It depends on what time of year you are going. If you are going at peak season and can get a reservation for the Fantasmic package it's a good idea, that way you don't have to wait as long and you can get a seat. If you are going at a slow time of year it's just not as big a deal to get the package. Plus the seatings are always so early. If you are going to try to book the package, make sure you try to call at your 180 day mark or as soon as you can. There are only a limited number of packages and they book up very fast.

As far a restaurants, Hollywood and Vine and Mama Melrose's are about the same quality and service level, both are pretty good, but I prefer 50's Primetime over both of them (I don't believe 50's Primetime Cafe is available for the Fantasmic plan). We have eaten at Brown Derby one time, but probably never again. I thought the food was good, but it was in no way worth 2 table service credits.

Hope this info helps.

Three restaurants are available for Fantasmic Package: Hollywood & Vine (we will never step foot in again--twice bad service and twice bad food); Mama Melrose (we go here each time--we've always had good food--not gourmet--but good and good service) and Brown Derby (we weren't impressed when we went five years ago and don't think it is worth two table service credits per person). As previous poster said, if you are going off season, you can probably get away without doing it; we always go during free dining in September and always get the package.

We just got back and went to Hollywood & Vine with the Fantasmic package. I know from reading this board that a lot of people don't like H & V, but we enjoyed it very much. I think the food was along the same line as every other buffet meal in Disney and we had no problem with the service at all. We then took our voucher for Fantasmic and walked right in. Loved Fantasmic. Best show there in MHO.
