What was that building that Daniel was standing in front of at the end of the episode?

That was the arena that the soldier was telling him about. Where they couldn't tell the infected from the uninfected so they locked them all in. So, there are a few thousand walkers trying to get out of those doors.

I walked away last night thinking that I don't like the show. I had liked it pretty much up until yesterday. I just don't like some of the things they did - Travis in the humvee - would that really happen?? the 2 bratty teens destroying the house, it just feels unrealistic to me. Capturing a soldier... seems farfetched. I don't know if I can hang in there.

I am not sure if I liked the episode or not. I have no idea what the guy wants with Nick, he does not seem to have a "marketable" set of skills that the man would be interested in like if he was a wrestler, a sharpshooter, a leader etc. All he showed of himself is a detoxing junkie with a fever. I could not tell when they first showed him if he was truly locked up, or working for the soldiers the way he was talking to the first man and breaking him down. I thought he may be an informant or something.

I did not like the torture, but I guess it had to be done. Now they know the soldiers intend to run off and did he say they would also "humanely kill all the surviving people?"

Not sure what was up with Ophelias mother or what her ramblings were all about?

Oh, I think that guy as a good sense for Nick's useful skills... He's a junkie. Odds are he's got experience lying, cheating, stealing, and above all, manipulating even those people who know him well. That could be very useful in a post-civilization setting. I don't read him as a businessman, as someone suggested up thread. I read him as a hustler, a con artist, someone with a keen sense of how to "work" people and the moral flexibility to take advantage of whatever opportunities may arise in this new world they're moving into.

He did say they would humanely kill those left behind... probably a containment measure set to implement automatically if the military "lost" the city. That's another of those things I've been seeing referred to as anti-government conspiracy but that I find entirely plausible - a decision made by a local/regional leader who may not know the full extent of the outbreak (nationwide, worldwide, etc.) but who is charged with dealing with the L.A. outbreak may well make the decision to sacrifice the few (survivors) in the name of the many (the rest of the state/country/world) if less radical methods fail.

As far as Ophelia's mother, I took her ramblings as a parallel to what her husband was saying to Madison as he tortured the solider... That he wasn't the victim that his daughter thought he was, that he was among those carrying out atrocities in their native country, and that the wife harbored some guilt over loving him despite knowing him for who/what he was.

I liked the choice of phrase, was it humanely terminate, or something like that? I laughed, as those two words are a major oxymoron.

I don't think that guy was a businessman. He was talking about high rollers and all their flashy stuff and my son said "you mean like you", and that is exactly what I thought of him as well. Funny though, the soldier being bought off by him, too bad those material things won't get him anywhere pretty soon.

Details on the series about the plane...Kinda wish it wasn't being done this way, as my husband and son are watching this show, but not TWD. Oh well, we will find a way to all watch I guess...

The "closer" guy is coming off to me like Randall Flagg ("The Walking Dude") from The Stand. He seems like pure evil. He wants the boy as a means to an end. He's going to be a pretty scary villain. I always thought The Gov was a bit of a bully but not all that smart. This guy can drive people mad just with his words..

Overall, I like the series. Keeps me in suspense the entire time. I can't relate to any of the characters... yet. But the same was true with TWD. It took a season before I even cared about any of them.

I felt bad for the poor soldier. He was trying to help Daniel's daughter, he likes her, and this is how her father repays him? He is a corporal, so not like he would have a ton of info for them to get out of him. I am sure that slowing have your arm sliced open is extremely painful, but honestly, Daniel could have done so much worse to him to get info.

The guy with Nick is intriguing and very dangerous. He knows how to control and manipulate people. He wouldn't lose one second of sleep if Nick died. For him, he will just use him to his own advantage and then disregard him when he is of no more use. I think he will be instrumental in getting Nick out of there alive though.

Every episode, I just keep getting more and more ticked at Travis. Could he be anymore of a wimp? I know, we know what is going on and he doesn't, but does he need anymore proof of what is happening out there? Is he expecting his ex-wife and current wife to keep him safe, since they seem to have more huevos then he does?

And clearly they aren't just killing those people; they're taking them to that holding facility where presumably they're trying to learn more about the infection.

I like the show but I was hoping for more info the spread on a worldwide basis before power and communications disappeared entirely. Did this start in CA? Is it happening simultaneously around the world or was LA the epicenter? The news they showed the characters watching was all focused on LA area, unless I missed it. The news on the net that Madison's student was talking about, that prompted him to bring the knife to school, was that local or elsewhere? I thought when the military showed up we might get some insight into aspect of that but nothing really...

I do not believe it started in Ca. The knife kid said it was in 5 states, so I am guessing it's breaking out all over, and I would assume that's what was happening globally as well.

I spent a lot of this episode pacing and in the other room. I can handle all TWD and FTWD zombie stuff, but people torture/nastiness? Nope. I rely on my DH to tell me when that stuff is over, LOL! I felt bad for the guy too, but he DID have a chance to tell everything, and he tried to keep some stuff back, so....I can honestly say I have no idea how I feel about the torture as a whole. Just like in real life, sometimes it's the only way to get what you need.

I have no idea what is going to wake him up. He obviously did NOT have his come to Jesus moment yet. And I agree, what more do you need to have happen to get a clue and wake up? And if I was Madison, I'd be rethinking my choice of mate pretty darn soon. What good is he going to be for you? he's no hunter/gatherer. He's no protector. He's a great capitulator though.

I hope like heck no one opens those doors at the stadium, but you just know someone's gonna do it.

Same here. That's why I said earlier that I don't like this government control story line, out of control military, etc. I really thought from what I read about, and even saw in the first couple episodes, they would spend a lot of time developing how it started, how is spread, what the medical community, CDC, etc. were doing about it. Similar to the movie Contagion I guess, only with some of the grit of the original Walking Dead series.

On top of all that, I really think the casting is bad. Daniel is outstanding, otherwise I really don't like or care about any of the others. Will probably give it another chance next season, I just don't look forward to it that much.

I know that they have stated that they will not be delving into how it started or how it was initially spread so I don't think you'll get what you're looking for. I was hoping for more info on the societal breakdown on global level but if communications are already down then I doubt we'll see that either.

Yep!! Travis was all, "How you like me NOW?!?" It was nice to have the Talking Dead back too. As much as it keeps me up later, it helps me process and makes me laugh.

I actually really like the casting. I think the issue is that a lot of the characters are unlikable which was also the case on TWD until they were better known. The only one who was likable from the get go was Glenn. There is no clear "hero" and no one is all good. i agree. The actor playing Nick is really good. I sort of hate both his character and Madison (for reasons mostly unrelated to the show... so far they're just too much like an addict and his mother I know IRL, which is a credit to the writers and actors but makes the characters particularly hard for me to like) but i can't fault the way he plays it. And the guy who plays Daniel is great.

But you're right, no one was a hero from the start. There's no one you're particularly rooting for, no one who emerges as a likely hero right away. And TWD was the same. It was just a bunch of ordinary, flawed people thrown into a crazy situation and you don't really see what they're made of until later. I think we're just starting to see glimpses of it with the characters in Fear. Travis beating the hell out of the soldier was great, he finally grew a pair! And then at the end with Liza, again you see him starting to wrap his mind around the reality in front of him. (But I can't say I minded that ending... Liza being willing to leave Madison and her kids behind was an unforgivable moment, IMO).

Agreed!!! I like that, but part me thought it felt like an episode of TWD LOL. I did enjoy it and will watch again next season. I was a bit surprised at how quickly it all progressed.
I am very intrigued by Strand and his boat.
Did not see the Liza thing coming.

And LOVED having Talking Dead back also, so missed Chris!!!! Sounds like he is hoping to be able to do it regularly next year. That would be great.

they were from the huge stadium. They released them and used them as a destruction so they could break in and get Nick and Daniels wife.
