While the combination sounds very strange, it is a delicious combination of salty sweet and has always been a hit everywhere I've brought it. While it takes quite a while to make due to having to wait for things to cool/gel, it's super easy:
Strawberry Pretzel Salad
3C crushed pretzels
4 1/2T white sugar
2 sticks butter, melted
1C white sugar
2 (8oz) pkgs. cream cheese
1 (8oz) container Cool Whip, thawed
1 (6oz) package strawberry Jello
2C boiling water
1 (16oz) pkg. frozen strawberries
Directions:
1. Take out cream cheese, Cool Whip, and frozen strawberries to thaw. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Mix together the pretzels, 4 1/2T sugar and melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or lightly toasted. Set aside to cool completely. (To speed up the process, I throw mine in the fridge or freezer for a bit.)
3. In a medium bowl, beat the sugar and cream cheese until smooth. Beat in the Cool Whip. Spread evenly over the cooled crust (make sure there are no gaps where the Jello mixture that will go on top can seep down to the pretzel crust--this would make it soggy). Refrigerate until set, about 30 minutes.
4. In a medium bowl, stir together the Jello and boiling water. Mix in frozen strawberries, and stir until thawed. Pour over cream cheese mixture in pan. Refrigerate until completely chilled, at least 1 hour.
These are about the easiest things to make and they are to-die-for:
Seven-Layer Bars
1 stick melted butter
1/2t vanilla
1C graham cracker crumbs
1C butterscotch chips
1C flaked coconut
1C mini marshmallows
1C milk chocoate chips (we use the milk/white chocolate swirls--yummy!)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1C chopped nuts (optional)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x13 well.
2. Mix butter & vanilla in a bowl, add graham cracker crumbs, press into pan.
3. Add in layers, the butterscotch chips, coconut, marshmallows, & chocolate chips. Top with the condensed milk and nuts. (I never use the nuts but, they're an option).
4. Bake for 30 minutes, cool, & cut into squares to serve.
