Factual List of Home Resort Pros and Cons

by rtwhite:

On my map of the resort there is only one other quiet pool listed.

Curious...where did you get a map of the resort? I thought I had all the information on SSR and would love to get a copy of this. Thanks.

I received a booklet on SSR when I received all the paperwork for our points. The map is on vellum so I don't think it would scan well. I would be happy to try but the only way I know how to send it to you would be as an attachment by email. Let me know if you want it.

One big thing that seems to often be forgotten on this board regarding buyng a SSR membership is the extra years of ownership! This a very BIGGIE, and I am amazed at how it has so often been pooh poohed off as insignificant on this board since SSR was released for purchase.
If I was a first time DVC buyer and was young enough for the extra years of DVC ownership to matter, I would jump on buying at SSR. I don't know maybe I am seeing things in the wrong perspective.
I have had my BWV membership since they opened and have added on at BWV so all my pts are at this resort that I love very much and since a longer membership is not really relevant to me considering I will be too old to care if I am even still here in 2042 and my kids will also be senior citizens by that point; and because any future additions to my DVC pts wil be in increments of 100 pts it is not enough to really give me another home booking advantage, so again I will most likely always go with any future addons at BWV for the booking advantage and because it is so much easier for me to have all my pts at one resort. SO I will probably not ever buy SSR points, BUT just because it is not for many DVC members that have owned for years and are way past our late 20's or 30's does not mean it is not a good deal for new DVC buyers. No one knows what will happen to all the other DVC resorts between 2042 and 2054 except at SSR--which is owners are guaranteed additional years of membership! You are getting on at the ground floor for the next phase of DVC and nobody knows what perks might be yours--don't forget the perks offered for the original buyers at OKW!
For a brand new DVC member or a young aged member doing a 150+ pt add on .........SSR might be very well worth you looking into and very carefully weighing all the options.
Just my thoughts.
BTW, I do not own any pts at SSR, and most probably will never buy pts at this DVC resort and I am not being compensated in any way, shape or form for this SSR plug! LOL
Just stating my opinion for whatever it is worth :)

Thanks DeeP. That little fact was pointed out to me before when I forgot to list it in my original list of resort advantages. Of course, it was the key selling point for me (or at least the one that pushed me over "the edge").

I was always sort of on the fence and I thought to myself only about 2 months ago....

Hmmmm...wouldn't it be nice if they extended it another 10 years.
wouldn't it be nice if there was a DVC resort where DI is (was).
how about a boat to DDT?
how about a nice little fireworks viewing area?
etc.

Anyway, I am so glad it happened!

:D

A big factor for me in choosing VWL:

Of the DVC resorts connected to a hotel, Wilderness Lodge has the cheapest rooms. Also, in the past when special rates were offered, the Wilderness Lodge had discounts when the others did not (or at least not as much).

This is helpful for two situations:

1. Combining cash nights with points nights.
It's easier to switch rooms within a property than across properties. You can do this more inexpensively at WL.

2. Staying with family and friends.
If you don't have enough points for them (or don't like 'em enough to use your points :) ), they can stay more inexpensively at WL and still be close-by.

Absolutely fantastic thread - Thank you so much!

I've dropped by this board a few times, the FAQs, etc., but this thread really pulled it all together for me, and I am well on my way to being able to make a decision...actually decision already made...will get dh on side after his first trip to Disney in October ;)

I hope the moderators list this thread as "Important" as suggested (or a summarized version)...it really helps for those of us who are trying to figure out DVC

P.S. all the resorts seem wonderful...I for one would love to try them all!

I shared this and FAQ threads with a friend who is trying to "sell" her husband on the idea. There's a lot of good information here. Annmarie

Great thread! :)

For instance, without this list they may miss the difference in the balconies between BWV and BCV. It's possible that would make a big difference to someone who might not notice it otherwise.

I'm a newbie here and I missed this. What *are* the difference in balconies between BWV and BCV? Size? Are they not "usable"? Maybe if someone could compare to, say, the ones at the Poly?

We're considering buying into BCV on the resale market, but would like to have as much info as possible and this is *definitely* helpful.

Grumpy, Snow White, and the little Dwarves

One Pro/Con I have not seen listed here:

Pro:
At the BCV you can get something to eat with out getting wet if it is pouring rain.

Con:
At the BWV you have to go out into the weather to eat at all the Boardwalk resturants.

This has had an impact on a few of our trips, where we were planning to head back to a theme park to eat dinner, then a downpour starts, at BWV we got wet, at BCV we could get to something to eat but stay under cover!

Good point. The internal spaces BCV offers were a factor to us.

This has been/is a great thread. Sure you may get some personal feelings for or against a resort but I realize that from the get go and take that into account. Much of the information I knew but lots I didn't.
For those that say you should go and look at them? Easier said than done when most of us have full lives at our regular home, live thousands of miles/kms away and don't have the luxury of popping over after work. I realize it is a big investment but I look at this as due diligence and the info provided by folks that have purchased, used DVC, and been through the good and the bad are the best resource for us newbies.
Thanks again for your contributions.
Cheers,
Grumbo

This is a very cool thread. DeeP wins the award for the longest run on sentence I have ever seen in my life (and I have written quite a few myself) People really noticed the good qualities of their vacation homes, not the bad about others. The only thing I can say about one of my home resorts (I own two) is that when I get back from a long hard day of relaxing vacationing, there is nothing better than pulling right up to the front door and giving a guy (or girl, just incase the radicals get offended I said guy) a couple of bucks to park my car so that I can just walk right into my hotel and be home. (never mind the six mile walk down the hallway to get back to my room)

Ain't life grand.

I think that everyone of the resorts are top notch (I have only stayed in two but visited four). There are going to be things that people will like or not like and it will be up to them to decide. I think that it is wonderful that people are loyal to their home resorts. I don't think I have seen a post that said "I wish I bought OKW, I own BWV and I liked OKW better." I am happy to report that I own both and while my wife like BWV better, I didn't here her complain once about the time we stayed in our GV at OKW. I think if you are in Disney you will have a good time no matter which DVC resort you stay in. Oh, and the next time you see a my resort is better than your resort post, just remember none of thos people are staying in the shoeboxes that Disney calls the value or moderate resorts. Everyone has a fabulous place to stay, enjoy it.

CaptainMidnight, the thread didn't come through.
I think he was saying this actual thread would help and simply resurecting it. He was not linking a different thread.
