For those considering resale or direct, I wanted to share my recent (third total) resale experience which went fantastic, and I even have an earlier than expected trip planned!

*The following isn’t to say everyone’s experience will be the same, it simply brings balance to the often negative posts about resale.

We bought SSR in April for SAP, primarily at Aulani, and snagged the UY we wanted with full 2020 points banked into 2021.

We paid $116 a point when direct was $165, a savings of $12,250 on our 250 points.

We had our points loaded and ready to use in about three months, could have been a tad faster, but the sellers had to wait on a planned trip.

At the 7 month mark we booked a trip to Aulani for my wife’s birthday, AND just the other night was able to book a studio for a week at Aulani in September that we already had off of work…Hawaii beats our planned staycation!

From a smooth purchasing process primarily with DocuSign, to having our points available fairly quickly, AND a big savings over direct, we are quite happy with our purchase.

And the bonus is SSR has actually increased in value, which we certainly don’t plan for, but the guaranteed price advantage with resale certainly helps if/when you sell at a later date.

Again, this doesn’t mean resale is for everyone, just wanted to share one person’s great experience with it.

Sounds like a good experience, but there can be hitches along the way too, which you’ll probably discover sooner or later. Sellers returning docs late, or never. Names being misspelled on paperwork. Inaccurate point numbers. Weird delays with Disney, resulting in escalating anxiety. Resale can be a good deal, but there is a substantial extra price in time and worry. I look at that as a hidden but not insubstantial cost.

You’ll also find that the shine might come off those SAP points when you can’t get into the resort you want at 7 months. That said, they are great for Aulani, which we book at both 11 months with direct and 7 months with some of our CCV.

Currently for some resorts, the direct price isn’t too far away from resale. And if you look at the cost over the price of the contract vs. the maintenance fees you’ll pay, which are far greater, it’s not such a bad deal, especially since you can use the points at the Riviera and other new resorts down the line. Not to mention the fact that you get the points the day you buy them. Just something to keep in mind.

I've found that if you don't have points expiring soon and/or a trip to plan, the process isn't too bad. Since I already have two trips planned for next year, the anxiety of the waiting game isn't there.

Thanks for sharing your FANTASTIC experience ! Both my contracts were re-sale back in the day. I have nothing to say that will have the word "but" in it ! Playing the waiting game does suck, but you got what you wanted and sound like more, in the end! Great Job, one of these days especially living in Cali would love to get to Aulani. One of these days...

All fair points, but I made it clear that my experience was just that…my experience, and not all will be the same.

My overarching point was to give another perspective as there is no lack of posts that bring up the potential hassles with resale.

Our SAP points are for Aulani so I think we’ll be good there.

In the end there are tradeoffs for both direct (cost) and resale, just depends what is best for each person.

You’ll have to get out to Aulani, it’s a great resort in our opinion!

I do find it a bit ironic that so many lament the time it can take for a resale contract to close, with many saying that the cost savings are not worth it.

DVC is by definition a long term savings on future vacations, with a break even counted in years.

So, a little bit of wait for a resale contract to guarantee a savings, seems quite consistent with the whole program.

Well its not really the time it takes for the offer to points to conclude, its also the time it takes searching for contracts that fit your needs as well. MUCH easier to call up DVD and buy the exact amount and uy you need vs spending lots of time looking at broker sites finding it. Then there's the specter of it getting taken in ROFR and having to start whole process over again that can cause a 2-3 month process to balloon to double that... To a lot of people, thats half the fun of it though. :)

I definitely agree with that, yet:

Just think about how much easier it is to book a room directly with Disney compared to buying a DVC contract and planning vacations up to 11 months in advance.

DVC, even buying direct, has a lot more hassles than booking directly with Disney, but we do it primarily for the savings on future vacations.

Which is similar to the additional hassles that can come from buying resale, for the benefit of saving on the cost.

The good news though, is a healthy resale market is good for everyone, even those who only buy direct.
