Family of 6, what is the least......?

Personally I wouldn't plan to just jump in an start "extreme couponing" if you aren't a couponer to begin with. It takes time to gather your coupons, unless you purchase them online. I coupon and the savings vary week by week. Our stores do not double coupons, so there are no extra savings there, and my average savings each week with coupons is about $15.

When I go grocery shopping I plan my trip around my coupons, using coupons for the items that I usually buy. I then couple them with any in store sales or in store coupons. I would take a look at the items that you currently purchase and start looking for coupons for those items. This should give you an idea of what savings using coupon scan give you.

I'll echo the "a lot depends on the area you live in" comment. In my area, no one doubles, so the really low amount coupons are generally not worth the effort (save .15 on a can of tuna...gee what a deal! ). But, most stores DO take internet coupons around here (where as other regions internet coupons are not widely accepted). So if you keep an eye on the sales ads and the websites that offer the printable coupons, you can score some deals.

It also depends on what you eat. DH and I don't eat cereal, so even if I could get it for free, it wouldn't matter (unless I wanted it to put in a food drive...which I've done). A lot of things there are coupons for, we don't eat. So I don't bother with coupons and instead cook many things from scratch, which can be cheaper than buying store bought (and often healthier).

This is spot on advice. My area doesn't double anything so that is out the window for me. However, I will say those 40 cent off 4 coupons that another poster brought up have helped me *some* I don't use a ton of them but I do use Campbell's Cream of (fill in the blank) for cooking and so when I stock up on them I wait until I have coupons. Hey 10 cents off a can is better than nothing right? Also Progresso has been having $1/4 which makes my 4th can 28 cents. DH has been big on taking soup when he works (because he's gone from a full kitchen suite to a room with a burner, microwave, and small sink - he travels, BTW, this isn't at home ;)) and so every little bit helps with that.

I never buy what I *wouldn't* buy without a coupon but I will swap between brands for a coupon. For instance, I will use either ALL or TIDE as long as it is Free&Clear. So I buy whichever I have a coupon for. I never use Cheer as it breaks DH out in hives, F&C even, so I just stock up when I have a good coupon and/or a good sale on what I do use.

One answer to the bolded: Coupon train! That has really helped me ramp up my savings with coupons :) It's also nice that I get coupons from other areas of the country that might have things I don't, hopefully what I pass on goes to someone who didn't have that one in their area or mine saves them more.
