FAQ about the Disney Dining Plan

We did this on our last trip. We checked in late on Tuesday night, so that was just a room ressie. Then I did a 4-night ressie with the dining plan. My next trip will be 3 back-to-back ressies, LOL.

If we want to stay 7 nights and go home very early on the 8th day, can we purchase a 6 night/7 day MYW package with dining plan, then add an extra hotel night without dining? The 6 nights of dining will be more than enough for our family (2 adults+12DS+10DS).

Many people tack a room only onto the beginning or end of their packages for different reasons, so I don't see why you can't.
You always run the risk of having to switch rooms, though it sounds like they try to accomodate you. Usually you do have to switch keys.

I was all set on the dining plan until now. We have a room only reservation with the AAA discount. We hadn't planned on making it a package when we made the ressie. I didn't even know about the dining plan when I made the ressie honestly  I want to make it a package so we can get the dining plan and add on our park tickets. Can a room only ressie be made into a package? The problem is that I just read somewhere that you can't get the AAA room discount if you add on the dining plan unless you book a package directly through AAA, is this correct? If so we will have to pass on the dining plan, it would be cheaper not to do that if it means we'll lose our AAA discount.

Yes, you can switch over to a package. Yes, you have to book an AAA package directly thru AAA...BUT, that doesn't mean you will lose your discounted room. You will still get the AAA discount on your room rate. Plus you will get a few extras like the AAA diamond parking pass & the diamond card that gets you discounts at certain places at Disney & DTD.

this happened to me last year.

i had the room only with the AAA discount.

when the dining program came out, i wanted it.

i called AAA and disney about it.

both places told me i could switch to the package as room only does not qualify for the dining without it.

you can NOT keep the discounted room with the AAA code if you have the package. it is one or the other.

i switched and lost the AAA room discount. you have to pack the full room rate in this deal.
both aaa and disney told me no other way around it.

unless it has changed in the last 3 months, this is how it went for me and others.

Maybe things have changed, I don't know.

I booked my package thru AAA. I checked a package at disneyworld.com and AAA was cheaper by around $200. (Compared EXACT same packages)

It was someone on these boards that told me I could book the package thru AAA so that I could still receive the discount on the rooom portion. When I checked prices it rang true.

Just thought of something. Are you refering to when the FREE dining promotion came out? It is my understanding that for that promotion you DID have to give up your AAA discount because the free dining was the special rate/code (whatever you want to call it) and you can't stack specials/discounts. For the free dining you had to book at rack rate for the room.

Otherwise, I am certain that you do get a discount on the room portion of a package when booking thru AAA.

yes, that is what i did.
i booked the room with AAA march 2005.

i switched and did the package in june 2005.

went oct. 2005 to disney. had called weeks prior and no changes, no discounts due to free dining program.

i just called my AAA last week and disney for the room only for this coming fall. both prices were the same. maybe it was the timing of it all.

when i called disney they switched me to a cm that only handles AAA bookings. the info she gave me was the same as the ta.

do you know if AAA gets special packages based on the location of the guest making them?

i don't think the free dining was all that saving for me last trip.
due to switching and losing my aaa discount, i paid almost $275 more.
i ended up eating more which is not my normal way. i won't be going that route next trip. i am more of a light eater and not used to 2 big meals a day. meaning addding appet and dessert daily.

I'm undecided, I do want to try out the dining plan but if I lose my AAA discount then it won't be worth it. The discount took $160 off our room. On our last trip we ate mostly counter service 2 times a day and snacked here and there, we probably ate table service about 4 times total. I'm trying to weigh if the dining plan would work for us or if it would just be more cost effective to pay out of pocket. I do like the convenience of not having to worry about how much things cost and I like that the tips and tax are included, the dining plan is SO appealing in those aspects.

I'm thinking of putting in a call to my aaa office sometime today to see what they say regarding keeping the room discount but switching to a package. Will we actually keep our current ressie but they would just change it into a package or do they cancel our current room only and make a new package? What if there's no availability at the resort to be able make a new ressie? Is it a hassle to change it into a package? Meaning will I get there to find that our original room only res is still on our account and not a package? Sorry for the ?'s this will be our first time on-site :)

Ok...that makes sense. Free dining was your discount, so AAA didn't apply.

I don't think it matters where you are from in booking thru AAA.

Pretty sure you got the same quotes because Disney gave you the AAA discount directly because it is room-only. So the prices would match. Price out your room without the AAA discount by going to disneyworld.com and you should see some difference.

As far as the dining, it's not economical for everyone. For us, it is well worth it. The dining is DH's "vacation." He wants to be able to eat really well EVERY day. He doesn't really care about the rides etc. Give him prime rib & lobster!

You won't lose your room discount. You don't get a discount on the dining plan or your tickets, but the room will be at a disounted rate.

I am not sure if they cancel the original booking and rebook a package. My gut feeling is that, yes, they do. So, there is probably a slight chance that there won't be availablity.

My suggestion is to call AAA. Have them get you a quote for the package BEFORE you cancel your room-only ressie. That way, if there is no availablity, you can stick with your original ressie. I don't really forsee any problems though, unless you are traveling during a very busy time.

this is how i figure it out for me on what is best.
i am staying at all stars which has a higher tax so that $37.99 comes to $41 approximately.

i only do about 4 ts in the 10 day stay. cp (21.22) garden grill (21.50)
scifi ((20) and concourse steak house (31) . on the days i do those dinners, i do breakfast at the food court which runs me a tad under $7 each time. i have the refillable mug so no beverage cost involved.

the rest of the time, i do counter service. hot dogs, burgers, chicken, salads which for the meal and drink would be 8.50 tops.

when i am at AK, i do tusker house and flame tree which is usually about 10.50 for lunch
at epcot, tangerine cafe runs me just about $9 for lunch, san angel cantino plate is with beverage close to $9.25

with what i eat and the figures above, i do not eat close to $41 a day.
see what i mean?
i do a grocery stop on the way to the resort and pick up bottled water and some snacks. not much but just the things i like to munch on. spending about $10 in all.

look at the menus and see what appeals to you for the sit down resturants and write down their prices. also check out the counter services menus.

add up the prices and see what figure you come up with.

if you are going to hit $40/41 a day per person every day, then go with the dining plan. if you total the entire stay's cost of food, for all in your group, you will see if this dining program is to your advantage. the dining plan does include tip and tax but i listed the tax in my figures above for what i eat.

you do get a snack a day on the program. mickey bars are 2.50, water and soda close to that amount.
i get a mickey bar a few times in my stay but just get a cup of water from the cs free when i need one.
my snack expenses are not that much. the snacks i do like were not included in the dining plan. i like mrs. potts sundaes too much !! lol

i did the program in october and made the adrs in advance. then i planned my itenary for park days around the table service meals.
this wasn't bad at all, just had to plan in advance to be at certain parks on times/dates.
the problem i had was it was so time consuming. sit down dinners/lunches can cut an hour into your day each time. at 3 places, le cellier, CRT and marrekesh, my total time there was 1 hour 20 minutes. they both were very busy the time i went. had more of a wait to be seated.

and, i overate........some places had larger portions of food, more than what i was used to. appetizers, entree, dessert. then after eating, i moved a tad slower than when i did when i started out in the morning.........lol

for me, time was important. it wasn't my thing to spend that much time for the ts.....wait time to be seated, order, served, etc.

you should do what is best for you and your family. it is a great thing to try many new resturants that you never have been to before and order anything you want and not worry about the bill. that was one of the things that swayed me to it on my last trip. now that i have done it, i realize that i normally don't eat that much and prefer having the flexibility to eat when i am hungry not when i have to be somewhere for an adr.

i will make adrs for ts on my next trip, but they will not be for everyday.

the advice d4est gave you is very valid.

do not cancel your present ressies without first booking a new one.

only so many AAA discounts for rooms are available per hotel.
if you cancel and then rebook, that discounted room is lost to you.

and if you could not get another discount that pleases you, you will regret it.

do as d4est recommends, make the calls , get the info and then make the decision. but, make the new ressie and confirm it, then cancel the other.

you will get a refund on the first ressie of room only if you cancel.
a new deposit you will have to make when you rebook.

for some reason, disney can't transfer the room only aaa deposit to another program. i had $1000 down on mine and that is what happened to me.
refund on the first and new deposit on the 2nd one.

I booked an AAA package with dining and saved around 250.00 of the price quoted by Disney. We are staying at POR for 7 nights. I never checked just the room rate as I wanted everything including food paid for when we went.

I also got the park hopper plus discount added onto my package when they came out with the code for that. So AAA did save me money with a package deal.

Can anyone tell me if when you order a kids meal and it comes with applesauce or fruit do they also get a dessert? I figured if it came with a drink they wouldnt get another drink but would they still get dessert? Thanks for any info.

one more quick question...when you cancelled your room only ressie how long did it take to get your refund? Did they credit your cc that same day or is there a waiting period?

Thank you everyone for your help! I'm going to talk to DH about making it a package and then calling AAA to get more details and find out of the room discount would still apply then we'll make our decision. I hope I wasn't too much of a pain in the butt! :)

It was honestly too much food! I never thought I would complain about getting too much for my money.

The counter service meals were just about right for us. An entree, a desert and a drink.

The sit down was way too much. My husband and I are considered large eaters and we just couldn't finish all the food we would get.

Anyway, we saved a ton of money using this plan. Woot!

if when you order a kids meal and it comes with applesauce or fruit do they also get a dessert

Yes, they also get a desert. :flower:

Thank you redbaybound. I was thinking it seemed like a lot of food. I'm trying to figure out if it will be good for our family. My boys are only 5 and 6 and they really dont eat that much. They most likely woudn't eat the desserts they would get at the counter services, but it seems like a good deal for the character meals and table service seeing it includes tax & tip.

last year it took one billing cycle,
the year before, it took 2 billing cycles for me.

my cc cut off point is the 18th of each month.
disney told me they need 4 days to put the refund request thru.
last year i made my changes on the 2nd so i had no long waits for it.
