Fantasyland & Avatar "blown" / compared to WWOHP (Really)? + Star Wars Land thoughts

that's just it...starr tours is the fourth most popular ride (theme park insider) and when it opened back up a couple of years ago by the after noon it was a 25 min wait...so hear you have a great ip with a solid to decent ride with very little wait.....the ride matters the most

100%

I think you're really discounting the other way attractions are successful. You're exactly right that should be the mindset, but it's not. Do you think that The Frozen Ride is going to be the best ride ever? I doubt it. Will it probably be one of the most popular rides at WDW? Definitely.

The people's preconceived notions about IP can lead to immediate dislike or passionate love for attractions. Toy Story Mania is hugely popular. Something tells me that the digital rehash of buzz lightyear space ranger spin is greatly more popular due to its association to Toy Story. I'm sometimes guilty of this. Do I like Star Tours more a lot more then I would've if I had never seen Star Wars? Yes. I should be judging it solely on quality, but I don't. I can compare that to my general disinterest in MJ which has led to me to never see EO.

One other thing about IP that I've noticed. When I come out of an original attraction like Small World I'm left thinking about how much I love DL/WDW. When I came out of RSR, I was left thinking about how much more I liked Cars. These attractions don't breed loyalty to the Parks. They create loyalty to Brands. No one can replicate POTC or HM because Disney has a monopoly on those stories and they're timeless. With IP given enough years for new IP to grow other competitors can get their own IP stock piles. (HP as an example) Disney may not be lucky everytime in getting their content. With less loyalty to the Parks combined with the risk of letting a competitor get the next big thing it means they're walking on ice.

That's the blessing and the curse of basing an attraction on an existing IP. Opinions have already been formed about the land with very little knowledge of what it's going to be like. Avatarland/Pandora could be the greatest theme park area to ever be created and there would be people that would never know it because they've already decided it's the worst thing ever. When they were building Expedition Everest, nobody said "Tibet is irrelevant. No one is going to care about this ride."

I think the notable exception there is that Tibet actually exists but still isn't expected to draw a fan base. No one is duplicating Tibet thinking hey let's draw all the Tibet fans. That is the thought process behind Avatar.

Pandora could be fantastic, it could suck. I will reserve judgement until I see a finished product. The new fantasyland is a disappointment and that swill that they serve at Gastons tavern is cruel mockery of butterbeer.
