February 2009 - Walt's Warriors!!

Well done everyone on their weekend races and long runs!

I didn't get much done as far as running on the weekend. Took my fiance (who is currently in PT for a knee injury) for a short and slow 3 mile run Saturday, and then took the dog out for another 3 miles on Sunday morning (he had a great time, despite the fact that a Lab tried to eat him. He maintains that he's bigger than the lab and could have taken him, but is too polite for that sort of stuff. I say that he started it.). I checked my calendar upon getting home and learned that I was supposed to do 4 miles, so ooops! Today was a cross training day, so I did 40 minutes on the stationary bike with my guilty-pleasures Tudor romance novel, which is a nice change of pace.

Hope everyone had a great President's Day Monday!

Oh yeah, ImMarcik PM Tracy your email address and she'll send you a link for the spreadsheet and just plug in your numbers. Easy..even for me;)

Thank you! I got it and added my stats. It's not looking so good. But, I did have to take it easy when I got sick. I am excited though, last night was my best run yet!!!! 2.32 miles in 35 minutes. Tonight is wii fit!

Kat - Yay on the shoes working well!

SO sorry, work is taking over my world a bit again. No time to catch up with everyone. :guilty:

I did my 5K Saturday on ice. 34 minutes. OK for us. DId 15 min of yoga-laties last night and left. LOTS of laties adn no yoga. Grrr... I've never rbdreamed of walkign out on a class todya, but I didn't sign up fo Abs of Steel and that's all we were going ot do. Went home. DId anothe r30 min of yoga on my own adn then a combo of wii fit activies fro 42 min. So, I got what I needed.

Have a good week everyone!

Carrie: Sorry to hear that you had to walk out of a class - that's pretty bad when it gets that far.

YEAH on new shoes - it's always fun - just remember not to look at the receipt.

AFM: I got a must needed massage today. (I am a member of Massage Envy) I get the deep tissue stuff , so I had some knots that the girl found and my left calf muscle was really tight, more than what I thought. She even put some biofreeze on it to help me out.
I then headed over to the hospital for my yearly mammo (sorry, probably TMI for some) then out for a 4.03 mile walk. I decided on a neg spilt workout. so mile one was 15:06, mile 2 14:59, mile 3 14:15 and last mile was 13:43!! So, a pretty good walk workout tonight. Time was 58min 26 sec. I did a 5min warmup and a 5min cooldown with about 5 min of stretching.

Tracy

Way to go everyone with your miles and repetitions.

I got out for 8.5 miles, up Diamond Head and back. 1:14:33.

Hey Warriors-

I need some cold weather advice! I signed up for a 10k this weekend. It's at 7:30 a.m. Right now they are predicting 37 degrees at 6:00 a.m. It's a flat, shady course with some open marshy areas that could be windy. I was planning on wearing a tank and skirt, but I'm guessing that's out. Now I'm thinking maybe L/S shirt with WISH tank, gloves, hat, and either running pants or maybe the skirt.

The good news is I will run to the start from my house (about 1/2 mile) and there's some coffee shops/hotels we can invade for heat, so I shouldn't have to get too cold standing around. Any tips? I usually don't go outside in this kind of weather! As always, this better be a cute t-shirt!!

Well...I totally bailed on my LR on Sunday. We had a major storm going through and while it wasn't raining, the wind was horrible!!! I can run in a downpour (which I did last night), but I can NOT run in the wind! I just can't...I just can't seem to catch my breath. So I bailed...sorry team.

But I was back at it last night...in the pouring rain! 5.5 miles! It was so much fun!

Jen,

I live in central Texas and I think our weather is pretty comparable to yours. It is suppose to be 81 for a high to day here then high 42 on saturday yikes. Defintely go with the pants. In the short time it takes you to run the 10k. I don't think you would warm up that fast. Of course I am a wimp and hate cold weather. Yes, I would wear a long sleeve shirt that would keep the moisture away from your skin cause when you get done you will be cold if you sweat. Defintely do the hat and gloves. You will be glad you did.:)

I take a change of clothes if I am outside to long after a run when it is cold I have gotten sick from the damp clothes after a race cause I got to cold afterwards. Hope this helps have fun.

Hey Warriors!

It looks like everyone is busy getting in some miles! I've done a couple runs and some core since my 10K on saturday, and got my new shoes yesterday. I had planned on a long wog today, but after only 2.5 miles, I had to pack it in. My shins HURT, even with mostly walking!! OMG. So I am putting myself on rest from running for a few days. My 1/2 is next weekend, so another long run at this point won't make that much of a difference. I have a good base and am trying to have faith in that.

not for sure how to get to the spread sheet so far for febuary I have in 59.09 miles running in 9.48 . I just want to thank everyone for their support on the loss of my dad. I am now starting to feel some better although I will always miss him.

I meant to say thank you for your prayers and support while I was dealing with the loss of my dad.

Hey Warriors,
Sorry I have been out of the loop for a couple of days. I had a few good runs last week capped off by a nice 8 miler on Sunday morning. As far as my reporting of weight goes I am down 3 more to 250 (13 total so far). I am dealing with some type of thigh issue though. I hope it was just a cramp that is taking some time to work itself out but I will keep you informed. Good running to all.

Ken- that thigh issue? It's from the voodoo doll pins from those of us who can't drop the pounds. ;) Really, I am soooo impressed with your 13 pounds!:cool1:

Roxy- thanks for the weather advice. I totally think you are right about the not warming up enough in 10k thing. I'd rather be a little hot for the last mile than freezing for all of them! By the way, I grew up in San Angelo so I know exactly what you are talking about with the crazy weather!

Amy- I hope you get to feeling better. You're smart to rely on the miles you've already done rather than hurt yourself. You'll be all perky for your half!

MiaBanda- look at you go, girl, taking on the rain! What a warrior.:)

Hey, quick fly by for me after a busy couple of days celebrating DMum turning 50!!!! (oh and eating lots of chocolates that we made  )

Anyway, ran 3.6miles this morning (30mins plus 10 stretch) then went for a 3 mile forest walk with DMum in 50 mins. Have another walk scheduled tomorrow so hopefully will boost my miles a bit.

Happy middle of the week!

Hi everyone-

Had a rough day today. Got in 2 miles, though. (I believe - I sort of lost track but when I add all my distances together it will be accurate.) - 35 minutes today. Partly a rough day because my mom decided it would be funny to laugh at me and say "well what are you gonna do next? A marathon?" And I said "well I want to do the half next january." To which she then laughed and said "we'll see we'll see."
I did get her back though and said there was no way she would stick to walking on the treadmill for the rest of the year. lol
Oh well. I have all of you to encourage me!

Have a great day Warriors!

Hi All--

Jen--ok, I consider myself the cold weather running guru. Maine is downright COLD and I run outside all winter (coldest run this season was in -9 temps). I am going to assume that you are not too used to running in 30-40 degree temps. Definitely long pants. I AM a cold weather person, and this range means long pants for me, for sure. You are going to need two layers on top. I recommend a long sleeve wicking T and on top of that a light running jacket. If you don't have one/don't know what one is, I will give you some brands or links. Yes to gloves, but you may well ditch them after 2 miles. I jam mine in the pockets of the jacket or tuck them in the back waist band of my pants (sort of in the small of my back, if that makes sense). You will also need an ear warmer. I like these better than a full hat. You will likely get too warm with full head coverage, so an ear band works well. Again, I can give you some links. Good luck! And FYI, I consider 40s to be the BEST temperature for running.

AMY--take care of those shins plints! YEOW! Have I shared my shin splint stretch? Let me know if you need it.

TRACY
--hope you loved that massage!

As for me--the rehab of my hammie continues. But I am really seeing results now, so that is great. Yesterday I did a real run (though on TM). 3.3 miles. The ham felt ok during the run, but hurt like hell for 2 hours after. Back to PT today....LOTS of training. 1:40 minutes worth of working out! Then deep-tissue massage followed by electro-stimulation therapy. The GREAT news is that they cleared me to run...and least conditionally! So, I got in some miles today. Here are my totals for the past 2 days:

Yesterday = 3.3 miles plus upper body strenght; 1 hour total
Today = 10 miles bike, 2.3 miles run, LOTS of strength at PT; 2:40 total

Thanks for all of the support! That tri is coming up fast and I am finally starting to believe that I will be rehabbed for it! :cool1:

No new running to report. I'm calling it "tapering" for a 10k... ;) Except for the part about eating powdered donuts right now, don't know what to call that...

Erika- thanks, cold weather guru! I've only run twice in weather under 45 degrees in 2 years... I actually bought a bunch of cold weather stuff for the predicted temps for January's races so I think I have some stuff that will work. I'll just bring it all with me and decide that morning, but within your guidelines. Glad your hammie's getting better. I haven't experienced that one, but it sounds awful!

Belladisney- My mom means well, but I spent the entire year after signing up for the Goofy listening to her tell me my knees were going to give out... By the last month of my training, she was joining me on her bike for my long runs. She watched me get my medals, and we came back the next year together and finished the half. Don't get down!

Hi Warriors,

I will probably be absent for a week when Delena and I go to NC. I'll be back around next friday! I plan on continuing on with core and some light running starting Monday.

Erika, any stretch suggestions would be helpful!!

Have a Good Week!

AMY--here is the shin splint stretch. Be warned, though, you look like a total dork doing it! So maybe do this when it is just you and Delena...I am sure she will giggle her little head off!

Basically, you walk around the room on your heels with your toes pointed up. This means that your knees are in a locked position. So you really look odd walking around like that. But here is what you want to do...do a warm-up on the bike for 5-10 minutes. Then do the stretch. Then a light run. Then that stretch again. Hope it helps!

Today was a rest day for me. I was going to try and get a swim in, but with the kids off from school, it didn't happen. And NO PAIN today! :cool1: Tomorrow a lot of PT in the morning, followed by a run.

Erika I'm going to steal that shin stretch too, he he. I'm more than happy to look ridiculous, might restrict it to the house tho. Thanks for posting it.

Just got in a bit of a stroll today part way up a baby mountain in Wales. It was like walking into a giant misting machine tho, very fine rain! Anyway another 2 miles to add and about 45 mins (it still managed to be a romantic walk!).

Keep it up guys
