DH and I will be flying to MCO with our baby girl, who will be 17 months at the time of the trip.

We purchased a seat for her and now want to know - can we just bring our car seat? Are there FAA Approved Car Seats?

We need to buy an extra car seat anyway, so DH suggested we get an FAA Approved seat, if that is required. However, when we went to the store, we only found one box that specifically said FAA Approved. Are the other names brands okay too and just didn't have FAA on the box???

can anyone help me? :earsgirl: Thanks

Yes you must have a CSR with the sticker on the back that states it is FAA approved to use it onboard the aircraft. You must also have purchased a seat for the child, as you did. My guess is that unless the seat you are using now is very old it probably does have the sticker and you never noticed it.

It must be a seat with an integrated harness system, but for a 17month old that is what you would need for the car anyway.

Even if the ad or box dosen't mention FAA approval most seats on store shelves now are FAA approved. Just check the back of the seat on display for the sticker.

Here are a couple sites with good information on CSR's and traveling with baby. The first one has some examples of FAA approved seats.

The problem here is that you are looking for mention of "FAA" and you won't find it. The sticker does NOT specifically mention the FAA.

Here is the wording: "This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal motor vehicle safety standards”; and “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” in red lettering.

There actually must be two labels, right next to one another; each quote I've given you is normally on a separate one. The labels are normally found on the outside of the hard plastic shell, on the side of the seat. If the seat is convertible to booster use, the label with the red lettering will also say that removing the 5-pt harness voids the aircraft certification.

Once again, my Disboard friends have not failed me!

Thank you so much for your responses and wisdom!

Thanks Not Ursula - I knew you would find this thread!

I could not for the life of me remember the wording on the labels as we are past those days and I don't have a seat to check.

I do remember the frustraton and confusion when traveling especially with my oldest who just turned 10. So I try and help on these threads when I can - as I know do you.
