Favorite Rides

I will be traveling to US/IOA for the first time with my family over Thanksgiving break. My children are 10 and 9 and our whole family loves adventurous rides (haven't found one yet at Disney that they wouldn't ride). What rides are your favorite and do you suggest for us? Any that just may be too scary for the kids?

They will have a great time, Universal has tons of rides for their age group!!

For their ages my do not miss list at IOA would include Forbidden Journey, Jurassic Park, Spiderman and Rip Saw Falls (unless it's chilly). At the Studios MIB, Simpsons and the Mummy (mummy is in the dark but if they can handle space mountain they'll enjoy it).

Really the only rides I would say are questionable would be the major coasters. RRR and Hulk might be out and also Dragon challenge. If they meet the height requirement you might have them watch those rides a few times and see what they think or even ride them once yourself and determine if those are still a little too intense.

Are they Harry Potter fans? If so I bet they will love the flight of the Hippogriff (don't let them blow it off thinking it's just a "little kids ride") it's the best "kiddie" coaster I've been on.

My son was 11 on our trip and his favs were:
IOA: Hulk, Forbidden Journey, Spiderman, Dueling Dragons, Jurassic Park River Adventure
Studios: Rip Ride Rockit, MIB, Simpsons, Disaster (he was chosen to be in it), Mummy

My daughter was 7 and her favs were:
IOA: Spiderman, Flight of the Hippogriff, Cat in the Hat
Universal: Simpsons, MIB, ET, Woody Woodpecker

My son was 12 during our last visit:

He (and we) loved Mummy (top pick), Simpsons, Spiderman, MIB. ET was pretty cool too.

All of the above - I went for the first time as an adult, but had I gone at age 10 I would have done EVERYTHING, assuming I was tall enough to get on.

I love the big coasters, have since I was little, but not everyone does. The tip about watching them a few times first is a good one - see if you think it's something you can handle. I don't know if you've ever been on an inverted coaster, or one that turns you completely upside-down - for some (like me) it makes the ride even more fun; for others, it makes them sick. Many of them have POV videos on youtube if you want an idea of what the ride is like.

A few statistics from the roller coaster database (rcdb.com) that might help you know if you're ready:

Dragon Challenge (steel, inverted):
Drop - 95-115'
Inversions - 5
Max Speed - 55-60 mph
*There are several points on this ride where it seems you will collide with the other coaster. Each track has a different layout. Minimum height to ride is 54"

Incredible Hulk (steel)
Drop - 105'
Inversions - 7
Max Speed - 67 mph
*The tunnel on this ride is really fun. There is a sudden acceleration burst where it feels like you are being shot out of the tunnel. Minimum height to ride is 54"

Rip Ride Rockit (steel)
Max speed - 65 mph
Includes a non-inverting loop
Not sure how long the drop is, but the coaster itself is 167' high.
*You can select your own music, that plays while you are on the ride, which is fun. Minimum height to ride is 51"

Revenge of the Mummy (steel, indoors)
Max speed - 45 mph
No inversions, but you do go forwards and backwards during the ride.
*This one has a "story," the mummy is trying to kill you while you are on the ride. A lot of it is in the dark. Minimum height is 48"

There are also several kid-friendly coasters that are good for people who just want a brief, less intense roller coaster experience.

If you like motion simulator rides, also check out Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and the Simpsons - these were overall my two favorite rides. If you like video games/interactive rides, you will like Men In Black. If you like 3D, Spiderman is fun. If you like being shot up in the air really fast and then dropped, you will also like Dr. Doom. And if it's warm outside, you can cool off on the water rides - I got a little wet on Jurassic Park and Jaws, and completely soaked on Ripsaw Falls.

We were in IOA last week. Though we don't have kids, I bet any kid would love the water rides there. They are so much more thrilling and wet than Disney's. Jurassic Park only gets people in the front row wet, but the drop is significant. We preferred Ripsaw Falls, which has a series of drops and a cool cartoon theme. Everyone gets very wet. Our favorite, however, was the raft ride in the same area, Bilge Rat Barges. It's not a big thrill ride, but compared to Disney's Kali River Rapids it is. Everyone will get SOAKED. Assuming the weather is appropriate, do these three rides last in your day and in this order then head back to your hotel afterward or bring a change of clothes. We were ringing the water out of our socks.

FJ can't be beat either and if they like that, Spiderman would be a hit too.
