Facebook Group for DIS

You have to add people as friends for them to see your info.

Not true. I saw your full name (including middle initial). Along with post stating what your DIS name is.
And from here, I happen to know where you live & work.
And from your posts, when your trip is.

Want me to keep going?
BTW, not just you. I can get info on just about anyone I want on there.
Some have network city showing with their names. Google is your friend after that.

I saw all that by simply having a facebook account & not even joining the group. Just clicking on the links. Like walking around with a shirt on that states everything about you.

Ali, I just added you as a friend and will join the DIS group - thanks! I LOVE Facebook - I've reconnected with so many old school friends there!! If anyone here wants to add me as a friend, just do a search for "Ann Eckhart" (my profile pic is of my two pugs!).

You can edit your privacy settings so people who are not your friends can only view certain bits of information about you. You can set everything to Friends Only if you wish. Just make sure you know the people you're adding, rather than adding anyone who requests.

All social networking sites enable you to protect your identity with some form of privacy settings, if you sign up and don't know about these settings then you only have yourself to blame if someone abuses your public information.

And Network names are not always true representations of where you actually live. My network is currently 'London' and I live in Norfolk, which is hundreds of miles away from London - in fact it takes two hours to get there!

I can't believe I am posting about this again, but here goes... Please listen to Splash.

FYI
If you do not want personal information about you to circulate around the DIS, or the internet in general, be careful not to put that information out there. Don't be surprised when information posted on the DIS Facebook group gets back to the DIS.

Let me say this AGAIN because some people are not getting this.

I DID NOT JOIN that group.
I AM NOT anyone's friend on that group.
I do have a Facebook account however.

AS AN EXAMPLE:
I CAN see disneyfav4ever's COMPLETE NAME (first, middle initial & last name).
I CAN see that she posted that her DIS name is disneyfav4ever.
I CAN see anything she has posted on that group.
I CAN google & find her here. ( I didn't but I could.)
I CAN find here where she works & where she lives because she's posted it here. (I didn't but many others have said she's posted this info so I assume I could easily find it if I wanted to.)
I CAN see trip dates in her signatures & without even looking I'm sure she's probably posted where she's staying & eating & when.

That's just ONE person. Most other people there have their network city showing next to name for people not friends yet. Just a few actually allow everything on their profile to show including who their friends are. I doesn't take much more work to google someone's name & state to find where they live if you know where to look. (I know because I've used such sites in past jobs.)

OK, MAYBE I'm jaded from years of working in insurance & banking. You DO NOT advertise when you will be away from home to the world. You DO NOT advertise everything about your life & who your friends are. Again, perhaps this comes from banking & military husband, but harm can be brought to family & friends. DH needs to remind me of that because even I forget. Military families should understand what I'm talking about. It was also taught to us at the bank.

So, UNLESS you normally walk around 24/7 with your full name, town, state, board names, trip dates & plans, and all other life info written on your shirt for thw WORLD to see with no worries, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU POST & WHERE!

If you tell 100,000 people (DIS members) PLUS the infinite number of people who read & don't register, plus anyone SEARCHING that you will be away from home on such & such a date, odds are SOMEONE will take that info and do something with it that you hadn't intended.

Signed, me. A person who had MY photo stolen from my signature here (via photobucket) and placed in another Photobucket account with unkind label. God only knows where it was posted & what else was done with it.

I was smart enough to know better but slipped up. I can't imagine what else may have happened if I provided as much as some people have. Learned my lesson on what I say about myself and how much I provide for people to connect the dots between websites. Doesn't stop me from being myself or about my opinions, but you have to PROTECT yourself.

Good luck to all of you. Hope you don't learn the hard way.

Splash, great advice. Hope everyone who thinks "it can't happen to me" reads it and realizes it could happen to them.

If you think I'm full of it, I bet I know some people who would willingly see just home much can be pulled up on you. If so, post here or PM me & I'm sure you'll receive results that might surprise you.

I agree with you, but the problem is so few people actually use those privacy settings. I actually think is more of a problem among adults than teens (in some cases). Many teens today have grown up hearing about the dangers of the internet, and they know enough about computers to realize it's very easy to find someone. Teenagers also frequently use nick names, fake locations, etc. just for fun. On the other hand I see plenty of adults with their full names, hometowns, company, job title, kids pictures, etc. and then no privacy settings. Now that is frightening. I don't think there is anything wrong with networking sites, if you know how to use them.
