BOSTON -- Safety officials are investigating a suspicious letter discovered at the post office on Congress Street near Faneuil Hall.
Fire officials said the letter was addressed to the president of the United States and had a white substance inside it.
Assistant U.S. Postal Inspector Harold Lane told the Associated Press that a woman dropped the envelope into a mail slot at the post office late Friday morning.
Crews do not yet know what substance is inside, but they are treating it as a level three alert, the highest hazardous material warning. It requires the crews to wear protective clothing and to evacuate buildings adjacent to the scene.
Two clerks who were at the post office at the time have been taken to Mass General hospital as a precaution.
NewsCenter 5 and The Boston Channel will have more information as it becomes available.
