Family words

Something else we do that has just become habit is whenever someone in the car asks "Where are we going?", we always answer "Crazy!" We actually had one child's friend state "I've never heard of that place. What do they have there?" :rotfl:

We do this too, my kids finally caught on and now they say "well how long will it take to get to crazy" LOL
The usual answer is "not long, we're most of the way of there already"

When I was a kid and we weren't allowed to say the "s" word we would say "ship" my mom told us that still sounded bad so she suggested we say "boat" that way no one would know what we were saying. I still say "oh boat" when I want to say the other!!

My oldest ds couldn't say oops so he said "oots" and now we say it!!

As for the gas one we say that we have a duck following us and our duck is quacking!! :lmao: Pretty pathetic I know!!

around here-

"budgie"-the name for a blanket that has some sentimental significance (dd started calling her baby blankent budgie as soon as she could talk)-there are variations such as "stanky old budgie" (dd's now ripped and threadbare baby blanket), "rainbow budgie" (a crocheted baby blanket in rainbow colors), and "magic budgie" (a crocheted blanket dh and i received as a wedding present that for some reason the kids think holds magical powers only parents can invoke :confused3 ),

"i'm cleaning out the fridge"-means leftover nite,

the alternative to being tucked into bed is to be "tuckled" (tucked with tickles),

"ideas and surprises"-we banned the word "secret" from our home when the kids were born (saw too many kids in social services not disclose their abuse becuase abuser told them it was a "secret-and you know you never share a secret") so if we want to talk privatly with someone and share something we say "x i need to tell you an idea or a surprise".

old friend of mine had a great one "carpet treats"-these were the cheddar goldfish, cheerios and the like her toddlers would drop on the carpet and come back looking for to nosh on later in the afternoon (and get very upset mom had already cleaned up) :goodvibes

My family had several, including 'hose pipe' (a garden hose) and 'house shoes' (house slippers). I don't know where they came from, but we all say it. I used to get teased about those when I was in school -- I guess they sound odd?

My grandfather was great with sayings. Whenever one of us kids would complain that we weren't feeling well (usually because we were trying to get out of something) he would come back with "well, you get that way before you die". Sounds harsh, I know, but it was his way of telling us to stop whining. :lmao:

When my son was tiny, one of his first words was, "Beeda". We'd say it back to him and he'd laugh and laugh. Then, one day when he was about three, I turned to him and said, "Beeda". He looked me straight in the face and said, "Beeda not nice word." ("not nice word" was how we explained swear words to a toddler)

Here all along he had been swearing at us! So, whenever we feel the need for a swear word, we say, "BEEDA!"

Edie

When DS6 was a baby, he called his big sister BEEDA! Hmmmm what was he thinking? :confused3

My family is Sicilian and my great grandparents were both first generation, so a lot of our family words are Sicilian-American slang or words that they said with thick accent that came to a whole other word.

Baccosa -Bathroom...think Backhouse(out house) said in an Italian accent. This was just explained to me, all along I thought that was the real "Sicilian" word for bathroom....

Tompanotta - word for an easy girl...not sure how this one came about.

pizan - good friend, this is a real Italian word, but I probably spelled it wrong.

bouna bouna - to describe food that is really yummy

batsa - dumb

I think there is more, but I can't remember them right now!

Most of those sound familiar, Mrs.K, I hadn't heard "Bacossa" in 35 years. Let me add (spelling is phonetic):

stunahd - thick headed
spoostie - crazy
ah-shpet - "Wait a minute"
an diamo - "Hurry up"

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I'll add more as they randomly pop into my head. Ciao!

When I was growing up we weren't allowed to say fart, so the term we were taught was putz. I really haven't taught my kids that word for whatever reason. It's just plain ole toot to us. :goodvibes

Our dog loves to go for walks, and she goes crazy when she hears the word "walk". So the word we all use now is "pooching" as in "I'm going pooching when I get home."

Let's see, we call the Acme food market the Smack - Me
Shopping Bag market is Ho Bag (their fault...they should learn to replace light bulbs in signs!!)
The passing gas thing..why they're Barking Wood Spiders!!
I'm sure we have more ..I just can't think of any right now.
Kimba

My husband and I call cuddling up "snoogling."

We also will exclaim, "Tootie McFartleson!" when one of us lets one rip! (maybe TMI :rotfl2: ).

When I was growing up my mom called underwear "biggies" as in they're what the big kids wear instead of diapers.

Tootie McFartleson! Now that one had me laughing out loud for real!

Mushgub is a term of endearment for 4 generations. We also go marketing for food.

We say ACME acame

That's a Fend For Yourself Night here.

It's "whatever night" in our house, as in, whatever you can find.

When one of the kids is upset or needs special attention, they ask for a "cuddle-snuggle", which is something my oldest dd came up with when she was a toddler.

She also named Lunchables "little small snacks", and I still think it's cute when one of the kids asks for a little small snack in their lunch box.

Dd2 calls her blanket "Dora", which has caused some concern if we are out in public and people hear us talking about it. "Where's Dora?" "Under the stroller". "Dora stinks, we need to toss her in the washer when we get home."

Then we have the word "bop-n-go", which is the first "word" dd2 ever said. She would babble away, then very seriously say "bop-n-go". We never did figure out what she meant by it, but it's the word we use when we can't think of the right word to use.

when I was really young my Uncle started me saying the work "Put-chi Put-Chi" it is when soemthing is really good . Also we called Sandwichs a Samich .

"Wow this Smaich from the Deli is Putchi putchi " stiupid I knwo but he is 47 and I am 38 and we still call eachother to to tell the other of something putchi putchi : )

We have started taking airborne when we go on trips...the child's version is grape flavored and my son decided he was drinking purple flurb (from Jimmy Neutron). So now we all say we are taking our flurp.

I told my hubby this one last night, and while I was saying it, he burped really loud, and then said, "Hey, I'm Burpy McBelchson!"

I think a new tradition has been born. :rotfl2:

"Tooshie burps" for passing gas.

"Rooskie" for someone who does something dumb
