Favourite Ice Cream Flavour

Strangely enough we're going on a trip to Southern California where we're going to indulge in probably more ice cream than we should. Possibly like the time when I was 8 or 9, and a half gallon of Swensen's blueberry cheesecake ice cream wasn't enough, and I went into another half gallon of something else. Our targets are Mashti Malone's (Persian cucumber and Saffron rosewater) in Hollywood, Wanderlust Creamery (several location), and possibly Hans Homemade at the Anaheim Packing House. And we've never had Salt & Straw so we're thinking of that at Downtown Disney. But this is just a little bit weird.

My 11 year old is looking forward to the Japanese Neapolitan at Wanderlust Creamery.

A trio of Japanese classics. Matcha. Hojicha. Black sesame.

Just got back and I can't say I feel all that well after all that overindulging. The old metabolism isn't quite where it used to be. But the kid really only wanted a scoop of Vietnamese coffee at Hans' Homemade. Didn't want a "drumstick" (they're calling it something like "chocolate drummie" I guess to avoid getting sued by Nestlé). I couldn't deal with anything more after eating poutine but had a taste.

I got to try the classic item at Mashti Malone's, which was a saffron rosewater Mashti's special (between two wafers) with pistachios. My kid got 3 flavors and we skipped lunch after that calorie overload. Later after early dinner we headed off to Wanderlust on 3rd. I got a split (Hurricane Butter Mochi and Hokey Pokey) and my kid got the Japanese Neapolitan.

I mentioned Salt & Straw at Downtown Disney in Anaheim. When we got there, we probably weren't likely to do anything more than ask for samples, but it the line was out the door - maybe 30-40 people. It's kind of strange how so many places have lines out the door like this now.

Social media? - Either places getting way wider publicity than before, or people there to get the prefect photo.

I certainly understand the deal at Downtown Disney on a night when it's in the 80s. But it can ebb and flow. We went for ice cream in this places in Santa Barbara a few weeks ago, and there was zero line and plenty of no stress time to ask for samples and ask questions. Then we had it, went to their upstairs seating area, and came back to a line out the door. But yeah I think there are a lot of people taking photos for Yelp, Instagram, Facebook, etc. and a lot of places encourage it.

I have two fav ice creams, but they are seasonal. In lieu of them, I'll go with chocolate.

Love Potion #31 (Baskin Robbins): White chocolate and raspberry flavored ice creams, finished off with raspberry swirls, chocolate flavor chips and raspberry-filled chocolate flavored hearts.

Trader Joe’s Peanuts for Chocolate! Ice Cream: Chocolate flavor, with swirls of peanut butter and some crushed peanut butter Joe Joe’s

When we're getting ice cream "out" my favorite is banana brownie from a local ice cream shop. It's so, so good and made in house.

For at home, we get haagen daz vanilla icecream. But only a couple times a year, because I'm lactose intolerant and have no business eating ice cream (but sometimes I do anyway, popping lactase pills in between bites).

Peppermint stick.. the pink one, not the green mint chip
That brings back memories! A restaurant near where I went to school made a dessert they called a peppermint snowball and it was that pink ice cream rolled in crushed chocolate cookies with hot fudge and whipped cream. It was sooooo good!

So I don't know if I have a favorite per se. I just like variety and get bored with the same thing over and over.

However, today I decided to take the kiddo to a place called Milkbomb. They seem to have two physical locations - in Berkeley and San Francisco. And it's really odd in that they're only open for a few hours (I think 4:30-9 PM on Saturdays and Sundays).

I wasn't sure what to get though and the server recommended their Milkbomb Sandwich, which is either a donut or bread. filled with ice cream, and then cut in half. They have a bunch of options for the "sandwich" layer including glazed, cinnamon, or sugar, but we chose ube pandesal. But they can do either one or two flavors, and we picked horchata and butter brickle. They've got some unique ones including one made with White Rabbit milk candy from China (but not today). It was a little bit hard to tell what was what since they were both white, but there are other combinations where it's easier to tell.

I'm not sure of these exact flavors but this is in a sugar donut.

I was also talking about my kid's birthday (which is tomorrow) and they even added a single birthday candle and lit it. We're getting something even better tomorrow.

Bluebell made Peaches and Homemade Vanilla. It was my all time fave. They stopped making it this year and I’m heartbroken.
