FBI: al-Qaida rail strikes possible

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24 — In a new message to local law enforcement, the FBI said Thursday that recent intelligence indicates that al-Qaida may next target the U.S. railroad system, as well as continuing attacks on global petroleum interests. “Information from debriefings of al-Qaida detainees as of mid-October indicates the group has considered directly targeting U.S. passenger trains, possibly using operatives who have a Western appearance,” the warning said.

I just heard this on the news this morning. I personally try not to worry about threats like this and I do hope that with the news saying these, if the terrorist really were thinking of doing it that they are deterred from doing it now since "we know" (I think that made sense ) Anyway no matter what, I do hope that nothing comes of this.

I try not to worry either, but since my oldest DS utilizes Amtrak sometimes for transportation back and forth from college, it did give me pause.

And from what I've seen so far, there's virtually no security measures on the train. Hopefully that will change with this warning?

Swell.. The Amtrak Boston to New York line literally goes right through my backyard..

For many, many years I had this reoccurring dream of a train being taken over back there and blown up.. Sure hope it wasn't a premonition!!

Odd, I was going to take the train to Connecticut tomorrow but the website had an error when I was buying my ticket so I got annoyed and decided to take the bus. I'm so glad I did, I would have been so worried tonight otherwise..

My brother in law is a railroad engineer and says they're really trying to watch out for everything. Especially railroad bridges in heavily populated areas. He also said they're concerned about a nuclear plant in Perry, OH. The railroad goes right by it. Scary stuff. Hopefully it's all just hype, but the railroad workers are taking it seriously.

I don't think they came up with any credible link to terrorism, but surely some of you remember the derailment, including toxic chemicals and gasses, that happened recently in Knoxville, TN... There was a big evacuation!

Hhhhmmmm...

Seems these terrorist sometimes try out their ideas on smaller levels before culminating in something like 9/11.
