FBI..........I'm scared!!!!!

Have you ever been to New Haven? New Haven is not the quaint connecticut you see in the movies! In fact, it is very very very urban.

Tampa is not that close to Orlando either. I was thinking about Tampa as a new city to move as my DH has an office there. We drove from Orlando to Tampa just to say hi to the office type thing (wasn't an interview, just a checking out of the city/place)

We drove to Tampa about four years ago. We passed about four strip bars trying to find this office. In fact, this office was near on the "nicer" gentlemen's clubs. I had an idea in my head that a Southern major city would be pretty, quaint, etc.

I will apologize in advance for any Tampa residents, but Tampa was just like any other major city. I couldn't tell that if it was any other small big city. There was nothing to distinguish it and state that it was in Florida. We were not impressed (again sorry) and stated that we would not continue the process of a transfer. Don't go there thinking you will be close to disney because you won't really be.

I understand the distance, but it's still closer than NJ or DE! Actually, the FBI has a satellite office in Orlando. Besides, we would look outside of Tampa like Sarasota. I really want to go to Tampa because my hubby grandparents live close to there and so do good friends of ours. My neice is in Jacksonville (college), so at least I am within driving distance of her also. Plus, I am attracted to the weather. I HATE the cold, love 100+ weather!!!!! I am a South Jersey beach girl what can I say!!!!

I live in the Albany, NY area. We have family near Morristown, NJ, and it's not a bad drive--maybe 2 1/2 hours.

The winters here are long, but if you like the outdoors, you have the Adirondacks in your back yard.

The cost of living is pretty low compared to most of the cities on your list. You can do a comparison at http://www.bestplaces.net/col/default.aspx

Our town has one of the lowest crime rates in the country and excellent schools. There are school districts around here that are fabulous, and some that are bad news. You can pm me if you want details.

I do realize he can be put in a field office too, but I really want to pick as close as I can to family, and away from the cold (if possible).

I would defineatly be picking a suburban area outside each office ( I am not a city girl by any means), but I am afraid in certain areas that we would have a hard time finding a house that we can afford.

Being from outside Philly, I think it would be hard to saty away from the cold and still be near family.

From where you are in DE, couldnt you just stay put and try for Philly(we have an office Newtown Square PA) or DC or Baltimore. or even VA is not that far from NJ.

Seriously, San Antonio. I'm telling you. Big city, small town feel. HOT weather, super low cost of living, great schools.

Come to Texas. No state income tax here. We do have tax on purchases. It runs about 8.25% in the Dallas area. Traffic can be bad in Dallas, but if you live in the right area, you can avoid a lot of it. I drive 22 miles to work and it takes me about 35 minutes and I travel the dreaded 35/635 route. The Dallas area is also catching up on light rail travel out to the suburbs.

Housing can be very reasonable in most Texas areas. You can purchase a new home from 130,000 and up.

Dallas has 2 airports, DFW and Love Field. One very important point is that you can buy a ticket to Orlando for an average of about $200, depending on when you travel.

And yes, it can get hot in Texas. Having 100 degrees at 10:00 pm(yes night) is not unheard of during the summer months. However, you just take advantage of air conditioning and don't live without it.

Some Texas costs
regular gas-$3.05 a gallon
diesel-$2.74 a gallon
recent electric bill-$117(could be less, but we already run our air conditioning)
natural gas-$29(from a high of about $80 in winter)(you either heat with natural gas or electric in Texas)
my home taxes are about $3000 for a year on a $130,000 home

I am just here to give my condolences!!! DF just left yesterday for his 6 month Federal Academy (hey he is only 4 hrs from WDW though so I am planning plenty of trips). Currently he is assigned Cleveland...so I have been busy trying to find a house or apartment there..we were warned though that by the time he graduates he could be moved to a different offifce based on need Oh what fun....AHHHHHHH
