While I was ironing yesterday I watched Trading Spaces and saw the episode where the bedroom was redesigned in what looked like to be a lovely home. The wall treatment was FEATHERS. I couldn't believe it. Beyond the fact that it looked absolutely ridiculous to me, what was the sneeze factor. I have rarely seen a result that I could live with on that show. Where do they get these "designers".

I saw that and kept hoping it was just a joke.

I can't imagine trying to get all of those feathers off in order to fix the wall.

It's not really the designers I worry about. It's the people that sign up for the show and then are disappointed by the results. What were they expecting?

Did you see the one where they glued straw to the walls AND the family had a two year old child? Can you just imagine what that would look like after a couple of days?

Luckily I missed that. Why can't they just decorate in a way that is "normal"?

A major reason I'd never be on one of those shows. I need a little bit more control than that.

I think Trading Spaces is all about ratings now and "how bad they can piss off the home owner". Sad really. I loved it when it first came out.....Doug, Hilde and Vern and the crew tried to please......now everyone just tries to shock.

I used to like this show so much more when it first started. Of course I miss Vern and his reasonable, elegant designs. But even the other designers were designing rooms that were more liveable then. Now, as another poster said, they are all about the shock value.

Hildi has a beautiful home of her own. Has anyone seen the pictures in Architectural Digest featuring some of the rooms in her own place in Paris? I have, and let me be the first to tell you that there is no hay, feathers, records, paint cans, or cardboard "alternative wall treatments" on her walls.

I have also seen some of the rooms Doug designs for paying customers. He has talent. Of course you wouldn't know that from watching many of these TS episodes.

I watch now for a good laugh. If the homeowners get upset, well they should have expected as much. Haven't they watched any previous episodes? You should go into that show with an open mind ~ not caring one way or the other how your room looks in the end. Go on that show if you want some air time and a lot of midnight labor.

I hated the white and orange room Hildi did. Hildi's rooms are the ones I hate. I also didn't like it when she put records on the wall! TACKY :p

I saw that one!!! Awful!!

There was one where they used bowling balls for the coffee table. That show was shot about 4 miles from where I live. The owners HATED it!

I thought the albums on the wall were a cute idea...for a teenagers hang-out room. The owner of that house was a single adult woman, and that was her living room. Very tacky indeed.

Trading Spaces definitely has lost its appeal for me.

Hilde snapped at kids left and right on Trading Spaces Family; I don't think she's a kid-person. In the room with the hay on it, when the couple she was working with objected because the kids would be picking it off the walls, she said they needed to be taught not to. Yeah.

Did you see America's Ugliest Kitchen? I thought, of all people, why have DOUG re-do it. Doug, who painted a huge foot on the living room wall of a woman who hates feet on Trading Spaces. But he did a beautiful job on the kitchen.

I used to live for Saturday nights to see Trading Spaces. However, I've noticed that they keep using the same designers over and over. I know Geneveive has her own show now but Laurie is hardly ever on and it just seems that it is mostly Hildi and Doug. They started the season with the husband of the hubby and wife team that won last year in Florida but what ever happened. He is really creative. I'm really getting bored with the show.
I hope they do something soon. :confused3

Anyone remember when Hildi stapled silk flowers, COVERING the walls of a master bath? Silk flowers + humidity + dust = nightmare.

I've switched over to HGTV and their various decorating shows. At least they're more realistic.

Denise < --- stopped watching TS when Hildi & Doug did their black & white rooms.

Didn't see that episode, but with 10 birds in this house (and this room) I end up with feathers all over the place! Nothing fun or functional about that...

Ewwwwwww, sounds so hideous! I don't like Trading Spaces. I think the final results are just way too over the edge for me. I do, however, like Exteme Home Makeover and watch it every Sunday night.

I started watching the original, British version on BBC America (Changing Rooms) about five years ago and really like it. Not everyone likes their rooms, but at least the designers try to get it right & will change design plans if the HOs insist. There are 2 newer, younger designers in the past 2 yrs that I don't especially care for. They tend to do some odd things, but even they've mellowed this year.

DDIL told me about Trading Spaces a couple years ago & wanted me to watch. The very first episode I saw was Genevieve putting moss on a wall! I thought it was both weird & awful....but not near as bad as the feathers & hay! I've tried off & on to watch, but I just can't get into the American version! I think you're right - they're into shock value & making the HOs angry.

I really disliked the first host (Alex?) - what a pain in the butt! I disliked Hildie & her designs from the beginning, but her attitude was what got to me. The day she told a new designer that she (the newbie) was doing too much work & that's why she always dressed up & wore heels so she wouldn't have to - well, that was the last time I ever watched a show with her in it.

I will say, though, that I always liked Frank's designs. He could have done one of my rooms any time! :teeth:

TS is not the only one doing it. DH and I watched an episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home edition" the other night where one of the children in the family was a big fan of airplanes. They stapled together packages of PEANUTS they got from Southwest Airlines to make curtains! Peanuts! :confused3

Oh well..I guess if the kid gets hungry he can always eat part of his curtains. :rotfl2:
