favorite doughnut??

Certainly in much of California it's mom and pop shops. For some reason a lot of the operators are Cambodian immigrants and their families, as well as many Chinese immigrant families.

There are some fancy donut shops selling $3-4 items. The one place in San Francisco that's legendary is Bob's Donuts. They're not particularly fancy and they used to be cheaper (no more discounted price for a dozen). Nothing really fancy. A dozen will come in a pink box. When I looked at the fryer, they had stacked boxes of commercial food service brand shortening. But it's really, really good.

BTW - how do you spell it?

Wawa’s doughnuts aren’t bad but I love Chester’s Bakery. Dunkin’ Donuts I could take or leave. They were better when they were made in house back in the day.

Same with Tim Hortons (Canadian here). It used to be a good donut shop decades ago. Now it is all shipped in frozen and it doesn't even smell like a donut shop. I no longer even go there.

Anything that's not filled, I can't stand jelly or creme filled donuts. Ugh.

I also like mine room temp or even slightly chilled. Warm is just weird, IMO.

Vanilla cake donut with white frosting and sprinkles. After that is maple bar and apple fritter.

However, there isn't any type of (standard) donut that I won't eat.

Boston Cream normally, but my favorite are the Paczki for Mardi Gras. Unfortunately I can only get those once a year, so I make due with the Boston Cream.

I love Krispy Kreme , chocolate and filled with the white cream
The one I miss the most is the Hostess powdered and filled with raspberry

The thing I don’t like about Krispy Kreme is the way they put chocolate (and other) covering on an already glazed donut instead of a plain one. It makes it way too sweet for me.

Where we live the best donut shops are owned and staffed by Asian immigrant families. They blow Dunkin out of the water. The owners make some really creatively decorated such as a panda one where the ears are made by mini Oreos cut in half or rainbow ones with the rainbows made from candy and the clouds made from mini marshmallows. It's a big treat to visit during holiday seasons to see the seasonal donuts. Our favorite one offers donut "cakes." They spell out a phrase in individual donuts and place them in a giant box. I surprised my older son with one at school when he turned 10. It said "Happy 10th birthday _____" and all of the donuts were decorated with Minecraft and Star Wars motifs.

My favorite thing to get at local donut shops though is sausage rolls. It's a Texas tradition that evolved from traditional Czech klobasneks (sausage kolaches). They are amazing and the donut shops have gotten creative with them. You can get ones with jalapenos and/or bacon plus they offer them wrapped in croissants instead of the regular dough.

lemon filled, french crullers, and buttermilk old-fashioned bars

That is about the only thing I miss about living down there.

When I lived there it was a great place to live. I have only happy memories (other than my parents divorcing and moving us away...)

When I went back, I was surprised how dumpy it was. (Sorry to anyone in Tustin...😬) Either it has really changed since the 70’s/ early 80’s or my perceptions as a kid were skewed!
