Family of 5; First Time DDP - At WDW Now!!! 4/1/09 to 4/10/09

Alright, Ohana here it comes:laughing:. We had just finished up with our Dole Whip snacks and we had about 50 minutes to get to Ohana for our ADR. It was very crowded at MK, so we decided to head over early. Well we are glad we did as it took all 50 minutes to get out of the park, wait for the boat, and to get over to the Polynesian. Once there, we enjoyed the theming of the resort. The high humidity added to make it more Polynesian feeling - very much like Hawaii in the summer time, but with no ocean breezes.

We made our way upstairs to check in, were handed a pager and waited about 10 minutes to be seated. This was our longest wait so far; not bad at all. The greeter walked us to our table, and explained that this was a restaurant that served everything family style (so for us this would be just like eating at home, except we didn't have to cook:woohoo:) and it was all you care to eat. Our server was very friendly and so was the entire staff. On a side note - we often notice when we come to WDW that the cast members, in any capacity, are always a bit more friendly than they are at Disneyland where we visit many times a year. Don't know if it is southern hospitality or what, but it is a noticeable difference between both coasts. I know this was :offtopic: but I just had to mention it.

Back to the food...As usual, we started digging in before I thought to snap some pics, but here is one of the salad after we dug in already. Nicely done with a wonderful lemon dressing. Refreshing and a good way to start:
P1000407.JPG

Then came the appetizers - yes plural, as in 2 of them. The chicken wings were heavily sauced and were tasty:
P1000409.JPG

And the second dish was the pot stickers, with a drizzle of sweet and sour sauce over them. I have eaten lots of pot stickers in my day, and these were just ok. The big downer for me was that the ends, where they pinch them closed, were very hard. Usually they get that way if they have been sitting out. It didn't ruin them as the family ripped through them, and it was only 1 of 2 items we got seconds on - but they weren't a great representation of pot stickers:
P1000411.JPG

On to the main course. Essentially, Ohana is a meat fest:yay: and they served us Beef, Turkey, Pork Chop, and Shrimp, all on huge skewers. They also served some dipping sauces. From the top left going clockwise, we have a spicy mustard sauce, then a peanut sauce, followed by a sweet and sour sauce. Served in Hidden Mickey style:
P1000408.JPG

We also were served 2 sides, one of veggies which was 90% broccoli, and noodles, which were oddly sweet tasting. Not in a bad way, but just different than most Asian style noodles. This is the other dish we got seconds of, as there was not much in the first serving to go around. Plus, DD7 is a carb-o-holic, and had to get her fix:
P1000412.JPG

So where is the meat pictures you ask...well here you go. Here is one of my DW getting ready to knock out the whole rack of pork:
P1000414.JPG

And here she is again demanding the whole skewer of beef:
P1000415.JPG

And one more of her taking the entire restaurants serving of shrimp:
P1000416.JPG

Sorry - there has been a slight delay in writing this review. DW just thumped me :headache: for my comments above, so I officially take back anything I said about DW eating anything. I think she just ate a bite of salad;).

Now that we are all friends again around here:grouphug:I can get back to the review. Actually, all of the pictures with DW were stagged, as I was too busy eating to take pictures. So, when they came back and asked us if we wanted seconds, I had them pose with DW so you all could get a shot of what they had to offer.

The meats were all good. The beef was not the best cut in the world, but was cooked tender and was excellent with the spicy mustard sauce (not too spicy). The turkey was a bit dry, as turkey breast can get that way sometime - but the seasoning on it was fantastic!!. The pork was tender and the shrimp was good too. On the shrimp side of things, it had a nice tasty sauce on the outside of it. Problem was, it was peel and eat shrimp, so you peeled all the sauce away. DW suggests that they should marinate the shrimp in this tasty sauce and the shrimp will pick up more flavor even after peeling.

Now, onto the best part of the meal - the Banana Fosters Bread Pudding with Ice Cream. Here is my evil scientist looking DD getting ready to attack it:
P1000421.JPG

This is the best dessert so far. I love bread pudding, and the banana fosters sauce was awesome!!! Warm and gooey, with a cooling of ice cream on top. I love you bread pudding:hug:!!

Here is one final one of the boys, with my DS9 trying to pose like a tiki:

Now for the math:teacher: - If we paid OOP, Ohana would have cost us $122.43 - but we had to sacrifice 3 adult TS credits and 2 kid TS credits. Well worth it.

So for the day, for lunch dinner and snacks, OOP would have ran us $197.37. We spent $141.95 on the dining plan - we are still in the black!!:yay:

You only was charged CS for the kids instead of TS? Enjoying your report

Onto day 3, Saturday April 4th. The weather was much nicer with almost no humidity at all. This weather reminds me of home, and is what I expected this time of year. Mid-80's, no humidity, perfect!

We headed over to Hollywood Studios today. For lunch, we ended up eating at Studio Catering Company, which is just outside from the Studio Backlot Tour. DS9 dug into a chicken leg, grapes, carrots and a lemonade:
P1000429.JPG

DS18 went with a chili dog, apple slices and a sprite:
P1000430.JPG

My lovely DW and I both had the chicken cesar wrap:
P1000432.JPG

These wraps were good, not too much mayo. However, the tortilla is kinda plain - it would have been better with a flavored tortilla. Also, they use an extra large tortilla so I ripped off a lot of the extra tortilla used in folding it all up, this way I had room for dessert.

DD had more carbs, mac and cheese with grapes and carrots:
P1000431.JPG

Finally, we have our desserts. 2 marble cheesecakes (mabled with chocolate and vanilla) and a chocolate cake, served hidden mickey style:
P1000433.JPG

What I liked about these desserts was the size - meaning they weren't huge. On the DDP, you get dessert at lunch and dinner, so this is a good portion size to share at lunch between the 5 of us.

Now for the bill...If we paid OOP, it would have cost $51.11. On the DDP, we used 5 CS credits.

On to the snacks at the Boardwalk Bakery.

Snack Time!!!:)

We never seem to last a full day at Hollywood Studios. So, we headed out a bit early so I could take a nap. My DS9 and I are suffering from some bad sinus issues, and I took some medicine and needed some rest before dinner. So, we headed back to our resort at the Boardwalk and stopped into the bakery for a snack. I mentioned earlier that when we went here for lunch, they let us have any dessert item in the case. However, for snack credits, they only let you have a few items - some of which don't make much sense.

Irregardless, we went with 4 items, 2 fruit tarts - which DW and DS18 both said were good and just the right size for a snack. DS8 got the flan, he said it was ok, not real good. I got the Mickey Cake - I know, I am just a kid a heart;) Yellow cake inside, fudge on the outside, not really a creamy frosting. Here is the pic:
036.jpg

I forgot to mention that right before we left Hollywood Studios, DD7 got an ice cream sundae. I didn't get a pic of it as I was riding Rock N Roll Roller coaster with the boys, so here is a pic of here after eating dessert at lunch that day - we now need to do some laundry:laundy:
P1000434.JPG

So if we paid OOP, the snacks would have run us $20.93. On the DDP we used 5 snack credits.

Up next, dinner at Marrakesh.

Awesome review. I am one of those people on the fence trying to decide on the dining plan. (figured to go in Sept when its free-- so that took the worry out for me.)
SO here I sit--looking at photos. Thanks.

Nice catch - my mistake, I will go back and edit it to fix it.

Thanks!:thumbsup2
You had me doing a happy dance:banana::banana:. I thought the dinning plan changed some....:cool1:

We still visiting ohana for breakfast and dinner. Enjoying your reports keep them coming!!!!

Those pictures of your wife at 'Ohana and the comments that followed had me :rotfl::rotfl: great reviews and pics keep them coming!
BTW was that a sauce change at 'Ohana because I thought there used to be a chimichurri green saucw??

MMM Ohana's.... you just made my day!!!
You have a beautiful wife and family!! Thanks so much for sharing with us all of us!!

OMG love Ohana!!

Those desserts look really good from the Boardwalk Bakery. I can't wait to go there!

Dinner at Marrakesh. This one is going to be tough on the math part, as we sort of diverted from the DDP a bit. I will explain more in a minute.

Marrakesh is one I was not sure about, as I have not had much experience with Moroccan food. However, I am always up for new things, so we wanted to give it a shot.
Here is a few pics of the outside of the restaurant. I always loved the theming of Morocco as it seemed to have some nice nooks and crannies to discover and it does make you feel like you are somewhere else:
P1000438.JPG

P1000437.JPG

Here is one of the whole crew, including me in the back:
P1000459.JPG

And one with the family without me, but of the sign:
P1000458.JPG

We checked in and were greeted and asked to sit down until we were called. I literally sat down, and then my name was called - about 5 seconds of sitting. The restaurant is one big room, with a 2 person band in the middle and a belly dancer. Here is a pic of the room from our seats:
P1000442.JPG

And one of the dancer:
P1000453.JPG

Now onto the food. I had read that on the DDP, you could not order the Feast or the Sampler Platters. What we could order was just the regular entrée, drink and dessert. Our server was very friendly and said that if we wanted, we could order the Feast or one of the Samplers for an additional charge of $5.95 per person. Well DS18 and I had to go with the Feast. Here is a menu shot of the Feast and the Sampler Platters:
P1000443.JPG

P1000444.JPG

As you can see, the Feast is priced higher than the Sampler Platers, so the Feast up charge seemed to be a decent deal by paying the additional $5.95. If it was just the Samplers, I would have ordered off the regular entrée menu instead of paying the up charge.

The kids couldn't make up their minds about what to drink, so our server said he was going to bring them a Moroccan drink, which was not included in the DDP, but he would throw it in (the first 2 drinks on the menu here). Here is a pic of the kids menu:
P1000451.JPG

The Feast started with Harira Soup - this was excellent. Warm, hearty and the lamb was a very nice touch. Everyone at the table also got warm bread. On the side of the soup was the Beef Brewat Roll. Like a meat egg roll (sort of) but with a sweet sprinkle on the outside. Nice blend of sweet and savory:
P1000445.JPG

DD7 and DS9 both got pasta and meatballs. However, DS9 is adventurous, so I shared my Feast with him. They liked the pasta, but DS loved the Feast food better:
P1000447.JPG

P1000448.JPG

Onto the main course of the feast. Lamb, chicken and cous cous with veggies. The lamb was excellent:thumbsup2and fell off the bone. The chicken was tender also. This was well worth the up charge:
P1000449.JPG

DW ordered off the regular menu. Here is the description from Allears.net dining menus - Couscous M'Rouzia Fass: braised beef served with caramelized onions, raisins, honey, almonds, and eggs $27.95. Again, this was a great combo of sweet and savory. Here is the pic:
P1000450.JPG

Large portions all the way around, and DW could only eat about half, and that included giving tastes to both DS's and to me.

Dessert was baklava for the whole table - three pieces each:
P1000452.JPG

I have had baklava where it is overly drenched in honey - but this was just right.

So here is the math:teacher: OOP would have been $196.23 which included everything plus DW had a glass of wine. The cost to us was 3 adult TS credits, and 2 kid TS credits, plus $11.90 for 2 feast upgrades and $10.95 for a glass of wine, plus tax - so figure $24.34 on top of our TS credits.

So for the day, if we paid OOP, it would have cost us $268.27. On the DDP, it cost us the $141.95 for the day, plus the extra $24.34 at Marrakesh, for a total of $166.29.

Still in the black by a long shot, and today was over $100:yay::woohoo:

If you are concerned about the food at this restaurant, don't be. Everything was great, and the flavors were mild. The thing I am starting to catch onto here at WDW is that even though there are a lot of ethnic food choices, nothing is really exotic by any means - and probably a bit Americanized (is that really a word:confused3) for our pallets.

Well that gets me all caught up - off to the pool. Not sure where lunch will be, and dinner will be across the lake at Cape May for a Clam Bake.

Those pictures of your wife at 'Ohana and the comments that followed had me :rotfl::rotfl: great reviews and pics keep them coming!
BTW was that a sauce change at 'Ohana because I thought there used to be a chimichurri green saucw??

Yes it must be a change - no green sauce in sight.

Loving your reports!! I agree with the others - gorgeous family!! I would like to try Marrakesh someday.

Count me in for the party! popcorn::

You have a lovely family and I love the photos. It's nice to see who is doing all the eating and reviewing. I will say we have eaten at Marakesh twice and enjoyed it both times. Glad you did too!

Looking forward to more of your reviews.
