How exactly do fastpasses work? Are they a must have when you have a small child?

edited: sorry i meant fastpass not funpass

I don't think I have heard of anything called a funpass at Disney.

If it's your birthday (or the birthday of your child 4* or above) and you already have tickets for 2 or more days, you can get a Birthday Fun Card which is like a gift card, good at many of the gift shops but not at restaurants or food stands. Guests with "child" tickets get a card worth about $68; guests with "adult" tickets get a card worth about $75.

* Children turning 3 in the middle of your/their vacation continue to be admitted free as infants (ages 0-2) and do not qualify for the free birthday admission or alternative gifts.

1. Go to the ride where fastpasses are utilized.
2. Near the entrance are kiosk machines and also an overhead sign telling you when to come back and ride using the fastpass you would get.
3. If you wish to come back at that time for a shorter wait in line instead of wait in line now, then insert your park ticket into one of the machines and receive the fastpass. Each family member must have his own ticket inserted and his own fastpass received.
4. Retrieve your park ticket from the machine. Insert only one ticket at a time and count the tickets when done if you were sent to get fastpasses for the whole family.
5. At the time printed on the fastpass (same time as shown above the machines or perhaps a few minutes later) come back and go into the fastpass entrance where the waiting time should not be more than ten minutes.
6. Children who are too young to need admission tickets do not get fastpasses but still accompany their parents. Except that children not tall enough must have a parent hold them aside (exact waiting place varies) while the rest of the family rides. Family member who stayed behind with the child may ride when the other family members come off the ride.

If you choose not to get and use fastpasses for this ride, a family member who stays behind with a child not tall enough to ride still gets to ride almost as soon as the rest of the famly gets off the ride. Again, the whole family goes through the line until you reach the CM whom you tell that that you are doing a "child swap".

thanks for the replies. I didnt realize at first that it wasnt something you had to add to your ticket. I guess we'll use it if we need it and not if we dont.
