I just got off the phone with my father and I am livid- scratch that. There is no word in the English language to describe how angry I am.

We live at the corner of an internsection. The house across the street and from us on the other corner has two german shepherds with a history of aggression toward people. My father jogs 5 laps (5 miles) around the neighborhood everyday, to do that he must go by their house. They have cornered him before and when he talked to them about it they said it was his fault, that by running he was provoking them and he shouldn't pass by their house anymore (he doesn't pass by the front but by the side yard.) Another neighbor of our's had to call 911 when the dogs cornered a woman and wouldn't let her go. The people keep them inside a fence when they are away, but let them out in the yard without leashes when they are there with them and insist that they have control with them- obviously they do not.

Today I found out that our family dachshund Schnitzel was attacked by at leat one of them this weekend. I do not have the full details, but I will say this: He is always on a leash unless he is in our backyard which is fenced, and even then he is not allowed out without any kind of supervision. He is never allowed to roam free. I got this dog when I was in 6th grade, I held him when he was the size of my palm. I pretty much raised this dog, and I am very upset. He is coming up on 12 years old and has some arthritis issues. I don't get to see him much since I no longer live at home, but he is still very special to me, and I am terrified that something bad will happen during surgery.

I want these dogs dealt with. The owners have apparently not said a word to my family, they have not offered to pay the vet bill. Like me, my father is non-confrontational so he honestly doesn't know what he is going to do. At the very least they need to be made to pay the bill since I can guarantee you that it happened either on the street or in our yard as Schnitzel is not allowed out without a leash. Our neighborhood is outside of city limits- so no leash law, but these dogs have shown a history of aggression toward people. I'm assuming the 911 call was documented, so I really want to see some kind of action take. I know this sounds harsh- but at this point I want these dogs euthanized. They have been aggressive toward people, have now injured our family dog. What if it's a kid next time? I realize these are family pets, but clearly there is no responsibility on the part of the owners.

I keep control of my dogs. Neither our dachshund nor my two dogs are ever allowed outside without a leash, putting them in our full control. I expect the same of other dog owners.

This photo was taken this past Christmas. Schnitzel is the brown dachshund.

First get a police report. Then contact the owners about paying the vet's bill. If they refuse, at the very least you should be able to take them to small claims court.

See if your state has a leash law. Our whole state has one that covers the unincorporated areas of the state.

Call the police and file a police report with them. Document EVERYTHING!

If it comes down to a life of a loved one or a family pet, it's time to become confrontational.

Contact the police and/or animal control officer and find out how to proceed as far as filing an official complaint or report.

Contact your attornmey to find out what to do as far as making them pay the vet bills.

Hunker down and get ready for the fight of your life.

Document, document, document. Get pictures of your dog's injuries, get other neighbors to write attestations that the dogs are aggressive.

Since you don't have details, was there a witness? If not you won't be able to prove anything. Sorry.

when i read these threads i always wonder why people wait to get attacked before they do something about these dangerous dogs? my neighbors had a similar instance, that the neighbors pitbull attacked their dog, but in trying to be 'nice' they didn't file a police or animal control report. but the 2nd time, they did.. by then it was too late to save their dog from a viscious attack.

make a police report and animal control report NOW, don't wait until those dangerous dog kills another animal, or worse, a child.

but I am sending a big cyberhug to you and your pup:hug:. I hope he recovers from his injuries and that you do not commit homicide over this. In Germany, after the first offense the dogs would have been seized and destroyed. My former American neighbor had two evil Jack Russells, one got into my yard and attacked my handicapable cat "Sassy", who was sunning herself, tied up on a leash. DH took pictures of that dog foaming at the mouth and covered in my cats blood. I called the police they came, saw the pictures and the dog tied up in my yard and immediately seized it and took it away. Neighbor was not home and left the dogs in her yard, despite the fact that they were diggers and had showed up in my yard more than once. She ended up paying the vet bill for Sassy, a large fine and paid the cost of destroying her dogs. I never felt bad about this as I had asked her more than once to keep those dogs controled. Her excuse they are country dogs and not used to being confined in a yard. Well, hello, you should have thought about that before you rented a house in an aggregate area. The other one was destroyed because it had killed her petsitters bunny when it was staying with them. Dangerous dogs are not welcome here and not tolerated regardless of the nationality of the owner. She never spoke to me again, and returned to the states shortly there after. IF there is a legal process that can be followed I suggest you do so for the sake of your beloved pet.

You will win in small claims, even if there isn't a leash law, they own the dogs and have to be in control of them.

I hope Schnitzel is okay.

What an idiot. Anyone who keeps a jack in the same house as a bunny has some serious mental issues. Jacks were bred to hunt small game. I think it's awful that the poor things were killed for doing what man bred them to do.

I'm not 100% sure I'm okay with them being destroyed for the cat. To a Jack, the cat is small game also. In this case they should have been seized and given to a proper home where they would have been kept inside and not allowed near pet rabbits.

It really depends on the location over here. Most laws regarding pets are local rather than state (and i don't think there are any Federal laws at all). From what I understand, unless the first attack is extremely visious, a dog usually gets a second chance before being seized and destroyed. In this case it's hard to say, since the previous problems were the dog cornering their victims and not actually biting them. Even if the dogs are not destroyed this time, the OP's family can still sue for damages, and will almost certainly win.

They were destroyed because a court deemed them dangerous. Well, as for the bunny, it was her coworkers daughter and they never did figure out he he got it as it was caged. The owner should never have asked them to watch her dogs if that is a breed trait. I did not make the decision to sieze the dogs the German Police did. They have established criteria and procedures to follow, my vet was also required file a report due to the serious of the incident and injuries. I personally was glad that they no longer lived next door as the owner obviously could not be bothered to control her dogs, and there were other pets in the neighborhood and lots of kids.

Do I understand you correctly? Are you being LESS than completely sympathetic to a person whose cat was attacked in its own private yard by a dog that dug its way into that yard? :headache: :scared: To my way of thinking, a cat is every bit as important as a dog. And a cat that is minding its own business is worth much more than a dog that goes out of its way to attack (some would say "hunt") that cat. The "proper" home for such a dog is indeed, the pet cemetery.

Oh, and to the OP......The dog that attacked your poor little dog would be history, one way or the other. I would just not put up with that crap.

I haven't lived at home in 8 years and these people have been there for less than a year and a half, so I only know what my parents have told me. In the case of the woman who was cornered, 911 was called. I don't know what happened beyond that.

We had a similar problem with a dog a few years ago that was a wolf/husky hybrid. Even though they had a fence they never put her in it- even when they weren't home. She attacked several dogs in their own yards, attacked Schnitzel and I when we were walking (no harm done that time), and even killed a dog. The Sheriff was called multiple times, the owners of the injured animals would come by with the vet bills, but nothing was done at all. We think that family may have had an "in" at the Sheriff's Department. This behavior continued until she got too old to leave her yard.

I did get an update: He came through the surgery swimmingly and will be kept overnight for observation. I was planning on going home this weekend, and now I have to find a pet sitter for my two dogs as it would be unwise to have two rambunctious puppies running around while he is recovering. Thankfully, I have several friends who will do it for no charge, but if one of them is not available they should have to pay to have my dogs boarded as well, since I would not incur that expense if this had not happened.

Once my parents get off work, I am going to get the full story from them.

And you would be incorrect regarding the cat. The dog came into HER yard and attacked HER cat. My Anni was a terrier mix of Jack Russell and some other terrier and Ruby is a Jack Russell terrier. Not once has Ruby ever attacked our cat. Not when she was first introduced into the fold did she make a move towards the cat. The only ones that ever made a move to attack a cat was the dachshunds. The neighbors cat came into our backyard and onto our porch. We did not know she was there until we let the dogs out. Anni ran right past and the dachshunds cornered her. Thankfully we were able to rescue the cat and it wasn't harmed. These were dogs that needed to be put down! These were not dogs that were doing what they were bred to do. Terriers are considered go to ground dogs. There are actually earthdog trials for them. Basically the dog goes to ground to hunt the alleged prey in their dens and they are also required to follow a series of tunnels.

To the OP please keep us posted on your poor Schnitzel. He looks a little bit like my silly Simon.

I would not hold your breath waiting for any reimbursement for you needing to pay for boarding of your pets that live however far away.

WOW must have been the weekend for dog attacks. See my post about our dog being attacked by the neighbor's dog. I know our police department won't do anything UNLESS there is a documented attack.

Glad to hear your dog is doing better.

and I would like to thank the posters who felt that my handicapped cat "Sassy's" life had some value. She lived thru this incident and died 30 Nov 2007. We morn her loss everyday and miss her terribly.

this is why it is important to file a report for every instance with an aggressive animal. same thing happened to my neighbors, because they didn't report the 1st attack, animal control didn't want to get involved with the 2nd attack. they did however, tell the pitbull owners that they would have to erect a fence and muzzle the dog at all times. they didn't want to pay for the fence, so they surrendered the dog to be euthanized:sad2:

Hey, last year we went to a dog agility class with a Schnitzel. Could that be one and the same? Hope he does all right.

Just talked to my dad-here is the "full story"

My father was walking Schnitzel on the leash. Their dog E was out in their backyard with no leash so she could play with the kids. My father and Schnitzel were walking by and she came up and they sniffed eachother. Without warning, she seized him by the chest. My father was trying to pry her off of him, kicking, etc. and she would not budge. It took several adults from their family, and even they had a heck of a time getting her off of him.

My father admits that he exchanged a few "choice words" as he was taking Schnitzel inside. The dog got away from them a second time and tried to attack him again. He finally had to pick Schnitzel up while the 20 something year old son was yelling "Get your ****ing dog out of here!" He said he did blow his top during the attempt at a second attack. Apparently the dogs that cornered the woman and my father last year they had to get rid of, and the lady blamed my father for that. FTR, he never called anybody after they cornered him. We suspect it may have been another neighbor or the 911 call that did it.

The damage was much worse than we could tell. It just looked like puncture marks, but apparently the muscles in his chest and his entire rib cage were torn. The vet said that if we had not brought him in today he would have died. My parents did try to call their after hours last night and they did not answer, apparently they never received the page. They apologized profusely for it. He is on some serious pain meds and it will take about 3 weeks- a month to fully heal.

The bill will most likely be pretty high because of the damage. My father is on the fence about pursuing it though because he doesn't want to escalate it- he has had dealings with the woman before and apparently she blames us for having to get rid of her other german shepherds even though we never filed a complaint or called any kind of authority. We are well known at the vet's office, two of our cats were adopted from them. My mom is even in a book club with the "head vet" so we will be getting her opinion tomorrow.

What irritates me most is that these people have a history of not controlling their dogs, apparently had to get rid of a couple, but still do not control them. They have a dog run, the solution is so stupidly simple: Keep your dog in the dog run or on a leash! I'm hoping that she will do the right thing and come by. We are going to give them a few days to see if they come over and offer to pay once emotions have cooled down.
