Can fastpasses for Fantasmic be chosen just like any other fastpass or do you need a dinner package?

If it can be chosen on fastpass plus, would anyone reccomend it? I love the show and I want a good seat, but I don't wanna waste a fastpass if it's easy to get a seat without one.

If two shows are scheduled for the day you want to visit HS, go to the second show. You won't need to use a FP+. I was just there this week, one of the most crowded weeks of the year. At 7:45 the 8:30 show was standing room only. At 8:15 it was at capacity. The 10:00 show still had an empty section when it started! Personally, I won't use my FP+ for shows, especially if there is another way to get good seats.

We did a FP for Fantasmic last week because we didn't want to have to wait. And we have two toddlers so we didn't want to do the late show. We arrived about 5 minutes before the show was going to start. They announced it was standing room only, but since we had FP we still had seats. We were seated to the far left. We would have had to arrived really early to get better seats. The best seats seemed to be reserved for the dinner package people.

We used our 4th FastPass for Fantasmic. We arrived about half an hour before showtime and sat towards the left middle in the first row - which is where we like to sit- so it worked out perfectly for us. We were able to obtain this 4th FastPass around 4:00 when we hopped over to DHS from MK.

If you DO get a F! FP+, you can choose to sit in either the FP section (virtually the entire right half of the theater)
or the Standby section (virtually the entire left half of the theater.)
So, whatever section has the better seating at the time you arrive, you can go there.
Without a FP, you can only choose a seat in the Standby section.

There is a very good chance that you can get a FP+ for F! as a 4th or 5th FP of the day because they
issue SO MANY of them (enough to cover nearly the entire right half of the seating.)
On many nights, it is possible that you can gat a FP+ for F! as you are walking to the theater.

As to when to arrive at the theater, I'd get to there 45-60 minutes before the show-time.
Even with a FP or Dining Pkg. reservation, don't wait too late.
On busy nights, the CMs will stop holding the reserved sections within 20-30 minutes before show-time,
and turn over any available seats to waiting walk-in guests.
