Fast Pass - last times for day?

Do they give FP times up to closing?

I was told (at Test Track at Epcot) that the fastpasses are sold out when the come back time reaches half an hour before closing. "The guest has a half hour window to use the fast pass" I saw the machines still issuing fast passes for use 50 minutes before closing but was not patient to keep watching. When I returned about 20 minutes later the machines were covered.

I am not sure whether the machines automatically shut off, or whether a CM goes over, approximates the time, and manually shuts them off.
