yes, you can trade if it is sooner. You get the current fastpass out of the machine, so it is only what is available if you could get a fastpass with your ticket. (the cm can print them out without a ticket) Or, even if it is the same time frame, but you know you would like that attraction better than the one you have. Or if you just change your mind.

I'm so sorry...my mind is kind of slow today. Let's say I got a FP at Buzz ride. It says I have to wait 3 hours. BUT..I don't want to wait 3 hours so I can go to another attraction/ride and ask the CM by the FP dist to exchange my FP for Peter Pan ride...that is if the time of the FP is sooner at the PP than at the Buzz ride? Oh...am I making some sense here? Please let me know if I am wrong. Thanks so much!

yep, that's the way it worked for us at Mission Space and test track. the cm took my FP, tore them up, and gave me new FP for Mission Space.

The first thing to do is look at the board that has wait times for rides. No sense getting a FP for a ride with a 15 minute line. Grab a FP for the 30+ minute rides.

Where is this board? Is there a central one that lists all ride times? I've only seen the individual times by each ride.

Most are in the front as you enter the park, although MK's might be at the end of Main St. MGM's is at the end of the street of stores - you will walk right into it.

I believe SoCalKDG was talking about the boards that have the wait time listed at each attraction. Out in front of each attraction is a sign that says how long the wait is. If it is 15-20 minute wait, DON'T get a fastpass.

Also pay close attention attraction's fastpass machines that tell you when the return time will be ( if you have to, ask someone who just got one or the CM). If you don't want to wait for 3 more hours, move on to another ride, DON"T get the fastpass and you won't have to trade.

All the Parks have a board showing the current wait times for the most popular attractions.

MK: End of Main St. before the hub
AK: After crossing the bridge onto Discovery Island
Ep: In the Plaza between Innoventions E & W
MGM: Entrance to Sunset Blvd.

Each Fastpass location has a sign near Fastpass distribution that has the Fastpass Return Time Window. Look at the posted wait time for that attraction and then look at the Fastpass Return Time on that sign and decide if you want to wait in the standby line or get a Fastpass and wait elsewhere.

Ah! That's what I was doing wrong! Not paying attention to the return time board. And...that's why I had to wait 3 HOURS for Buzz! And I could have avoided that. I will pay close attention next time. And also...NOT to get FP when the wait is only 20-25 minutes. And get another FP first before using riding using your current FP. Am I making sense here? Thank goodness for this thread! Though I have been to WDW many times, I just never really fully understood the best way to use them. Thank you all!!
