Fear of flying?

I am not worried about the being up high and the crashing. What I am worried about is the smallness inside and my claustrophobic ways. I have never been on an airplane and this is the part that is worrying me. Has anyone ever had this fear and got over it or know of ways to deal with it? TIA!

Try to sit towards the front of the cabin and you lose the perspective that you are in a small tube. Make sure you get an advance seat assignment and also get an aisle seat so you don't feel cramped in.

Were are you flying from? Perhaps there is an airline that operates a wide body aircraft on your route. That would be much less claustrophobic than a smaller plane.

I am flying out of Indianapolis...I think we got as close to the front as we can..Which now makes a lot of sense about not being in a "hollow" tube. I have the idea of closing my eyes the entire walk onto the airplane and the entire flight..lol..I know it won't work but that was my idea ;)

Definitely no wide bodies flying out of IND. I would still try to fly on the largest plane and definitely avoid regional jets.

Why not buy a cheap sleeping mask at CVS that way you wont have to keep you eyes closed and it will probably help you sleep anyways.

Another good idea!! Thank You!! I am so scared of the space thing. But, I am not going to let it get in my way of going to Disney World! I keep telling myself it is only a 2 hour flight and in a matter of no time I will be in Florida if I can just relax myself for that long. I know you can't have electronics right when you go off but I plan on having my iPod ready and my DS to keep me occupied too if the sleeping thing dont work.

My son has the same problem; he gets stressed and panicked when we fly because of a sense of being closed in a small space. What works WONDERS for him is taking Drammamine; even though it is an air-sickness remedy, it just kind of creates a calm feeling for him -- taking it allows him to sleep (and we are also about a 2 hour flight away from WDW). He takes one tablet about 30 minutes before take-off, and he's fine (not drowsy) when we get there.

If you want to try this, I would recommend finding a time to take it before you go, just to see what it feels like and to find out how sleepy it makes you feel (so that you can adjust your dose and take 1/2 a tablet, if nec., so you are alert when you arrive).

Do NOT ride Mission Space, btw -- it is a very small, tight, enclosed space.

Thank You for that heads up :thumbsup2 I had to have an MRI last year that lasted 30 minutes and they almost had to sedate me I freaked out so bad. So, I will have to try the Dramamine and see what that does for me!
