Fact vs Fiction re DHS rumors?

Hey, all..

Over the last few weeks/months, there have been several rumors posted about the future of DHS. Carsland, no carsland; Star Wars Land, no SWLand. Backlot Tour closing, not closing; hat moving, hat going away. LCA staying/going. And so on.

My question is this: Do we have anything at all definitive about what is or isn't happening with DHS right now?

Or is the real problem that Disney just doesn't quite know what to do with the place, knowing it needs some help, but absent any hard direction the rumors just run rampant?

Just wondering. If Backlot Tour goes away, its no problem for me, as it was pared back and barely worth the wait on our last visit, and LCA is terribly dated, too, but its still going...

Thanks.

Nothing is confirmed until it's confirmed. There is heavy rumor traffic about enhancements and additions to DHS since DHS has a confirmed new area and MK is in the process of finishing New Fantasyland.

I think one or more of these rumors may become reality, but for now they are just that: Rumors.

One thing most can agree to is that Hollywood Studios is in need of a major overhall. Especially in the back of the park. The stunt car show is dated and the backstage ride to nowhere have to go.

I do feel like there was much more to it when I visited in 1991. I remember passing by a facade of the Golden Girls house, and feel like I remember a second walking tour of the Florida animation unit.

I remember these as well!

The Animation unit tour was ditched when they decided to close the Florida Animation Studio (after Brother Bear maybe?).

The house Facades were demolished to make way for the LCA theater.

IMHO... The "Backstage Tour" pretty much died after they decided to remove the "Studios" part of the park. Once all the productions were removed from the park, there was no longer anything to really see on the "Backstage Tour". I still miss the fun of seeing the giant bee w/ green-screen demo and being able to look down at the shows filming in the studios. Now we have Toy Story Mania in one of the studios, and the Walt Disney mini-museum and film in the theater used to end the backstage tour.

LCA?

You'd think there would be more than enough in the way of productions to occupy DHS. Perhaps it's just not a good fit to colocate with an amusement park.

The problem is the studios really had the feeling of being rushed and given limited resources when it opened. Because of that, Rather than being a decent theme park, or a decent studio location, it ended up being a location that was left severely lacking in both regards.

There really wasn't enough to do in the park, or space to absorb the crowds when it opened. Originally, the only guest areas were the area around Echo Lake, Hollywood blvd, the Animation Plaza, and the Great movie ride.

The Attractions consisted of Star Tours, the Indy Stunt Show, The Superstar Theater and Sounds Dangerous (or whatever was in that spot), The Great movie Ride, The Muppet stage show (where Little Mermaid is now), and the Animation and Backstage Tours. There was also the Beauty and the Beast stage show in it's original location......where Sunset Blvd now joins Hollywood Blvd

the Backstage Tour Trams Queue and Load was behind the Animation building where they sometimes hide a M&G these days. It would take you thru the production buildings that still exist as part of the tour, Catastrophy Canyon, The Residential Street and NY Streets. There was also the boneyard which contained old movie vehicles... The Blackbird from the 100 Lives of Blackjack Savage short lived TV Show (Seriously... that show was AWESOME! and I wanted that boat!), and even for awhile I remember a tank that was used in the filming of Thunder in Paradise (Hulk Hogan's old show). The trams then dropped you off into a little patch of guest area that was surrounded by off-limits backstage areas. This is the approximate area where the backstage tour now loads. At the time, it was a place to sit and relax, grab a bite to eat or do some quick shopping, before doing part 2 of the backstage tour. Part 2 consisted of the Water Talk, where you would then walk around the tank and enter the building behind the tank (instead of rounding that bend and then making a left towards the queue and loading of the trams now). The first stop would be a special effects storage area where they had various models and props used in films, and a few guests would be chosen to reenact the bee flight scene from Honey I Shrunk the Kids. You would then walk thru the soundproofed catwalks of the 3 functioning studios where you would be able to see the sets and prductions happening within the studios before watching a final film and being let out back in the animation courtyard.

Due to the crushing crowds and the need to do something to relieve the pressure, They started opening up more of the backstage areas. First, you the Commisary and that road was opened. then the shortened the Tram tour to loop around the NY Arch before dropping off the tour guests so that they could open the NY Street area to pedestrian traffic, as well as the walkways between that area and the animation courtyard, in front of the studios.

It was during this time they also started working to add the Tower of Terror and Sunset Blvd, as well as adding Muppets and the Hunchback of Notre Dame theater.

It didn't take long before any serious production at the studios park disappeared because of the hassle of filming around all the guests, so you ended up with mostly game shows and things like the Mickey Mouse Club filming in the soundstages. Then Eisner killed the Florida Animation Department.... and the soundstages eventually went dark as production pretty much left the property entirely.

Ironically, the problems people complain about with the street layout at the park is a direct consequence of it's original layout. The original "front of the House" areas designed for guests had a bit of the ole' hub and spoke with the animation courtyard right next to the Central hub in front the Great Movie Ride, and Echo lake and it's attractions next to that. The "Back of house" areas used for production had a typical studio grid layout. As more of those backstage areas became front-stage areas, The back-stage Grid layout of the buildings and roads remained leading to todays' confusing mess.

Universal, which MGM was a hurried response to, Also opened with the idea of being a working studio with theme park elements. Over the years there too the production side has declined as the park grew and focused more on the theme park side of things (such as the complete redevelopment from 'Universal Studios Florida" to the "Universal Orlando Resort"). The Original full size production soundstages however remain to this day and are still used for all sorts of productions..... as well as the occasional Halloween Horror Nights house. ;)

The park is in a serious need of a major gutting,

i hope they add more star wars, theme muppets area little more or expand on it. get rid of the motor show and replace that with somthing fun and new, why couldnt they do a kim possible show? or a phineas and furb show? somthing from tv which is action packed for kids? phineas and furb concert? they have alot of good songs from tv.

american idol needs removing... make a star wars show or a new ride for us to enjoy. a meet and greet for all year round star wars fun.

more pixar stuff, a wrek-it-ralph theme somwhere due to its popularity.

it needs a good lick of paint and a complete overhaul - i know their are the loyals who will flame me for saying gut this park but it despratly needs it.

I think you mean Lights Motors Action, but whatever, knew what you meant.

Anyhoo, it would not surprise me if these rumors we're hearing are Disney's way to floating up some test balloons to see how different ideas are received. Leak some "rumors," and see what the reaction is of the masses.

Personally, my vote goes to Star Wars Land, since there's already a Cars Land that we can all visit in California. Trouble is that with Star Tours already where it is and the most logical available space where IT is (i.e., Backlot Tour & LMA), it would be tough to have any sort of flow between the existing Star Wars attraction and a new Star Wars land without some serious construction and relocation of existing attractions. Maybe they could ditch Indy? That's certainly due for a refresh, might be easier to just go a different direction...

Interesting ideas...Wouldn't bother me a bit for them to shut down Idol. Think its too late for Kim Possible, as they did that for the "adventures" in Epcot and have already updated it with a Perry-spy (Phineas/Ferb) mission concept.

You could "kinda" keep the current designs if you changed the theme of the park away from "studio" orientation to something like "American Ages," with each area designed for a different era, eg 50's/70's/90's.

I can't fathom a rationale for keeping LMA or Backlot unless you entirely reimagine/redesign both shows from the ground up, and the latter only makes sense if they actually started producing TV/movies at DHS again, which isn't likely. That means both seem destined for the dozer.

Regardless, I suspect its merely a matter of time before we hear something in the works to take their place(s).

Lights Motors Actions isn't even 10 years old. One of the newest attractions at DHS. I don't think it's as much dated as it doesn't have much repeat value, at least to me.

Production in the studios never really took off. Florida is a right to work, no union, state. Some say Disney (also Universal) thought here would be cost savings in FL vs CA. You can fly in the star actors. FL didn't have the number of trained (union) trade workers needed. Having to fly in those workers, or try to train people without industry experience, offset whatever labor savings were anticipated. Vancouver and Toronto and not Orlando because the places where lower budget shows were filmed.

edited to add: Just because movies are filmed at DHS doesn't mean we can't have attractions like LMA which show us how movies are filmed. Want to use a magic want? I think Great Movie Ride is in the greatest need of a refresh. Most of the tram ride has already been gutted. We have the water tank per-show and catastrophe canyon.

I wish they would put as much thought and planing, and money into the parks as they do to the DVC resorts. it seems that is their central focus now. I'm sure they are two different entities, but they are building more expensive resorts for people to come and see the same old tired things.

Same old tired things? Really?

They just added a pretty big expansion to the Magic Kingdom. They're getting ready to start a pretty big expansion to the Animal Kingdom. They've been making a bunch of smaller changes to Epcot. I think its pretty obvious that DHS is next in line, likely with a big Star Wars addition/expansion/re-theme.

By all means, though, complain because they aren't tearing out every classic attraction they have and replacing it with the latest fad.

Last two big additions to WDW DVC have both been in the MK area. Fantasyland expansion boosted the interest in MK and it makes sense for DVC to sell while the interest is high.

BLT in 2009 and late 2013, VGF is expected to open.
After that, Polynesian is the only WDW MK area resort where they can take advantage of the Fantasyland Expansion money. All this may well be completed in time time for MK's 50th.

After the easy money is made from MK area, DHS may very well be the next location. I would be shocked if DHS doesn't see some major additions/rehabs in the coming decade. Likely to coincide with a major new DVC resort built between DHS and BB.

So, what's new at Epcot? Faster test track. How many empty pavilions and open space for new foreign pavilions? Russia, Spain, Israel, Matterhorn, Mt. ?Fiji Ride anyone.
We are having a discussion about DHS, and generally not much new. I love the Muppets, but not one single change in that, or Great Movie Ride since they opened. As these continue, most people don't even know who any of the movies represented are any more.
MK, yeah, new Fantasyland, okay. Nice for kids. How about the rest of the park? Pirates were updated by Capt. Jack.
AK, yeah, some new 'land' there, replacing the mythical land thing that never was. Seems to me that is a fad. Avitar Land? Pretty faddish, if you ask folks.
And hows' that Pleasure Island coming, btw?

I'm not particularly a Universal fan, but they seem to put their money on attractions, not on more hotels. And Harry Potter is now expanding.

LOL, what is it with this forum... always with Universal?

MK is almost at the end of a very large expansion.
Epcot re-did Test Track, have added/expanded/updated a bunch of the restaurants in the World Showcase
Animal Kingdom is set to do an expansion just as big as Diagon Alley.
And like I said, I'm sure DHS is next with the expansion. Are you serious that you think most people don't know the movies represented in The Great Movie Ride?

Disney is doing updates and expansions that appeal to families and people of all ages. I don't understand your comment... yeah nice for kids... who do you think the target audience for Disney is? Families... with kids.

If I had to guess, I'd say you were a 23 year old kid... if that's the case, just go to Six Flags and enjoy the roller coasters.

If absolutely nothing else, this goes to show you how far off you are. As you say, LOL.
