Also, while in flight, look at the flight attendants. If they appear calm, cool, and collected, then everything is ok. Don't worry unless they appear worried. Also, let them know that you are a first time flyer. That way, if you feel uncomfortable, they can help you calm down.

My aunt, who is a flight attendant, told me the same thing. She said to keep watching them. She also reminded me that the pilot wants to stay in the air just as much as I do.
 
I flew for the first time when we went to WDW last year and I was a nervous wreck. I really hate flying but I forced myself to do it because I was more terrified of getting in a car accident driving almost 24 hours down. That was an absolute no go. I didn't take anything because I don't like taking pills unless it's absolutely necessary so I just kinda threw myself into it. I tried not to think about it too much and just did it.
