Eye Glasses and the Thrill Rides - How did you do?

So....I am visually deficient. :wave2: My eye glasses are NOT just a fashion statement, but I need them to fully see and enjoy life and the rides.

When I was younger, and my eyes were better, I took off my glasses and can still enjoy the ride a bit. Not sure if I can do that now. I am concerned about rides such as Space Mountain, Mission: Space and the Rock and Roll Coaster.

To those like me that wear glasses, do you have experience on those rides? If so, how did you do? Did you have to take off your glasses for them?

Share your stories! Thank you!

My glasses are more for correcting close vision so I can get by visually with taking them off on a ride. I know one thing though ... I've damaged more than one pair of glasses by putting them in my shirt or pants pocket without thinking about placement of ride restraints. So if you take them off, just be careful what you do with them. Cargo short pockets seem to be a little more suited to the common thrill ride restraint system.

I always use glasses straps (can't remember their name) that can be found at Wal Mart or any drug store. I have rode some real insane rollercoasters at Cedar Point and they stayed on. Can't say the same for my stomach though.

I've ridden everything at WDW multiple times with glasses and never had the first problem or concern. I would only worry about it if my glasses were a loose fit.

I've always worn contacts just for those rides (contacts bother me for any extended period). I know last summer I got all cocky and thought "I haven't tried Space Mountain with glasses since 1989...I bet it's better now that I'm an adult.

I was incorrect. I spent the entire ride struggling to hold my glasses on...I was afraid if I took them off I would lose them too.

This year, I'm back to contacts. Just my experience.

Rides at WDW are not very problematic for glasses. I use a sports strap anyway, but I only put it on for the risky rides (like Rock'n Roller Coaster). Most WDW rides are tame enough to not need them. Universal has more rides that are risky, but the strap works great, even if just for peace of mind.

Same as mesaboy...I've been going to theme parks in Orlando for 16 years (WDW and UO) and have worn my glasses on everything without a problem

I always make sure to stop at the eye doctor and make sure my glasses are tight enough, so never take them off. If I don't lose them on the coasters at Busch Gardens, I know I'm good in Disney.:)

I wear glasses full time and I was afraid of losing mine so I had took them off for the Rock N Roller Coaster, Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain and Space Mountain.

I had a hard glasses case that I kept in my cross body bag and they stayed safe in there. Since these glasses are only a month old, I didn't want to take any chances!

Cedar Point :thumbsup2

I live by Kings Island, go to CP A LOT, have you ridden Banshee yet? I'm still voting for Millie in the new Avatar land, Race thru Pandora!!

I wear mine on everything, have never had any problems...well, except for them getting wet on water rides and not being able to find a dry spot to wipe them off :rotfl:

I have work glasses on all rides successfully.. but often take a case and put them away for Rock N Roller Coaster and Space Mountain.

And then, last summer, my glasses came off on Tower of Terror. I had no idea that was the terror in store for me. Luckily they were not damaged even though they hit the floor along with a bunch of tickets and paper fastpasses from my lanyard pocket.

Magicbands solved all the loose items except glasses.. now I will be taking them off for this ride!

After a bad experience many years ago when my prescription sunglasses went flying on my way down a slide at Typhoon Lagoon (and I yelled a very un-Disney word), I always use a strap for all of the coasters.

When I forget to take along my eyeglasses strap (the same kind that others have referenced), I take my glasses off on RnRC and put them in my cargo shorts. I don't THINK they would come flying off but it is a gamble I am unwilling to take. Spending the rest of the trip blind would be no fun at all.

I've done lots of thrill coasters in the UK, with no problems.

I wouldn't wear them to water park, however- I have prescription goggles (that I got online pretty cheaply) and wear them if I spend any extended time in a swimming pool. It's a pain when your glasses get wet and you can't dry them off, and the goggles eliminate that problem. :)

Both my husband and I use the sports eyeglasses straps. You can get them at walmart or any eyeglass store etc. I like the kind that are longer and you can cinch tighter rather than the one length tube style. We never had any problems with them and gave me piece of mind. When we rode TT or EE, just reached behind my head and cinched it tighter and I was ready! :scared1:

The longer cinch style also have the benefit that you can easily loosen and pull your glasses off of your head to clean something that has gotten on you glasses. The tube style, you would have to remove from the glasses. :thumbsup2

Another tip for glasses...I carry a few of those disposable mosit wipes and ust them regularly because wearing your glasses on coasters and water rides gets them dirty fast! I always have a few handy.

DD wears hers at both DL and WDW on everything but Space Mountain and has have had a problem. We take them off on Space Mountain though- it is mostly dark anyway, so there isn't much to see. We would probably take them off for RNRC too (and Calfornia Screamin at DL/CA), but we can't get her to set foot on that ride. One warning about Splash, is that it is great to have glasses while you are going by all the characters, but at the end of the big drop there is a good chance you will no longer be able to see. DD always seems to get splashed in the face and then she complains she can't see until we get off the ride and get her glasses cleaned!
