Favourite holiday haunt has gone downhill!!

Having spent many happy holidays in Cornwall, we loved to visit Newquay with our 3 DD's, but how it has changed. From a family orientated seaside resort with the typical shops you would expect, it now seems to be tailored for youngsters with bar after bar along the High Street I know nowhere remains the same but its such a shame to see a place going downhill, at least in my opinion. Do you have any similar experiences of what used to be a favourite holiday haunt?

Not sure when the last time you visited Newquay was but, certainly, my memory of it is certainly that it was very 'teen' orientated even when I last visited which was some 15 years ago. I dread to think what it might be like now.

yeah - when I was at college 10 years ago when I was 17 it was a very popular place to go , loads of students used to go camping and drinking without parents.

We use to go between 1987 and 1992, there was obviously a lot of teenagers around, but not to the exclusion of other age groups which it seems to be now

I've never been, but it's such a shame to hear that our seaside towns are becoming like this - I always thought it was a place aimed at surfers, not teens

I remember going to Scarborough when I was about 8 on a coach trip with my mum and dad as well as my grandparents - It was sunny, we went to the beach and went to see Orville on stage

When I had the kids - Molly was 2 and Lewis was 6 months - I had the bright idea of going back !!!!! Big mistake - everything I remember was closed or run down.

I can laugh about it now

When i was a teen myself and a group of mates went camping in the area for the reason that it had a reputation for being a party venue

I think it attracts a lot of school leavers' parties. Drunken teenagers I can do without!

What about the best family-friendly place you have been to in this country? I quite like Brixham in Devon.

Newquay has been getting a lot of bad press this week, GMTV have been talking about how its gone downhill recently.

Its nothing new though, odd they have just picked up on it.

Rhyl is another that has gone down hill, while it was never the nicest seaside it was still good place for a day out when staying in North Wales.Last time I went there was needles all over the beach. We go to LLandudno now instead which is still a nice place to visit.

Probably the same reason lots of bars serve alcohol to under-18s. It does happen

I live in Cornwall and am upset at the bad press Newquay has been getting. It is a party place but to be honest it has always been that way. In all fairness it is no different to many other similar places in the UK. In the main part it is still a beautiful place but is very touristy - something which is not down to local people. There are many other beautiful places in Cornwall which are very family orientated, my favourite being Perranporth.

And, personally, I love Falmouth - I spent many a happy day on the river Fal as a child - although I did get very sick once after swallowing a LOT of water while water ski-ing

I live just on the outskirts of Falmouth and have a view across the bay, it truly is a beautiful place to live.... oh dear I sound like a tourist information advert for Cornwall don't I?

Perranporth is where we always stayed and along with Holywell Bay we found the beaches perfect and the area ideal for all ages, we last visited it 3 weeks ago, but I think as an outsider changes are more noticable, I have noticed a much bigger change with Newquay than anywhere else in Cornwall, we used to have family who ran a small cafe on the approach to Tolcarne Beach and at that time it was a successful venture, but with the town aiming at the younger clientelle it began to lose money and has been closed for many years, as I guess was the fate for many other businesses unless it was a bar or night club.

Never been....GMTV have been reporting from there all week. Seems to be tailored for school children as a reward for finishing their exams. How times have changed all I got was a 'well done'.

I love Pembroke in Wales and the surrounding area, been there many times since I was tiny and I enjoy it as much as an adult as I did when I was a kid... Hope to take kids there myself one day

I think Cornwall is a lovely part of the country - my uncle lives in Helston but it's a bit of a drive from the Midlands. I am planning on going to south-west Wales next summer. I was thinking of Tenby but I might check out Pembroke too!
