Favorite memory at Fort Wilderness

Ok, we see a lot of these kind of threads on the other forums, so I thought I would start one here. What is your favorite memory while at Fort Wilderness? Can be anywhere in Fort Wilderness, at any time, just has to be AT Fort Wilderness.

Personally, my favorite memory was not really a "good" memory, per se. When we were younger, my brother was on the back of a golf cart, and one of our family friends was taking him to wash clothes. He was hanging on to the clothes basket, with his arms wrapped around it. Needless to say, our family friend basically slammed on the gas (as much as that is possible in a golf car), and my brother went flying off the back of the cart.

He wasn't hurt in any serious way, just a couple cuts, but to this day that's one of the memories we talk about the most, it's hilarious to us now, guess that's why!

I'd mentioned this before - but while on the FW wagon ride, for the first time ever, I saw a firefly in Florida (and I've lived here for 22 years). It was funny, because it was while waiting for the fireworks, and exactly when Tink was coming down the wire. And all of a sudden - a firefly right in front of me!

My favorite memory is going to probably sound goofy but the first time DD and I took our camper to FW it was Thanksgiving 04. We rented a golf cart and drove around looking at all the decorated campsites. The goofy part was we were singing "There's a great big, beautiful tomorrow" from the Carousel of Progress. We had been to the MK earlier and that song was STUCK in our heads lol. I knew we would be back for many many more trips and so far we have been.

I think that song gets stuck in everyone's head after getting off that ride. My DW and DM both were rather annoyed after getting off that ride, and the fact that they heard that song for the next 3 hours probably didn't help...lol.

My favorite FW memory was during a trip around 1981-82 (not quite sure of the date, but I think I was around 9 or 10). After a long day in the MK, my family and I came back to FW and watched Old Yeller on an outdoor movie screen they had set up with some bleachers. Nothing very fancy by today's standards, but definitely a magical experience for me.

Making me chose a favorite memory is like making me pick a favorite child! But here it is;

Sometime in the late 70's (might have been '80) we took a boat ride over from the Contemporary to Fort Wilderness. It was night, we wandered around the marina and then made our way over to the campfire singalong area. A movie was playing (couldn't tell you which one) and my brother and sister and I sat there and watched for a bit while our parents went to the store. I remember so clearly sitting there and looking around and feeling the way it felt and being at home there. That was my 1st impression of FW and I camped there for the first time about 19 years later and that feeling still stays with me.

When I think of the fort....I think of the decorations at Christmas time. The artifical apples that hung in the garland at the bus stops. Can anyone tell me if they have seen this recently?

Our favourite thing even though we have never stayed there is to take the kids over for an afternoon and evening at the campfire and to make smores. We used to do the swamp trail (no longer open) and the petting zoo (also apparently no longer open) then we would sit and watch the movie and make smores then take the boat back over to MK and watch Wishes from the boat.

It probably was her in the beginning (it was a mix of us), but she doesn't use it anymore. It's only me now.....muhahahaha

Been reading these forums for a long time, but I was mainly an Intercot person. Intercot got way too restrictive though, talk about a place that won't let you post anything that isn't glowing Disney praise at all! So after being just a reader for the longest time, decided to open an account here.

Like this place A LOT better than Intercot, mainly because you can post pictures, and because people are more free to speak their mind.

Oh, and thanks for the compliment! I think she makes me better looking in the end...lol

It's funny you wrote that, because the part of my post that I deleted said that it looks like you're moving furniture (pictures) and taking over... what have you done with your wife!!

I used to get my Disney music fix from Intercot.

I can recall sitting at the campfire movie back in the mid 90's, when our boys were still quite young (this was back when Daryl was the CM doing the singining). I dont recall the movie, we were watching the stars as much as the movie, it was all so relaxing and peaceful.
The campfire program is our "happy place" just good clean simple corny fun.

Oh my gosh...I thought it was just ME, LOL. I ALWAYS thought it was the woman half of the couple too. For the past 4 months I've thought of Colson as a "her" and then when he wrote about "his wife" I was so confused, lol. I had to go back to check other posts to see if I was crazy.

I think it's because I am the one in my relationship that gets so excited about camping and I am the one who posts on all the message boards. My husband is very direct and to the point in his e-mails. His e-mails would be extremely short and no way would he bother to use the cute little icons

lol, I'm a very expressive person when it comes to stuff I'm excited about, which is probably why I use the icons. My wife tells her friends, just hand him a beer and say something about Disney and he'll be your best friend all night...heh. What you see in my posts is probably exactly how I would be if I was talking to you about Disney in person. I love life, I love the gifts I have been given, and I wake up every morning smiling, and go to bed each night the same. I've been through a lot of bad stuff in the last 10 years, and I came through all of it, and ended up with a beautiful wife and a great life, I can't complain!

I've been on lots of message boards (comes with the kind of work I do), I guess it just comes as second nature. I've had more than one person wonder why I use so many smilies, I don't know, I find that they help get across what facial expressions and body language would in a real conversation.

I literally could spend hours upon hours talking about Disney and the Fort, every little nuance. It is a passion and an obsession quite literally.

Also, most of my posts come while I'm at work during downtime, and I like to write

You sound like a very happy guy. One of my favorite sayings is "stop complaining about what you don't have and appreciate what you do". You sound like someone who does just that

If I lived closer to Disney, I am sure I would be as big of a Disney nut as you are. But I am ALL THEY WAY UP here in Michigan. This will be a 2200 mile trip for us !! My inlaws are hoping to move to FL this year and if they do we will most likely make Easter in FL an annual thing so we can visit them. Not sure if we will stay at FW again or plan something else. I guess it all depends on how this trip goes. We hit the road is less than 48 hours !! :

My favorite saying is "No Worries", and that's exactly how I live my life I love your saying as well, it's so true!

I love being out west in the US (love camping, backpacking, hiking, etc..., all the National Parks), but much like your trip to Disney, it's not a trip I get to make often, just because of the distance involved. Unlike my retired parents who spend 7 months a year working at Glacier National Park in Montana (dad is the head Red Bus Driver during the season, my mom transports hikers to and from Canada), I'm so jealous of them! I hope when I retire just to get a job driving one of the boats on the lakes at Disney, that would be a blast!

That would be great if your inlaws moved close, and an annual trip, can't go wrong with that!

Glad to see I'm not the only male Disney nut on here. My wife thinks I must be having an affair with someone on here...lol. As far as my favorite memory, I'd have to say it's one that my daughter wouldn't much like but here goes. Last year while at FW, we would end the night by going swimming. Since we were in the 2000 loop, a little walk through the woods if you will, I used to tease my 15 year old daughter to watch out for alligators. It was night and we would walk over a waterway and you couldn't see very well. Well coming back one night quite late, she heard something make noise behind her and she took off running. She caught her foot on something and fell down. She did hurt her ankle enough to make her stay sitting for a couple of days. But it was just so funny that she had freaked out thinking there was an alligator about to eat her. When she was sitting on the ground, near the waterway, I was telling her she might want to get up and move along if she really thought there was an alligator looking her over for a tasty meal. Everyone else thought it was hilarious but she wasn't too happy about it. Something we'll always remember anyway.

I have the cutest picture of my two younger kids...my son was about 4 and his sister all of 7 in rain gear at FW..they have on the yellow mickey ponchos..and it didn't matter they were drenched..standing near Pioneer Hall. My daughter with her arm around her younger brother. Huge grins from ear to ear. The sheer look of joy on their faces...it would melt your heart. In my minds eye..that's what they look like to me all the time. But the years have passed and my baby girl is going to be 20 on Thursday. Excuse..I have to get a tissue now.
