My DH wants to fly to Disney in March. I have never been on an airplane and unless I was drugged out of my mind, I don't ever want to get on one. We would be leaving from Grand Rapids, MI. It would be DRASTICALLY faster. It's normally a 24 hour drive down there. How do I get over my fear of flying? I am really scared of everything about it too. From taking off to landing, turbulence and of course: CRASHING! Help! :scared1:

I use to approach flying the same way as you. To tell the truth, I still don't like it very much, but in order to avoid spending half of my vacation driving someplace, the plane is the best way to go.

It actually gets easier for me every time I fly, so that's part of it.

Before you go, get your doctor to prescribe a very mild sedative and take 1 or 2 about 45 minutes before your flight. Trust me, you will be fine, and the quicker you get to Disney (or anyplace you might want to go), the more time you'll get to spend at the parks and having fun!!

Good luck to you!

As Bluto said to Flounder in the movie Animal House, "My advice to you, is to drink heavily".
Honestly, there is probably no real way to get you over this fear unless you just do it. Your fear is totally irrational, but I know that it's probably terrifying. Plain and simple...your plane is not going to crash...it's safer than driving...I'm sure you've heard it all! I've flown at least one a month for the past 7 years for work and believe it or not...never been in a plane crash!!! Not even one! Amazing, right?!?!
As a child, we would fly on all of our vacations, and I truly do not think that my Mom and Dad would risk my life for a family vacation!
Do a little internet research, and you'll see that the odds against something bad happening on your particular flight are unreal.
Otherwise, drugs, drugs, and more drugs!!! It certainly beats wasting 2 days of your Disney vacation on a boring car ride...especially that part through Ohio!! Yeeash!!

Educate yourself. Believe it or not a great place to start would be you local library's children's section. They have some great books and videos/DVDs about the basics of flying and some give you tours of airplanes so you'll know exactly what to expect. I know with me a lot of times when I'm scared of something it's not the actual thing I'm afraid of, it's the fact that I don't like surprises and I want to know *exactly what to expect. As someone else said you can get something from your doctor too if you think you need it. Keep in mind that the pilot wants to get there just as badly, even moreso probably, than you do. I always have to remind my son of that before we board a plane.

I second the Xanax, but why sit up front? Is it smoother up there?

Thanks, Annette

because alot of the anixty for me on flying is the lose of control. when I am up front I do not see all those people, you know....that caulstphobic feeling?
I always sit first class, but this trip ...song put me in row 3. this makes a HUGE difference for me

My dad is afraid of flying. He had to take a prescription medication for his anxiety. He is afraid of heights. A direct flight might be your best bet. Only have to get on 2 planes that way!

Hey there... We fly out of Grand Rapids also and I agree with the above poster and get a nonstop flight. NorthWest runs one nonstop flight to Orlando every Saturday. Just relax and you'll be fine.

I'm also terrified to fly but I refuse to spend half of my trip driving from Maine. I think it is also about a 24 hour drive for us.
So my routine is, Zanax or something like it, lots of deep breathing, and something to take my mind off the actual flight like a portable DVD player or a book. We are flying Song this time so I am hoping that the TV's on the back of the seats will do the trick for my son and I. He's 5 and also nervous to fly and I obviously can't act scared around him.
Another poster had a great tip about taking a direct flight. I couldn't agree more. Especially if you have kids with you!
Anyone with a fear of flying knows its irrational but there is little we can do about it. I personally think its the months and months waiting for the flight that are the worst. Just thinking about it shoots my blood pressure right up. When I actually board the plane I'm not that bad. Maybe its the Zanax!!!! :earsboy:

agree with laugh o grams.....DRINK HEAVILY.
alcohol is a nice sedative. toss back a few and relax the whole way there. I plan on "medicating" my wife with a couple of bourbin and cokes when we fly. :cool1:

I'm afraid to fly also, and will be doing my 1st flight in 5 yrs(I didn't always have a fear) this coming October. In order for us to do a land & sea package we had to fly. No one can assure you that you will be fine (I know people mean well when they say that, but nobody knows for sure). They can only say, most likely you will be fine. I know my chances of getting in a car accident are greater, but I've been in car accidents b4 in I'm still alive. My chances of that happening on a plane are ......
I've had many great flight and only one bad, so I'm going to take the chance.

I hate flying, and don't like heights.. but, I dont mind landing, and I dont mind the actually part of flying, I mainly hate takeoff, even turbulance isnt that bad most of the time.. I also sit in window seat, that keeps me occupied.(except take off, hate take off...grrr). see if you can get on song or jet blue, you can use their tv's that each seat as to busy your mind.
also take bonine for the motion :teacher:

in a word: Xanax

You took the words right out of my mouth. :goodvibes

If that's what it takes to get you on the plane, then that's what it takes. I feel the same way about MRIs, but I do it when I have to. Knowing that flying is safer than driving, and that you'll get there in a fraction of the time, doesn't make the flying part any easier. But sometimes you have to buckle down, and like the Nike commercial says, "Just Do It." good luck. :wizard:

Song or Jet Blue are not available out of Grand Rapids, maybe someday though. My wife used bonine for our first flight a couple years ago and it worked well for her. Unfortunately she won't be able to use it this time because she is pregnant.

Okay, well first of all, I agree with others that you should go to your doctor and get a prescription for xanax. I wouldn't suggest alcohol because it can potentially make you queasy, give you a headache...dehydrate you. I'd to with xanax. And keep in mind that you're best off flying in the evening. You won't be able to see anything and that will make you feel a whole lot better. And after taking a xanax and the stress of your first flight, you'll want to arrive at your hotel and just go to sleep, so don't make any big plans for a morning flight followed by a day in the parks. I also agree with those who say to sit in the front of the plane. It's a lot noisier in the back of the plane and that can be somewhat frightening to first time fliers.

Also, sit with your SO and have him hold your hand and explain every single nuance of the flight. As with most fears, you're mostly afraid of the unknown. Once you know that after taking off the pilot may pull back on the throttle, you're no longer afraid of it. Once you know that upon approach to landing that you'll hear the landing gear come down, you'll know it's okay.

Look around at others on your flight....especially people traveling alone with their laptops open. Those are your business fliers...and they probably fly all the time. Look at their reaction during turbulence. You'll see that they don't even flinch......why? Because it's totally normal and to be expected on some flights. Bring your walkman or Ipod and play some soothing music. You'll be zonked from the xanax...you may actually take a nap! Watch the movie on the flight....that's a great way to take your mind off things.

And to make you feel even better....take a look at these odds....

"Your chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million. On the other hand, your chances of being killed in an automobile accident are 1 in 5000. Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. However, the perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger. Experience shows otherwise considering that over 50,000 people are killed on the highways every year. Media coverage would suggest that such events happen daily. Studies have shown one would have to fly once a day every day for over 15,000 years in order to statistically be involved in an aircraft accident! "

Hope this helps!

Some type of sedative (xanax,ativan,etc...) will definately help. Also bring a cd player and put some music on, or a book on cd as soon as you get in your seat, close your eyes and try to relax.

Here is a site that helped my sister feel a bit more relaxed about flying. She hasn't done it yet...we don't go till December but she feels better about it now.

I agree....this is a fantastic site! I don't like to fly but I much prefer flying than driving long distances. I actually feel safer flying. Besides, I can get to Disney in a few hours vs. 2 days of driving. Much better!!! And so worth it.

If you have never flown before, how do you know you are afraid of it???

Maybe if you tried it, you would enjoy it, as many do! It may appear to be scary, but once you get on board and are on your way, it is lots of fun and relaxing. Get a 3rd seat if you can so you have the entire row and more room. Before you know it, you will be landing at MCO and on your way to LOTS of FUN.
