My DDs school celebrates Book Week next week by having a "Come as you Favourite Book Character" parade. It is on Friday afternoon and we need a costume. There is a winner from each class. Last year she wanted to go as The Snowman so I made a costume. It was :thumbsup2 but it didn't win ( was I bothered!!!!) DDs teacher took me to one side after the parade and said the judges thought it was shop bought so didnt win but should have.

She wants me to make a costume again this year but not sure what - she has no ideas. It has to be a character from a book and be easy to make. Harry Potter,Cat in the Hat and all the Disney characters have been done.

Any suggestions?

How about one of the Wizard of Oz characters. I made DD a Dorothy costume for one of hers many years ago it was really easy as I just used a checked summer dress and made her a white pinny with a big ribbon tie, for ruby slippers I just covered an old pair of her shoes in red glitter. She loved them so much she wanted to wear them to bed :rotfl: and she took a stuffed toy Toto with her in a basket :)

don`t even go do the world book day route!!! I`m having a nightmare as my dd is insistant as going as anne frank(she has a ww2 obsession ) and have spent the evening cutting out gold stars of david for her outfit and scouring charity shops for 1940`s style clothes!!
the boys are going as peter pan and jack sparrow (i know its not a book character as such !)which is nice and easy as we can get away with shop bought but dd is fed up of being the 3rd or 4th person inher class as hermione granger or snow white so wants to be unique!!

My DD would like to be something different as well!

Was The Wizard of Oz a Book before it was a film?

How about Rose from Dr Who as they have had plenty of book stories out as well as the TV series? Does she have any favourite characters from books she reads? How about a bookworm (sorry - lateral thinking slipping into play - lol)?

We are leaning towards one of the Mr Men at the moment:confused3 :confused3 :confused3

How about something like a character from Narnia? Or how about Alice in Wonderland?

Claire ;)

Mary Poppins was a book before the film!

Claire ;)

A couple of years ago we made a costume for DD Olivia the only thing we had to buy was a black and white wig, we bought some spotted material and she wore red tights and went as Cruella D Ville from 101 dalmations:rotfl2:

How old is your DD?

A couple of suggestions that may or may not be suitable, depending on your DD's age/temperament!:

The Hungry Caterpillar
Noddy / Big Ears
Paddington Bear

DD is 8. The Hungry Caterpiller is a great idea but was a winner last year.

Charlotte from Charlottes web is a possibility. She is sooooo fussy. Thanks for everyones suggestions so far.

A couple more suggestions:

Little Red Riding Hood or Rapunzel (Brothers Grimm) - not sure where you'd get the long long hair for Rapunzel!

Or maybe the Snow Queen (Hans Christian Andersen) or in the same fashion, the White Witch in the Lion Witch & The Wardrobe.

Or there's the witch from Winnie the Witch?

She likes the Charlottes Web idea - got the body for the spider sorted but what does a spiders face look like?

Oh 'Book Week', that was always a nightmare in our house. For the first couple of years my DD's went down the Hermione from Harry Potter route and then it was 'uncool' to do that - thank goodness they're too old for this now

Good Luck, and I hope she enjoys it :thumbsup2

Here's a few including soem for dressing up as boy which she might find cool

Alice in Wonderland
Heidi
Dress as a ballerina for the Nutcracker
Dress as a princess for
Princess & the Pea
Frog Prince (or could go as a frog!)
12 dancing Princesses etc etc
Pinocchio
Aladdin
Treasure island

Have fun with your sewing machine and try not to make it look too good this time! :rotfl:

What about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland or one of the playing cards.

Violet from Charlie and the chocolate factory.
