Failed Permit Test

My youngest DS (26 now) failed the first two times he took his test for his learner's permit. In VA, the first 10(?) questions are road signs, if you miss ONE, you fail. He's been driving 9 years and is a great driver, but that test wasn't easy for him. He's not a good test taker either so that may have had something to do with it.

Awww, it's hard to see our kids fail at something they do work hard on! My son just passed his by the skin of his teeth (4 wrong, up to 5 wrong is passing). He's usually the type that doesn't have to study for anything, and he just barely passed! Here's some pixie dust :wizard: that she will do better next time!

In VA, where I live, TONS of kids fail their permit test the first time. Very smart, good students fail. It's odd. I'm told there are a good number of questions that are worded in such a way as to trip you up. I really hate that. I was sure my DD was going to fail. Most of her friends were much better students than her and did not pass. She passed the first time. Unbelievable.

I know you feel bad for her but, at least where I live, this seems to be a pretty common occurrence.

The last time I took the test (a long time ago) they had signs on the Nebraska test and I had to really stop and think, the signs look funny on a test with no writing. Just a white, rectangle sign with mulitple choice answers or a yellow triangle. You see them everyday, but without words on them.....

I guess seeing my oldest passing w/o studying and hearing from so many how "super" easy it is, it's just frustrating. Just wondering if anyone else's kids did not pass their first time.......

I myself failed my first permit driving test. I had to wait a week to take it again, but passed the next time. Tell her it's okay and she's not the only one!

My son is beginning to study to get his drivers permit. He could get it easily if I signed him up for drivers ed, but I want him to prove that he is going to be serious about it and actually get his permit before taking drivers ed.

He is not happy about studying, but I am not dropping $400 to not have him pass the class.

We actually just had that conversation last night. And a couple hours later I saw that he had the drivers ed study book bookmarked.

I have the practice test saved in our favorites on the computer so he can take it anytime he wants.

BTW, it took me 3 tries to both get my permit AND get my license.

My DS17 passed his permit test on the third try. It was really frustrating for both of us. For him, it was more embarrassment. For me, our DMV is no picnic and known for having ridiculously long wait times. The first time he took the test, we waited for 2 hours!!

All of his friends told him how easy it was, no need to read the book, yada yada yada. Well, he learned quickly that he shouldn't listen to his friends! :rotfl:

What he found every time is that he always failed on a very obscure question. In fact, it would probably be a question that I would get wrong if I had to take the test.

Make sure she knows those obscure rules and laws....those are the ones that usually get you in the end.

My DS has had his permit for almost a year- he has been a "hesitant driver"- but we are now ready to schedule his driving test. Unfortunately, it seems to be impossible around here to get a testing appointment! Six week waits or longer! It looks like we might have to renew his permit before he is able to test for his license. Hopefully he passes that sucker on the first try!

Yes, dd#1 failed the first time.
Kudos to her though, she took the road test in my Grand Caravan, and only failed pulling out of the parking spot she parallel parked in when she ran over a cone. :(

I paid $100 for the driving school to come and get her and take her the next time, which she of course, passed with flying colors.

Oldest ds (almost 21) failed the first two times. All of his friends passed with no problem. We had him take a different online class (not as punishment but because we felt for whatever reason the first one didn't work for him)
He passed the third time.

He's actually a very good driver.

I'm also in VA. I would have failed the first time except one question I wasn't sure about (regarding parking on a one-way street) had an accompanying picture of... cars parked on a one-way street. I assumed they were parked legally, and apparently I was right. The ones I missed tended to be numbers questions, like how many feet does it take to stop from 35 MPH.

Failing really isn't a big deal, don't worry too much about it :)

DD14 passed but her cousin who is the same age did not. In Iowa, there is an app put out by the DOT that we put on the iPad. Turns out the questions on the app are taken directly from the real test. She said even the answers were in the same spots (A,B,C,D).

So any Iowa kids- download that app!

Another one from Northern VA. Both my kids passed the first time, however, I think it was the only test they studied like crazy for. A lot of their friends did not pass the first time or two and my kids were determined to pass. I was watching my son and I knew he had passed the first part when I saw a huge grin on his face as the screen directed him to the second part.

Good luck to your daughter. Tell her to take a deep breath and relax.

Reporting from CA here, DD thought she knew it all, but, she didn't. It brought her down a peg when she failed the written test the first time she took it. Then she figured maybe she'd better read the book (like it had been telling her to do).

On top of that, she failed the driving test the first time, also.

She's been driving about 8 years now, with only one blip. She parked in an apartment parking lot (visiting friends) and got towed. She called home and said "the car got towed". I asked her what she was going to do about it. She figured out how to get to the tow yard, get the cash, and got her car back.

DS failed his permit test last Saturday. He was LIVID! :furious:

I tried to warn him beforehand - I failed it too on my first try many years ago. He kept insisting that "ALL" of his friends who took the test told him it was super easy. He didn't bother to look at the book since "it's all just common sense". :lmao: His test included some uber obscure construction signs (per his venting): when upper right and lower left lights are blinking, that means what? when only the upper lights are blinking, that means what?

Ooooo, he was TICKED that he got the crazy hard questions. I gave him a hug and then suggested that maybe he look through the book before we go back and have him try again. :rolleyes1

We have the Iowa DOT app, DD14 used it. She hasn't been driving since she torqued her knee over thanksgiving and is still in PT and was tentative before that. I'm hoping she can take drivers Ed this summer and have a whole year to drive with her permit before we turn her loose. She's counting down to her 16th birthday already.

My daughter failed her driving test the first time. She stopped at a stop sign and then started to enter the intersection, and another car coasted through a stop sign, causing her to hit the brakes. The test person told her she should have taken control of the intersection :confused3

A classmate of hers bumped another car during her test and passed.:scared1:

My daughter is one of the best drivers I know - a very good defensive driver. I know a lot of kids who didn't pass the first time, some the second time.

Sounds familiar! I'm from your neck of the woods- did you go to Penndot over by BJ's? We always had to wait sooo long there! We are trying to get him a driving test appointment in Easton. I hear that one is much better.

My older son failed his test the first time. Seems his friends told him it was spook easy he didn't have to study. Wrong! DD failed twice. She did read the book but she has terrible test anxiety and lacks good study skills. The first time she went her boyfriene accompanied her. She felt totally humiliated afterward. The next time it was just me and her, which was better because she failed that one too. She passed on the third go round.

Yep. We were there a little more than 2 hrs. We got there around 9:30. I told DS that we should get there no later than 8 am so we're one of the first - in and out!

Quite honestly, I think he's still too nervous to learn how to drive. He so much as admitted that his friends pressured him into taking the permit test. He didn't study AT ALL. I think he threw it so that he could say that he tried. If he REALLY wanted it, he'd have had us back at the DOT first thing this past Saturday. Ah, well, I have a feeling that we'll even be renewing his permit at least once before he's ready to take his driving test. I'm ok with that. ;) I'd MUCH rather he be a comfortable, confident driver than me be a nervous wreck every time he's out.
