Fairytale Pkg Perks-When Do We Get Ours?!?

Technically it's not. DVC is still in the growth stage. Cash cows have reached maturity, where there is very little growth. Yet they throw off a tremendous amount of cash because costs are low. The key is, what stage of its life cycle is the product or service in.

That said, here's why DVC works for Disney Corp. Disney can earn revenue from loyal Disney vacationers $2,000 at a time over the next 40 years, or it can have that money, discounted to its present value, all at once. Through DVC, it gets the money all at once. This works for them in a couple of different ways.

First, they can show higher quarterly revenues in at least one division of the company. This pleases all the short-term, myopic Wall-Streeters who can't see beyond three months. Stock value goes up (somewhat debatable lately, but in a perfect world, that's how it would work). Second, Disney Corp. has a lump sum to invest in many different ways. Whatever method it chooses is irrelevant for this explanation; suffice it to say, that Disney finds that its return on that investment is much greater than getting 40 years of vacations, $2,000 at a time. That's even if you factor in a 5% annual price increase.

When you add in financing at 10.5%, it gets even better for them. Now one division has an immediate lump sum another has a stream of finance revenue over the next 10 years.

Now fast forward 40 years. Disney has several resort properties on which the mortgages have been satisfied. Maintenance has been covered by members for the last 40 years. So have taxes. Besides construction, sales & marketing are the only real expenses. Disney has fattened their balance sheet, and we've paid for most of it. They've had a "captive audience" for that time, too. Why wouldn't they want to do this?

But, considering our DVC accomodations are MUCH cheaper than even the "Super Duper Discount rates" even on the packages and assuming our in-park spending is approximately equal on a per day basis to that of other guests (except perhaps local residents), then what is there to complain about? With the DC on it's way out, no-one will be getting "special perks", except CMs and FL residents, and maybe corporate sponsors that pay big bucks, (unless you consider the 1% for Visa holder a "perk"). What do they "owe us", nothing that isn't available to the general public. If everyone is so terribly upset with what DVC offers as compared to the Hotel Package Deals, you DO have the option of selling your membership (often for a decent profit) and purchasing the packages for your trips, if you think it will save you $$$.

Not to say I wouldn't LOVE a discount on APs and dining locations, but I don't feel slighted if I don't get them. This "Entitlement" mentality is ridiculous. We had a choice - buy DVC or NOT. We knew what the program included when we plunked down our $$ - it was specified in our agreements. It includes the DVC RESORTS - period. Trading can be discontinued, pool hopping can be discontinued, ALL "perks" can be discontinued. If Disney were to exercise that right, should we complain - we gave them those rights when we signed on the dotted line. Hey, stockholders don't get discounts, and they have a legitimate "stake" in what goes on in the company.

I already got mine. I'm spending NYE and a few days around it in a 1 bedroom at the boardwalk for about half what it would cost me if I paid cash. That's even counting a 40% discount on the "value season" days.

I sure would love it if disney gave me a great discount on passes, but that would just be the icing on the cake... on a gooey, rich, yummy, chocolate cake that tastes great even without the icing :)

Wow...I don't think I've ever gotten so many responses before! I have enjoyed reading everyone's different perspectives. Chris1gill--Is there a specific way to contact MS (someone with authority) with suggestions? I think our family will be investing in PHP passes to stretch over 2-3 vacations, but I think if they offered us AP's at a discount, I would be investing in those every year & then purchasing water park tickets on top of that. Haven't done the math, but they'd probably still come out ahead b/c I'd be spending more time (& $$$$ ) inside the parks & purchasing tickets on a regular basis. We've had AP's before, & it was nice to feel like we could go to the park in the a.m. & then leave for the day to do other things. When we're using a "day" off a ticket, I feel the need to do the "marathon day" to make best use of it. Ah, well, it's only money, right? Hakuna-Matata :D

Because the admission to the parks is SO expensive for us (3 adult tickets, 2 children) we buy the Park Hoppers. We have 3 days left on ours from last year so I guess on our July trip (17 days) we will only spend 3 in the parks!!

That is fine for us as we enjoy the pool and plan to do a water park one day and then take advantage of the US/IOA buy 2 days get 3rd free pass...........

It would be nice to get a discount on the park passes as all DVC members are such frequent stayers but Disney mustt not view it as that! IMO..........it's their loss!! We are content at the pool!
