I think I'm going to ask for an eyelet setter for Christmas. What do you recommend? I like the silent one, but I want one that works well, too.

I don't have a silent eyelet setter, but I know a few folks here have them & speak highly of them. Where is everyone?

I have both a silent setter (by provo craft) and the good old fashioned hammer and setters. I am not fond of the silent one. (my dog is much less crazy however). It really is silent, but it's hard to twist and get the eyelets set. the hammer and eyelet setter pretty much requires 1-2 bangs but it's done. I have now taken to putting the dog outside when I need to use eyelets. :rotfl2: (although, the silent setter makes nice holes easily). I wouldn't buy one again. (it's very cute though) :rotfl2: maggie

I own the Silent Setter and I love it! I tried it out at Archiver’s and the lady told me the trick is to twist when you punch the holes but not when setting the eyelet. Simply stand (gives more leverage) over the eyelet and tool and push. It is best to have a very solid area (I used it over the leg of my table for more stability). I have used it enough now I can do it sitting down and still use enough pressure to get the eyelet to set. My friend bought it and was trying to twist when setting the eyelet and couldn’t get it to work. She hated it and was ready to take it back. I showed her my trick and now she loves it. You might try it like that and see if it works better for you. I won’t set eyelets with a hammer again!

Just my $0.02. :flower:

I like my silent setter. I scrapbook mostly after my kids go to bed, so it is nice and quiet. I didn't think it was that hard to push, I stood up and pushed down. Also it is nice to take to crops! :)

I have the Silent Setter and now I think it is great! The first couple weeks I couldn't get it to work without hurting my hand for the life of me! Lol :) You can also try it out at your LSS before purchasing it to make sure you like it. Once I got the hang of it, you would never find me with the old hammer again!

I use the Making Memories old fashioned type that you smack with a hammer - it's great therapy ...

I won't argue with you there :)

Thanks for all of the replies. I decided to ask for the silent setter.

I have the Karen Foster Clickit and hate it! Well I had it, I got rid of it a few weeks ago. It is not really silent, either. Makes loud popping noise and is next to impossible to set any eyelets on the first few tries. I have tried the MM one, regular MM eyelet setter, Moonshine designs, and the Fiskars spring type setters. For hammer type setter Moonshine Designs is awesome but expensive. i really don't use eyelets alot anymore and think they may be "phasing out" and don't really recommend that type of investment unless you are eyelet crazy. The fiskars setters are the best! Shop at home has them with a mat for $20, but I found them at a local wal-mart for $12.97. Best $13 I have ever spent. I love them. Easy to use and great for punching the holes as well.
