopping, my cell phone rang. It was my Travel Agent. She told me that she found a deal for a free upgrade to the 11th floor (one floor down from Atrium Club Level) Bay Lake View, and we got a small refund. In the middle of the grocery store parking lot, I burst into tears of joy!

The view from our room:

My husband was doing work in NYC some years ago and my daughter and I joined him for several days-we took the ferry to Ellis Island (it snowed!) and had the place to ourselves. Returned to our lovely hotel (the Michelangelo) and had tea and cookies. Then we had a fabulous dinner at a little restaurant before we saw a Broadway production of Grease. Just a perfect day spent with my darling daughter!

This story reminded me of when my kids were little and we went to visit my parents in the fall. I had grown up on an acre of land that was outlines with maple trees. So every fall, we did a ton of raking and it was a huge family chore that lasted several weekends. Even as adults, we would travel back home one fall weekend to help with the leaves. But all of a sudden, when the kids were probably about 4, it turned into a fun weekend as my kids discovered the joy of jumping in leaf piles and riding in the trailer of the riding mower filled with leaves. Thanks for reminding me of the joy of the little things!

Thankful for the students’ families who joined me yesterday for our Workshop Wednesday. Once a month, we have parents join their student in a workshop (usually in school, but virtual this year). During the workshop, I share quick little games to play to help reinforce what we are learning on school. Yesterday’s topic was math and number sense. About half the families attended, which is decent since some are unable to attend due to work. I send videos home to those who didn’t attend.

Thankful for spring sports starting. My son is playing baseball and my daughter is playing lacrosse. Last year they didn’t get to have a spring sports season. So thankful they can this year.

Thankful for the longer days of sun and the Spring is soon here!

And of course, thankful for my healthy new baby niece! Here’s a dose of cuteness to start your day 🥰
