Has anyone else been hearing about this National Geographic Family Tree Project where they trace your family roots through blood DNA? I think this is so interesting!! I would love to find out where my Dad's family came from but he is gone and they can only check for my Dad's family roots through a male in the family. I would only be able to find where my Mom's family roots came from with my DNA!

I love working on my genealogy. I have tons of information; although, I wonder if it's accurate. You never know who had affairs, etc... It would be so awesome to participate in the National Geographic project!

I am in the process of ordering the kit right now! It runs $107.50. I guess they send you instructions and swabs and you swab the inside of your mouth and send it back to them and they analyze it and get the info back to you.

I got the kit in the mail today! I thought they used blood DNA but it is saliva DNA. I haven't read all the paperwork yet but I am looking forward to getting the results!

I wonder what kind of results you will get. Please post when you receive some kind of answer back from them, I'd like to know how much information you really get back.

Ok....I don't mind bragging about my family tree when I find out about it! The kit contains 2 swabs and 2 vials with liquid in them for the samples and collection instructions. They enclosed a padded return envelope to send them back in. There is a DNA consent form and we have been assigned a number to identify us and our results. There is a "Human Family Tree" map, a booklet telling about the project and a CD of some kind I have not had a chance to look at yet....maybe more info about the project? This will be interesting! I'll report back when we get results.

My Dad always joked about his family background and I don't know what this will provide as it is considered "a deep history", but, from what I saw on the Today Show, it looks like we all came from the same "cradle of civilization" out of Africa.....

Well, we found that we are (what DH calls) "typical white bread" Caucasians!

Our 'family line' came from "Adam" in Africa and our ancestors migrated from Africa to Europe. The testing did not give any more "recent" information.

My Dad used to tell us that we had an English background, also related to King Herod and an early American horse thief, and the family having come from Kentucky in the early 1900's.....then he would laugh! With the results we got from that test, all of those statements could, indeed, be true!

Going back to Iowa for the recent family funeral, I learned that DH's family came from Germany just a short 2 generations ago! They have always been farmers, even in Germany.

I joked with DH that we may have come from the same, common, family line from Europe and he didn't think that was funny!

I haven't, but my two aunts have traced our family history to William the Conquerer and beyond.

I think it's pretty cool. My mom was adopted at birth, so I don't know anything about her lineage.

My mother has participated in the National geographic DNA project. Her Haplogroup is J. Haplogroup J is a subgroup that came from Haplogroup R which came from N which came from L3. L3 is the group where Mitochondrial Eve came from more than 150,000 years ago in the Eastern part of Africa. Her migration pattern went straight up through Africa into middle Europe. My mother's group were among the first farmers during a period known as the Neolithic Revolution.

Mtbluejeans--how cool!! I can't wait to see how the study evolves as time goes on. Did you answer the follow up questions about your family and their history and language spoken? Mom did, she figured it would only enhance the study. I love genealogy!!

Yes, I did the follow up questions for that same reason....I thought we should do the whole experience! I thought there used to be a map on the site with alot of the participants' numbers on it showing their 'path of evolution' but I couldn't find it yesterday. Am I mistaken?
