Had the pleasure of dining at Palio with my husband, my sister and our good friend on Friday, January 24th. The only person in our group who had eaten there before was our friend, and he highly recommended it.
We arrived around 8:30 and waited a moment or so before we were seated. The excellent service began immediately. My sister and I were treated like royalty. The maitre de held our chairs for us as we sat down. I've been to a few nicer restaurants before, so this was no surprise to me, but my sister was in awe!
Our server was wonderful! He took our drink orders and let us take our time looking through the menu. Someone came by and cleared away the plates that had adorned the place settings at each of our seats. Our drinks arrived and the waiter took our appetizer and dinner orders. Then someone else brought us a lovely basket with two kinds of fresh bread and a head of roasted garlic.
We decided to split all the appetizers and our waiter served each of us as the separate appetizers arrived at our table. The tables weren't very large, so this helped keep the pile of dishes to a minimum. We split the pizza margherita (excellent crust!), the Bruschetta Al Pomodoro (tasty), and the Gnocchi Alla Romana (very yummy!!!)
I had the Risotto con Caparozzoli and it was amazing. All the shellfish was delicious. My sister had the Fettuccine Alfredo and she enjoyed it, although it was too much food to try to eat after all the bread and the appetizers. My husband had the Tortellini Con Aragosta and I was really jealous after I tried one of the tortellini! If we dine at Palio again I am ordering that for my meal!! It was so good!
Our friend had the sea bass (I think it's the Branzino Ai Funghi) and he enjoyed it very much. Check out the menu on Deb Wills' site. It's from January '02 but I don't think it's too different from the menu we had.
Our experience at Palio was terrific. We really enjoyed the service, the atmosphere and the food. The strolling violinist stopped at our table and took requests. He was a very gentle older man and a great musician!
By the way, it was one of the coldest nights in Florida (or so it felt) and my sister and I had on jeans and sweaters. The four of us had a few beers at the Big River Grille and Brewing Works prior to dinner. We saw a mix of casually dressed people (in jeans just like us) and people dressed much nicer dining at Palio.
