fastpass etiquette

I thought honouring FP after window has passes was at the discretion of the CM at the FP attraction at the time and not mandatory either way to accept or reject

On another thread InstImpres noted that it appears that FP for live shows are not accepted after the window

we just got back saturday, we were there from the 22 to the 29th and we noticed this also, especially at buzz lightyear. also, how many times did you see someone try to go ahead and enter and cm really had to be forceful. i think sometimes it is just a general lack of manners overall. i am sometimes amazed at the rudeness and unthoughtfulness of some guests, my biggest complaint is getting a good seat for my kids at parade time, sometimes an hour in advance, and then having someone at the last minute attempt to block their view. as i said i think it is a symtom of the general decline of manners and etiquette in our society as a whole.

Sometimes the problem is caused by inconsistent application of the rules... I have been early for a fast pass time (less than 5 mins) and have been let in with no problem. The only FP line where the CM did not let people through early was BTMRR. If a guest can get in early at another FP line why not at all of them?

I am a big one for "following the rules". Don't ever try to play a board game with me and fudge the rules.... I hate that! So it drives me crazy when people don't follow the rules for things like the FP!! I would never try to line up in the FP line unless I had a valid FP. It is hard for me to imagine that so many people out there are "rule breakers". And I agree with the poster who mentioned about the parades. You plop your behind on the hard/hot asphalt to secure your parade spot 1 hr in advance, and 5 minutes before the parade starts a family of 5, all who are 6'3" come and stand in front of you and your petite 6 year old!! Makes you want to forget the Disney Magic and go a little nuts on them!! And while I love Disney and truly believe that most of the CMs are trying their hardest, sometimes the lack of consistency with the rules is a bit hard to take. When we were trying to secure last minute spots for SpectroMagic, we were told repeatedly that the "open" spots we saw and were trying to get to were "off-limits" by the CMs. We finally ended up with a kid on each of our shoulders (tough with the 6 year old!) so that they could see the parade.... but at the last minute many people came and stood in those "off-limit" spots and were never told to leave!! REALLY FRUSTRATING! Oh well.... live and learn!!

I don't understand the standing around waiting for the time either. To me if you do this your completely taking away the positives of having a FP. The purpose is to be able to do other things during your wait time. If you are arriving 20 minutes ahead of time to wait, you might as well had gone in the regular line.

Since we're discussing rudeness here, may I ask how you all would have handled a situation we had in August? It was about 5 minutes before the MK afternoon parade started. There was a spot open, so we stood there. Another woman followed us in, pushed in beside us. A CM told her she couldn't stand there. She moved back a little bit, but not too far. She had her dd with her also. One of the paradef CM's caught my dd's eye, drew a picture and walked over to hand it to her. It was about 6" away when the other dd lunged in front of my dd and grabbed it almost out of her hand!!! We were in total shock. At that point the other mother and dd, with picture in hand, walked away, quite rapidly. We did nothing other than try to explain to dd about other people's rudeness and that maybe that little girl needed it more than she did. ( like that would be an excuse!!) Anyway, any suggestions on how to handle such out and out rudeness?? And I promise not to get to the FP line too early. In fact, from now on, instead of sitting on a bench and waiting patiently, I will go have that ice cream bar!!!! And then return 15 minutes into my time frame.

 What a thread! ;) Well, I was in WDW two weeks ago, and twice went to the FP gate just before our time! However, I was polite, stood out of the way, and didn't try to get through the gate before my time. On the 2nd one, the CM let us through a couple of minute early.

Oh, and the only reason we did go a little early was because my kids were ready to go back to the hotel, we were there and had done everything else! :D

Oh, and Goofy4Tink, I'm so sorry your daughter had to be treated like that! Sometimes the rudeness of people amazes me, but when it's done to a child, it's reprehensible! :(

That just boils my blood to think about it. I'm a nice gentle southern girl but I would have chased her down and embarrassed the he** out of her right there in public. I don't have much tolerance for that sort of thing. Especially when my kid is envolved. I am the sweetest girl in the world until you mess with my baby. Uh, uh, nope, ain't gonna stand for it!

Now that I got that off my chest....are FPs usually on the hour? Say 3 to 4 p.m. Is is easier to come at an odd time like 20 after the hour?

Yes, I was going to suggest this. We aim for getting to the fastpass entrance 10-20 minutes AFTER we're allowed to go in.
We've rarely had a pile up at the entrance but we've seen them.......and yeah, I can see how they'd be difficult to get around sometimes! LOL

No, Fast Passes aren't on the hour. I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, the windows are staggered by 10 minutes.

As for the people milling around the Fast Pass Entrance, my wife points out that these are probably the same people who block the airplane boarding gate waiting for their row to be called. People, you have an assigned seat (unless you're on Southwest) there is no reason for you to approach the gate before your row is called.

As for those people who give dirty looks to those of you who are exercising you right to 'push' past and enter the Fast Pass line during your time, it just reminds me of the time when we used Fast Pass when it was relatively new and no one either knew about it or took the time to understand it. Space Mountain had an hour wait stand by, Fast Pass was a 20 minute wait until the boarding window, no brainer right!?! Well when my wife and I walked past ever one standing in the stand by line, I couldn't believe some of the underbreath comments we received. All I could do was smile and think that I hope it takes awhile before people catch on.

OK, ProfGoofy, I will bite - what is the significance of the empty lot?

thanks

We have only gone at Easter and I have never seen this problem but then again we leave the parks by 1pm so maybe we don't see the worst.

We have noticed it also at BuzzLightyear. I wonder why it happens there so much? I just try to get as close to the entrance of the FP line and wave my FP at the CM. He then asks the people waiting to move aside and let people through.

I have never encountered this problem. I agree with all of you that it doesn't make sense to get a fastpass and then stand around waiting for it.

How can you differentiate people standing in line waiting for the fastpass time from a fastpass line of people who are all there during their valid return time? I wouldn't want to just shove my way past people who are there during their valid return time. [Please pardon my ignorance...I've never been during busy season before!]

There is no advantage in deliberately planning to come say 15 to 30 minutes after your window starts. Every five minutes the window starts for another group of fastpasses.

Look past the CM who checks fastpasses. If there is empty space further down the fastpass queueing area and nobody trickling down it, you know everyone bunched up in front is waiting for their fastpass to mature.

Disney hints:

As the parade starts and you are lined up at the curb in the correct and proper place, it is not your duty to please move back.
