FDA - Don't eat bagged spinach

Unfortunatly, ANY unwashed produce can carry e-coli. Even melons can have e-coli on the outside, if you do not wash it before you cut into, it the knife can spread it through the whole melon and anything else it cuts before washing.

God, I have two bags of it in my kitchen. BUT, I was going to cook it.

This must actually be due to the bagged spinach used for salads. Because E. Coli is killed with heat. Many people buy the bagged spinach (and salads) and do not wash them. Even if the bag says it has been washed, WASH IT ANYWAY. Yuck.

I heard this on the radio before... of course I had a bag that I had eaten part of raw in the fridge. Key word is HAD! :crazy2:

We had it last weekend...I washed it first. So far no one is sick!

YIKES!!!! Thamks for the heads up on this. I just placed an order today with our produce dist. for my Teachers salad bar. I guess I will call and cancel the spinach!!

I never do what the FDA says, but this time, i could handle it :)

The short amount of time it takes to cook fresh spinach would not be long enough to kill the E.coli if it was there.

My DH saw this on CNN....about 20 minutes AFTER he had eaten his dinner! He made something with the bagged spinach...I told him that if he feels ill at all, we're going to the doctor immediately...

I saw this on the news last night and told DH that is what we were suppose to have instead of a lettuce salad. Publix had NO bags of Spinach for salads yesterday, which I thought was odd. I wonder if they had already pulled them?

I did get some on my chicken wrap from Subway on Monday. I am sure they don't wash it again. :crazy2:

My bagged spinach says triple washed....I still have to wash it again???????

I know the first washing is at the farm just to get rid of the clumps of dirt and bigger bugs... not the best environment for eliminating E coli.

And it seems washing won't help anyway. Just read this:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060915/ap_on_he_me/tainted_spinach

The FDA warned people not to eat bagged spinach and said washing it wouldn't solve the problem because the bacteria is too tightly attached.
"If you wash it, it is not going to get rid of it," said Robert Brackett, director of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Nutrition.

I saw a documentary on PBS once that showed the spinach washed at the farm and then two other time through a high power washer. NO human hands touched the spinach. I always thought that the triple wash was the best so I have bought that and triple wash salad since I saw that. So does this mean we are all going to freak and never eat fresh spinach again? Does it mean the veggie wash product sales will go up? What is the FDA recommending we do. You know you are in trouble when you can get E Coli from meat and veggies.
Anyone know what you are suppossed to do here? :confused3
